Hidden gems with zero negative reviews tested by travelers
Every year, there are a few cities that don’t show up on trending searches or in social media feeds, but those who visit them almost never leave a bad review. These seriously underrated destinations have travel costs ranging from 2-hour high-speed train rides to flights across half of China. The experiences vary widely, from wild nature and local life to artsy and traditional vibes. They don’t rely on marketing hype; they’re genuinely delightful. Here are eight places I’ve personally checked out, so you can follow with confidence.
1️⃣ Zhongwei | Ningxia
On my first evening there, I headed straight to the old town’s Gaomiao Bao’an Temple.
⏰ At 5:30 PM, after the tourists had left, the sunset gilded the temple’s eaves. Bao’an Temple has free admission, but remember to bring a pack of cigarettes and some fruit—locals offer these when praying, which I found quite interesting. Afterward, I found a small “Old Zhongwei Noodle Shop” in a nearby alley. 🍜 A bowl of wormwood noodles cost 15 yuan, with a rich, sour, and spicy flavor. The owner said they close at 8 PM or when sold out.
The next morning, I went to Shapotou.
⚠️ Don’t buy the full-price ticket. Get the combined ticket for the Yellow River area plus the desert area for 80 yuan. You can spend four to five hours there. Enter through the east gate, take the shuttle to the Yellow River area, try sand sliding first, then float down the river on a sheepskin raft. The raft is made of real sheepskin, gently drifting on the Yellow River, giving a surreal feeling of time travel.
⏰ Finish the Yellow River area before 11 AM and head to the desert area before the sun gets too hot, or the sand will be hot enough to cook an egg.
2️⃣ Harbin | Heilongjiang
In winter, don’t just focus on the Ice and Snow World in Harbin. I recommend visiting Volga Manor during the day. 🚄 It’s a 40-minute taxi ride from downtown, and tickets cost 50 yuan. The manor is full of old Russian-style buildings, and after snow, it feels like stepping into the scenes of The Hunter’s Sketches.
⏰ Arrive at 2 PM. The light filtering through the pine trees makes every photo look like a masterpiece. There’s a Russian restaurant in the park. 🍜 Borscht with black rye bread costs 38 yuan and is very filling.
At night, visit the Ice and Snow World.
⚠️ Don’t buy the first wave of night tickets. Tickets after 7 PM are the best value because the lights are the highlight. Head straight to the Ferris wheel and the big slide. The lines can be nearly two hours, but the view of the entire park’s ice sculptures from above is worth it.
🍜 The park sells roasted red sausages for 15 yuan each. Don’t buy too many. Eat while strolling around the outside of Saint Sophia Cathedral. When the lights come on, it looks like a fairy tale.
📍 Remember, there’s a small angle on the west side of the cathedral square where you can avoid crowds and capture a sense of solitude.
3️⃣ Shantou | Guangdong
The streets of Shantou are full of lively local life. I was woken up at 6 AM by the sound of mahjong outside, so I went out to find breakfast.
📍 Near Zhongshan Pavilion in Xiaogongyuan, there’s an old shop called “Old Mom’s Zongqiu” with a tiny storefront that’s easy to miss.
🍜 One double-cooked zongqiu costs 10 yuan. It’s a mix of sweet and savory, with glutinous rice as soft as a cloud.
⚠️ Don’t eat inside. Take it to “Aixi Dry Noodles” nearby—dry noodles with pork offal soup for 20 yuan. The noodles are chewy, and the broth is piping hot.
After eating, head straight to Nan’ao Island.
🚄 Take bus 105 from downtown to under the Nan’ao Bridge, then taxi onto the island. The whole trip takes about 1.5 hours. Rent an electric scooter on the island for 40 yuan a day and ride along the coast to Qing’ao Bay.
⏰ After 4 PM, when the tide recedes, you can find all kinds of sea snails on the beach.
📍 Next to the Tropic of Cancer Plaza is “Sister Xu’s Dishes.” 🍜 Seaweed fried rice and oyster omelet together cost 60 yuan, about 30 yuan per person, and you’ll be full. Don’t rush back at night. Stay at a guesthouse on the island and watch the sunrise the next morning, when the sea turns a rosy red.
4️⃣ Xinyang | Henan
Xinyang’s charm starts with the mountains. Take a taxi from downtown to Jigong Mountain. 🚄 It’s a 40-minute ride, and tickets cost 60 yuan.
⚠️ Don’t take the cable car; it’s not worth it. Hike the Changsheng Valley trail instead. You’ll hear streams and be shaded by trees all the way. It takes about 40 minutes to reach Baoxiao Peak.
⏰ Arrive at 8 AM when the mountain mist hasn’t lifted yet, making it feel like a fairyland.
🍜 The mountaintop restaurant’s Nanwan fish head costs 48 yuan per serving. The fish is as tender as tofu.
In the afternoon, head down and visit Nanwan Lake.
📍 There’s a “Tea Island” by the lake, full of Xinyang Maojian tea plantations.
🍜 The tea house on the island serves fresh tea for 15 yuan a cup, with a sweet aftertaste.
⚠️ Don’t buy tea at the scenic area entrance; it’s expensive. Find an old shop in the alleys to buy loose tea for 80 yuan per jin. It tastes better than what’s sold on the street.
5️⃣ Shannan | Tibet
Shannan is a place with thin air but strong faith. I rented a car for a day to visit Yamdrok Lake. 🚄 A round-trip taxi from downtown costs 500 yuan. It’s best to share with three others.
⚠️ Don’t go to the viewing platform. Tickets cost 60 yuan, but the view is average.
📍 Ask the driver to stop near Rituo Temple, where there are fewer people and the lake’s blue looks unreal.
⏰ At 2 PM, the sunlight hits the lake directly, making the surface sparkle like shattered diamonds.
If you have time, 📌 I recommend staying overnight near Pumoyong Lake.
⚠️ The altitude reaches 5,000 meters. Families with kids should be cautious, but solo travelers will find it worth it. The starry sky by the lake is breathtaking.
🍜 Bring self-heating rice meals. Along the way, there are only small Tibetan stalls selling instant noodles for 10 yuan a bowl.
6️⃣ Yulin | Guangxi
Yulin’s surprises are hidden in the mountains. Drive from downtown to Darongshan National Forest Park. 🚄 It’s about an hour, and tickets cost 60 yuan.
⏰ Leave at 8 AM to arrive before the morning mist clears.
📍 The main peak, Lotus Peak, is surrounded by primeval forest, so dense you can’t see the sky. Halfway up is Lotus Mountain Villa. 🍜 Their “Rongshan bamboo shoot chicken” costs 88 yuan. The broth is so fresh you could drink two bowls.
If you’re with elderly or children, ⚠️ don’t climb the main peak. Take the “Nine Waterfalls Valley” trail instead. It’s flat and takes half an hour, with three waterfalls to see.
🍜 After descending, buy a bag of “Yulin beef jerky” at the entrance for 40 yuan. It’s chewy and tastes better than supermarket brands.
📍 Don’t forget to check in at the entrance of Yuntian Cultural City. The city gate tower is impressive.
7️⃣ Baishan | Jilin
Baishan’s essence is Changbai Mountain. Don’t foolishly go up the north slope; I recommend the west slope.
🚄 Take a taxi from Baishan city to the west slope transfer center. It’s about 1.5 hours and costs 150 yuan.
⚠️ Book tickets online a day in advance. There might be no tickets on site.
⏰ Arrive at 7:30 AM to catch the first bus up the mountain. After getting off, climb 1,442 steps. It’s tiring, but when you reach the top, the Heavenly Lake appears like a huge blue gem. The climb is worth it.
🍜 After descending, eat hot spring eggs at the “Hot Spring Egg Plaza” at the foot of the mountain. Three eggs cost 10 yuan, with runny yolks.
⚠️ Don’t eat barbecue in the scenic area; it’s expensive. Back in Baishan city, 📍 visit “Old Baishan Restaurant.” 🍜 Sauerkraut stewed meat costs 38 yuan, and sweet and sour pork costs 42 yuan. Portions are so large two people can’t finish.
⏰ Take a walk along the Hun River after 7 PM. The river breeze is refreshing.
8️⃣ Shijiazhuang | Hebei
Shijiazhuang’s most underrated feature is its surrounding ancient charm. My first stop was Zhaozhou Bridge.
🚄 Take bus 216 from Shijiazhuang station directly there. It’s a 1-hour ride, and tickets cost 40 yuan.
⏰ Arrive at 9 AM when it’s quiet. Sunlight shines on the bridge, and the dragon patterns on the stone railings are clearly visible.
⚠️ Don’t take photos on the bridge; the angle isn’t good. Walk to the south bank and shoot northward to capture the entire arch.
In the afternoon, return to the city and 📍 visit Zhengding Ancient City.
📍 The Longxing Temple’s giant Buddha is impressive. Tickets cost 50 yuan. The temple’s thousand-hand Guanyin statue is five stories tall. When looking up, you instinctively step back.
🍜 At the temple entrance, “Wang’s Shaomai” costs 20 yuan per basket. The wrappers are thin and the filling is generous.
⚠️ The ancient city has no admission fee, but Longxing Temple is closed on Tuesdays. Don’t make a wasted trip.
⏰ At dusk, walk along the ancient city wall and watch the sunset over the city towers. The quietness will make you forget you’re in Shijiazhuang.
Eight cities, eight ways of life. From the vast northwest to the snowy northeast, from the lively Lingnan to the sacred lakes of Tibet, there’s always one you’ll want to take with you. The evening breeze in Zhongwei and the sunrise on Nan’ao Island are my personal top picks. Which city have you explored or found surprises in? Share in the comments.
