I based in Le Châble, took the 07:00 PostBus to Fionnay, walked the forest road to the Louvie alp fork, then the ridge path—800 m gain—to the tarn at 09:30. The "mossy ridge walk" is the last 45 min: the path runs a grassy crest where Racomitrium and Dicranum mix with Vaccinium and the south face of the Grand Combin (4,314 m) is dead ahead. The lake cliff is 60 m of schist on the west shore, moss (Cratoneuron) in the seep, and the water reflects the Combin like a mirror at 07:00. Cabane Louvie (SAC, CHF 44 non-member bunk + CHF 30 half-board + CHF 10 fee 2026) sits 5 min from the shore. Mistake: I carried 1.5 L and the alp stream was dry by August—3 L, or refill at the Cabane. Another: I walked it in a softshell and the ridge wind was 40 km/h; hard shell. Starting from the Hotel de Mauvoisin, I followed the trail past the mighty dam and along the right bank toward the calm Lake and Col de Tsofeiret. Instead of heading to the Chanrion Hut, I couldn’t resist climbing toward the poetically named La Lire Rose pass at 3114 meters. The ascent was tough, but the views were worth every step! The pass itself leads nowhere except to the legendary Ruinette peak — yet for me, that quiet, breathtaking solitude was adventure enough.
