Awara travel guide and discussion

Irohayu AWARA at Awara Onsen offers a delightful culinary experience with the Mikuni Fishing Port's luxurious Amaebi Bowl. During a trip to Awara Onsen, conveniently located near Awara Onsen Station, a stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, I visited this commercial facility on the first floor. The dining style here involves securing a seat first and then purchasing a meal ticket via a touch panel. I decided to make the most of my visit by choosing the Amaebi Bowl from the Mikuni seafood menu. What arrived was a lavish bowl featuring 12 neatly arranged amaebi. The translucent shrimp meat was tender and sweet, and dipping it in wasabi soy sauce enhanced its umami flavor. After savoring the shrimp meat, the correct way to proceed is to suck on the shrimp heads, enjoying the rich miso flavor to the fullest. The balance between the shrimp and rice was perfect, making it easy to finish the meal at a steady pace. This was a highly satisfying taste of Mikuni's sea bounty, conveniently available at a Shinkansen stop. We went to a hot spring inn in Awara Onsen, one of the most popular hot spring resorts in the Hokuriku region, where you can stay with your pet. This is a pet-first inn where pets are allowed in all areas of the building except for the large public bath. There are plenty of things to enjoy, including welcome treats for pets, a photo space, and indoor and outdoor dog runs. The large public bath is a hot spring, so pet owners were very satisfied with this inn. This hotel is located near the lake. It's about a 10-minute taxi ride from JR Awara Station. There's nothing around but the lake, and the hotel has a shop, but if you want something to drink or something, I recommend buying it at the station. There are two baths, and from both the large bath and the open-air bath you can slowly watch the lake as it sunset. I booked a room with a Western-style bed, but the Japanese-modern atmosphere was very nice. For breakfast and dinner, we had a course meal using local ingredients. There were many small children, so they were very considerate and made sure to welcome them. It's also recommended for families. Address: 211 Kitagata, Awara City, Fukui Prefecture, 910-4272 Atmosphere/Facilities: Quiet and unpretentious, with hot springs Recommended points: Newly renovated and clean Average price: Around 30,000 yen Budget per person: 15,000 yen Rating: Recommended for families and couples #wintertrip #hotsprings #greatview

JR Awara Onsen Station is buzzing with excitement as the Hokuriku Shinkansen line opens! While construction work is underway around the station, a CUBE stands alone in the square. As the name suggests, there are a row of cube-shaped buildings, and the one closest to the station is a cafe, while the others can be used as event spaces. A great place to buy a drink before boarding the Shirasagi or Thunderbird express trains. #trip2022 #railway #Awara Onsen

I recently visited Tojinbo, one of Fukui Prefecture's most iconic landmarks ✈️ Designated as a National Natural Monument, its massive columnar jointing cliffs battered by the fierce waves of the Sea of Japan are truly a sight to behold! I was absolutely blown away by the majestic panorama ✨ Here’s a summary of the highlights and some tips for your visit 📝 💡 Essential Tips for Exploring There are absolutely no fences or handrails on the rocks! Peering over the edge is a spine-tingling experience that will make your legs wobble 📸 The unique rock formations allow you to feel the raw power of nature and Earth’s ancient history. For those who frequently travel to Japan on their own. 【Japan · Hokuriku | The Cheap JR PASS That Makes Locals Jealous? How I Got 5x the Value 😱】 Anyone who visits Japan frequently knows that JR PASS prices have been skyrocketing lately, making those broad-coverage passes less and less worth it. If you're looking for a pass with incredible value right now, JR West’s "Hokuriku Area Pass" is the real deal. This 4-day pass doesn't just cover the Hokuriku Shinkansen through Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui; it also includes local lines (Zairaisen), several private railways, and even buses. The official price is 7,000 JPY ($45 USD / 350 HKD), available only to foreign tourists on short-term stays. I managed to snag it on Trip.com for about 6,300 JPY ($41 USD / 315 HKD) with a discount. My total train fare over 4 days came to a whopping 33,350 JPY ($215 USD / 1,700 HKD). Let’s do the math: ・Original Price 7,000 JPY → Approx. 4.8x value ・Actual Purchase 6,300 JPY → Approx. 5.3x value With this kind of insane cost-performance, you can’t help but feel that JR West is being incredibly generous to foreign travelers. Truly grateful 🙏 🚄 What can you ride? The core section of the Hokuriku Shinkansen: Tsuruga ⇄ Kurobe-Unazukionsen. Note: This pass is for Non-Reserved seats only (usually 2-3 cars per train). Key trains in this area include: ・Hakutaka|An express train that stops at more stations ・Tsurugi|A regional shuttle running primarily between Toyama and Tsuruga ・Kagayaki|All seats are reserved, so this pass cannot be used for this train It's not just for the Shinkansen; it also covers local trains, Non-Reserved Limited Express seats, plus: ・Echizen Railway ・Manyosen ・Toyama Chiho Railway City Tram ・West Japan JR Bus in the Kanazawa area ・Specific sections of IR Ishikawa Railway, Ainokaze Toyama Railway, and HAPI-LINE FUKUI

Located in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, Maruoka Castle is one of Japan’s only 12 surviving original castle towers. It is uniquely famous for its ancient wooden structure and is affectionately known as "Kasumi-ga-jo" (The Mist Castle). 🍁 Autumn Highlights · Ancient Keep & Autumn Colors: In the fall, the castle grounds transform into a sea of gold and crimson, creating a stunning contrast against the weathered dark wood of the tower. · Scale the Summit: Inside, you'll find the original, incredibly steep wooden stairs. The "Ippitsu Keijo" Museum of Japan's Shortest Letters is located right next to Maruoka Castle in Sakai City. This unique literary museum celebrates the art of the brief but powerful "Ippitsu Keijo" style of correspondence. 💌 The Story Behind "Japan’s Shortest Letter" The name comes from a legendary letter sent by Sengoku-era warrior Honda "Sakazaemon" Shigetsugu to his wife while he was away at war. The letter famously read: "Ippitsu Keijo: Hi no yojin, Osen nakasuna, uma koyase." Translation: "A brief word: Mind the fire; don't let Osen cry; keep the horses well-fed." In just a few words, he conveyed his deep care for his family and his instructions for their home. Inspired by this legacy, Maruoka established the "Ippitsu Keijo Award" to collect short, heartfelt letters, cementing its status as the home of Japan’s shortest letters. 🖋️ What’s Inside? · Award-winning letters from previous competitions. · Exhibits on the history of Japanese correspondence. · Historical artifacts related to Maruoka Castle and Honda Shigetsugu. · A chance to see how the Japanese express love, friendship, and life lessons through brevity. The museum itself is a modern architectural gem, featuring glass and wood that beautifully contrasts with the ancient castle nearby. 📍 Location: Right next to Maruoka Castle. 🎫 Admission: ~¥450 for adults (combined tickets available). 🚶 Tip: Visit both together—they are just a short walk apart.

Eiheiji is one of the two head temples of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism, founded by Zen Master Dogen in 1244. 🌊 Tojinbo (東尋坊) Tojinbo is one of the most iconic coastal sights in Fukui Prefecture, situated in Mikuni-cho, Sakai City. Spanning approximately 1 kilometer along the Sea of Japan, it is renowned for its massive, rugged columnar joints and cliffs. It has been officially designated as a National Scenic Spot and a Natural Monument of Japan. 🪨 Highlights ① Columnar Jointed Cliffs These pentagonal and hexagonal rock pillars were formed from cooling volcanic rock. Over eons, tectonic shifts and the relentless waves of the Sea of Japan have carved out this breathtaking sea-eroded landscape. ② Oike One of the most famous vantage points at Tojinbo, where the cliffs encircle the crashing waves. Looking down from the precipice is a truly heart-pounding experience. ③ Tojinbo Sightseeing Boat 🚢 This 30-minute cruise offers a unique perspective of the cliffs from the water. It also allows you to see landmarks that are difficult to view from land, such as Oshima Island, Lion Rock, Candle Rock, and Warship Rock. ④ Tojinbo Tower Head to the top for a panoramic bird's-eye view of the entire Tojinbo coastline. 🚃 Transportation From Fukui Station: Fukui Station → Echizen Railway Mikuni-Awara Line → Mikuni Station (approx. 50 mins) → Keifuku Bus bound for Tojinbo (approx. 10 mins) → Tojinbo Stop → 5-minute walk Total travel time is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Experience the real deal—authentic water with absolutely no dilution or recycling. A historic landmark in Awara Onsen, founded in 1884. The grand public baths and open-air baths use water drawn directly from the natural spring right on the premises. In this serene, Sukiya-style space, simply soaking in the water makes time melt away. This is a getaway for adults who choose quality over quantity. 📍Echizen Awara Onsen Tsuruya 4-601 Onsen, Awara City, Fukui 💰Approx. 35,000 JPY per person~ Save this for your next trip to Awara.

📍Kanazawa Omicho Market | Higashi Chaya District | Kenrokuen Garden | Kanazawa Castle | 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art 🚊Kanazawa → Awara Onsen　 🚍Awara Onsen → Tojinbo 📍Fukui Tojinbo | Awara Yunomachi | Awara Onsen D1 Kanazawa's tourist spots are so close together, I managed to see almost everything in just one day! ✊🏻 At Omicho Market, the early bird stalls open right at 7 AM, and every shop's seafood bowl looked so fresh it was hard to choose. The Higashi Chaya district had way more shops than I expected, so I took my time strolling around and stopped for an ice cream break. The combo ticket for Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle is a great deal ◎ Taking a leisurely stroll, I snapped tons of photos along the way 🤳🏻 Since it was a Friday, the exhibition zones at the 21st Century Museum were open until 8 PM. I got to take my time without worrying about the clock, and even checked out the special exhibition while I was there 👀 And to cap off the day, an amazing seafood bowl at Hyakubangai Anto near Kanazawa Station 🤤🤤🤤 D2 It took just under an hour to reach Awara Onsen Station. From there, I transferred to a bus heading to Tojinbo. After getting off the bus, I walked for about 15 minutes to Tojinbo while snacking on some street food. First up was lunch at IWABA Cafe. The weather was absolutely gorgeous that day, so I snapped plenty of beautiful photos 🤳🏻 I unfortunately ran out of time, and as for Oshima Island it's a bummer I couldn't make it. But hey, I'll just look forward to that next time. Before heading home, I made a pit stop at Awara Yunomachi and took a breather at the foot bath. It felt absolutely heavenly~ ♨️♨️♨️ 📷 1&2 Higashi Chaya District 3 Kenrokuen Garden 4&5 Kanazawa Station Area 6&7 Tojinbo 8 Awara Yunomachi

Let me take you to see a luxury hotel and a top-tier buffet in Japan! A buffet that serves branded A5 Wagyu beef steak. A buffet featuring Echizen crab, the most renowned snow crab from Fukui in Japan. A buffet loaded with grilled seafood, ranging from freshly grilled scallops with soy sauce and butter, Saikyo-yaki Gindara (sablefish), to yellowtail collar from the Chubu region. As for the raw seafood, sushi, and sashimi, there's Otoro sushi, bluefin tuna, yellowtail belly, famous sweet shrimp with roe, straw-roasted bonito, and even pressed grilled mackerel sushi that has absolutely no fishy taste. The Western dishes are equally impressive, featuring caviar, Iberico ham with melon, and a huge variety of Japanese seafood ceviche. The desserts are absolutely spectacular—a macaron tower, Häagen-Dazs, fresh-squeezed orange juice, cakes, and crepes. There was so much that I couldn't photograph it all! The beverage selection ranges from sweet drinks and matcha to beer and Japanese sake. You can definitely get your money's worth here! There are so many dishes that what I photographed only represents about half of the total menu. Most importantly, despite the massive selection, everything is genuinely delicious. It truly lives up to the reputation of the master chef who oversees JAL's First Class meals. All of this is part of the dinner buffet at a premier hotel in Awara Onsen, Fukui Prefecture. Hotel Grandia Housen. This is a famous, over 140-year-old clear water hot spring town in Japan, renowned for having over 70 onsen sources. This means each ryokan has water with different properties, and Grandia Housen exclusively owns three of these onsen sources. Speaking of the location, this area is the Echizen region of Fukui Prefecture, close to Nagoya, Toyama, and Kanazawa. It might not be super popular among Thai tourists yet, but did you know it’s a major hub for gourmet food in Japan? Echizen crab is the male snow crab, celebrated for being of the highest quality in Japan, just as famous as Tottori's Matsuba crab. Additionally, the country's number one specialty crab restaurant is also located right here in Echizen. Wakasa beef is the local branded A5 Wagyu of this place. It has an incredible aroma and flavor. Production is very limited, and it's rarely exported out of this region, making it both exceptional and rare. The Honmaguro (bluefin tuna) and yellowtail from this area offer excellent, bouncy textures. Moreover, the hotel uses large yellowtails weighing over 10 kg, which feature beautiful fat marbling. The Amaebi (sweet shrimp) served with roe is incredibly sweet. The grilled mackerel sushi is a must-buy for everyone because it's so tasty and not fishy at all. Try it, and you'll be amazed by how good it is. All these premium ingredients are gathered in one place and featured in this hotel's buffet. Crafted by the Head Chef of JAL's First Class, it truly elevates the culinary excellence here. If you are traveling to Toyama, Kanazawa, Nagoya, or Gifu, I highly recommend making a trip here. This is genuinely the best of Japan, guaranteed by the locals and by myself, having tried many famous dinner buffets across various regions. Honestly, compared to a well-known place like Ginza Happo, I personally think this is on an entirely different level. The hotel also boasts a stunningly beautiful Japanese garden, a footbath onsen, and three different styles of onsen pools offering views of the Japanese countryside. The service is authentic ryokan style—so attentive that you almost feel bad! Haha. Plus, there's a free-flow buffet of beer, wine, sweet drinks, ice cream, snacks, chocolates, and coffee where you can just grab a treat, sit back, and relax for free at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the beautiful Japanese garden. The location is also close to scenic spots and the most interactive aquarium where you can watch the penguin parade, pet a giant octopus, and interact with seals. It's fantastic. As for the price here, we booked a room with a private viewing bathtub, which included breakfast and dinner, the snack buffet, onsen access, a game room, and karaoke. We booked via Trip and got it for 9,800 THB for two people. If you choose a standard Japanese-style room and catch a promotion, it could be even cheaper. I also recommend checking direct booking prices. This price is an incredible value. You can't even get just an A5 Wagyu steak anywhere else for this price, not to mention the crabs, onsens, and all-day snacks. I highly recommend checking in right at 3:00 PM to fully enjoy everything for a long time. Okay, let's take a look at the menu photos in the post. I apologize that they aren't complete and not professionally shot—I only managed to capture half of the entire menu! But I guarantee that every single dish is incredibly delicious. In conclusion, this is a phenomenal hotel. The dinner buffet here is the absolute best in Japan. I really want everyone to come and try it!

Awara Music is a theater remaining in Awara Hot Springs, Fukui. It is a rare opportunity to experience the "hot springs + popular entertainment" culture that was once found in hot springs all over Japan. The neon-lit exterior evokes a Showa-era atmosphere, while the interior is compact yet immersive. The close distance to the audience and the emphasis on a lively atmosphere were impressive. For those looking to take their hot springs nightlife a step further, this is a memorable spot. Rather than being flashy, it has a stronger emphasis on "continuing Japanese hot springs culture," and can be said to be one of the places that symbolize the nightlife of Awara Hot Springs Town. Unfortunately, however, it will be closing at the end of March 2026. Address: 416 Onsen 3-chome, Awara City, Fukui Prefecture

Tomato cream pasta with snow crab at Woo Kyung's Kitchen in Awara City 🦀🍝 I discovered this creative Italian restaurant for lunch during a trip to Awara Onsen. I heard they serve pasta made with a whole snow crab, which is caught for only two months each year, from November to December, so I headed there without hesitation. The plate that arrived was a striking sight, with a snow crab shell perched atop the pasta. The crunchy, rich roe (inner and outer roe) and sweet crab meat intertwined with the tomato cream, creating a rich, savory experience. I dipped the remaining sauce into a baguette and savored it to the last bite. It was truly exquisite. A luxurious winter lunch in a hot spring resort. A memorable dish you can only find in Awara.
