The Alte Hofhaltung that translates to the ‘Old Court’ is a historic attraction in the beautiful city of Bamberg. The Alte Hofhaltung area comprises of former houses and farm buildings that belong to the Episcopal palace from the 15th century. By the building is a vast courtyard with a late Gothic arcaded frame. The court is also home to a historical museum and half timbered building with spectacular rooftops. The courtyard with its beautiful hanging baskets of flowers was a sight to behold! The architecture is very interesting as well. You can't go inside but it's worth a look see! Standing there will definitely make you feel going back in time. The sculpture “Meeting“ by the Chinese artist Wang Shugang (chinesisch 王书刚), depicts eight lifesize squatting men, positioned in a circle on Schönleinsplatz Square near a busy crossroads in Hainberg park. There is a beautiful garden with another statue. The work of art is made of bronze, varnished in red and goes back to an exhibition in the year 2013, CIRCLES, when it was first shown in Bamberg. Thanks to private donations and private funding, the eight red painted bronze casts are now permanently in the city since year 2016. Relax the environment pleasantly. Eating ice cream makes me happy. It’s a mouth-watering dessert for everyone. We have a quick rest and enjoying dessert in Buonissimo after a long walk in Bamberg. One of the most important sights of Bamberg is the historic town hall. According to legend the bishop of Bamberg did not grant the citizens any land for the construction of a town hall. This prompted the townsfolk to ram stakes into the river Regnitz to create an artificial island between the two districts, on which the Bamberg Town Hall (Altes Rathaus )was erected. We went to this old town hall in different timing - evening and morning. The pictures really look good in both timings. The most beautiful view of the town hall is from the Geyerswörthsteg south of the town hall. The former fishermen's district in Bamberg's Island City is endearingly known as Little Venice (Klein Venedig). This district is characterised by half-timbered buildings that prop each other up and by tiny, pretty gardens. Pretty houses by the river in Bamberg. Very nice ambience, it is best to walk upstream on the right so you have a very nice illumination of the houses that are directly on the water and remind a little of Venice. The monastery is situated at the peak of the hill exhibiting a magnificent view of the city of Bamberg. The city is built over seven hills each with a church at its peak. The St. Michael's Monastery holds the highest altitude in comparison with the other peaks. We went today but the church has been closed for several years due to the restoration. Good thing it has a very beautiful, well maintained garden. It takes a good hike to come here but once you are on the top, you have a breathe taking view of Bamberg with the cathedral and residence shining in the background. We ate breakfast here today as it had a lot of choices delicious cakes, pastries and savouries. Really pleasant, polite and helpful staff. The selection of cakes and savouries was pretty good, all at low prices. They also have tables outside on the Green market . The cafe is located at Franz-Ludwig-Str. 5C, 96047 Bamberg. Cozy Italian restaurant serving pizza, pasta & traditional mains in a warm, brick-lined space. Nice change from traditional German food! My husband ordered seafood pasta and I choose a big plate of antipasti. Both dishes were freshly prepared, nicely presented and delicious. Wonderful experience all around. Highly recommend! After a few wonderful days in Bavaria, Germany, from Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle, Königssee, Bamberg to Regensburg, each city left me with unique memories. However, this trip didn't end in Germany; instead, another exciting chapter in the Nordic world was about to begin—Finland. At the end of November 2017, I set foot in this Nordic country, known as the "Land of a Thousand Lakes," for the first time, flying from Central Europe to the Arctic Circle to experience a completely different natural landscape and pace of life. ⸻ Regensburg, the turning point of the journey I spent half the morning strolling through Regensburg, admiring the medieval cityscape along the Danube River. Regensburg is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Germany and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Crossing the 900-year-old Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge), visiting the magnificent St. Peter's Cathedral, and then savoring the 500-year-old Historische Wurstkuchl (grilled sausage) by the river, we created a last beautiful memory of our German journey. In the afternoon, we returned to Regensburg Central Station and took the German Railway ICE train to Frankfurt Airport. The familiar Bavarian countryside scenery continued outside the window, but my anticipation for the upcoming Nordic journey had already begun. Since we had an early flight the next morning, we chose to stay at the ACHAT Comfort Airport Hotel near Frankfurt Airport and used the hotel's shuttle bus to and from the airport, saving us the stress of catching our train the next morning. ⸻ Flying to Scandinavia on Lufthansa The next morning, we took the hotel shuttle bus to Frankfurt Airport Terminal 1. I highly recommend the [traditional bakery] at the airport; their German bread is really delicious 😋. This time, I chose to fly directly to Helsinki with Lufthansa. Compared to connecting flights, the flight time is only about three and a half hours, and it's a very convenient airline for traveling to and from the Nordic countries. Shortly after takeoff, the German plains gradually disappeared beneath the clouds. As we flew over the Baltic Sea, the scenery outside the window began to change. Vast forests, lakes, and scattered islands create Finland's unique landscape. Even though it was late November, there were still patches of snow on the ground, giving a taste of the Nordic winter. When the captain announced that the plane was beginning its descent, I knew that my first trip to Finland had officially begun. ⸻ First Impressions of Helsinki Upon arriving at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, the first thing that struck me was the airport's brightness and simplicity. While not as busy as a large international airport, it was very orderly, and the immigration process was very smooth. After leaving the terminal, you can choose to take the airport bus or train to Helsinki city center, which takes about thirty minutes to reach the central station. Finland's public transportation system is quite comprehensive and easy to navigate, even for first-time visitors. The streetscape is noticeably different from Germany's. The roads are wider, the buildings have clean, simple lines, there are fewer cars on the streets, and pedestrians aren't as bustling as in other European tourist cities. The whole city exudes a quiet and unhurried atmosphere, making you unconsciously slow down. After checking into the Omena Hotel in the city center and dropping off my luggage, I prepared to begin my first day exploring Helsinki. ⸻ First Impressions of Scandinavia My most profound impression of Finland on my first visit wasn't its magnificent scenery, but rather its "quiet." The streets were rarely noisy; vehicles obeyed traffic rules, and pedestrians weren't in a hurry. Even in the capital, a rare tranquility was maintained. In late November, the daytime temperature in Helsinki was only a few degrees Celsius, and it began to darken before four in the afternoon. The crisp air reminded me that I had arrived in a Nordic country at a much higher latitude than Germany. However, the cold weather didn't rob the city of its warmth. Warm lights, clean streets, and an orderly pace of life instead revealed a different kind of Nordic charm.
