Winter in Tibet has low oxygen levels which can easily cause altitude sickness, but many scenic spots are even more beautiful in winter. This time, I spent ten days in Lhasa and Nyingchi, seeing the Nam Co ice push, Nanga Parbat golden sunlight on the mountain, Laigu blue ice cave, and Yarlung ice wall. It was an incredibly stunning trip. Here’s a travel guide to share, suitable for solo travelers or groups. 1️⃣ Lhasa The main attractions in Lhasa city are the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, and the Tibet Museum. Nearby highlights include Yamdrok Lake and Nam Co. Except for Barkhor Street, all city attractions require advance booking via a mini-program. Winter visits to the Potala Palace are free, while tickets for Jokhang Temple must be purchased on-site. It’s recommended to share a guide at the entrance for about 50 RMB per person. For Yamdrok Lake (P1-3) and Nam Co (P4-6), it’s best to join a day tour. Most tours on Trip.com have large groups, but we chose a small group of four people, which included complimentary camera and drone shooting, plenty of oxygen, and a flexible itinerary negotiated with the guide, avoiding unnecessary stops. The biggest surprise on the Yamdrok Lake tour was passing by a spot called Chayangtso (P7-9). We instantly agreed with the guide to check it out and saw a perfect ice surface—super fun and very photogenic. For Nam Co, we joined the same guide’s tour. After visiting the north shore, the guide drove us close to the lake to see the ice push (said to be similar to what you pay to see on the south shore), and we also captured the sunset and dry land onions—totally worth it. 2️⃣ Nyingchi Winter is the best time to see Nanga Parbat’s golden sunlight on the mountain (P10), Laigu Glacier (P11), and Yarlung Glacier (P12-14). Recently, you can even go on the ice. We also visited New Cuoba Songco but were very disappointed. 1. To see Nanga Parbat, it’s best to stay in Suosong Village and contact the homestay owner to help arrange carpooling. The fare from Nyingchi Station to the homestay is 100 RMB per person. Be sure to check the weather and forecast before going to ensure you can see the golden sunlight on the mountain. 2. If you want to visit Basongco, you can arrange carpooling from Suosong Village. A day trip from Suosong Village to Basongco, New Cuo, and Nyingchi Town costs about 550-650 RMB. The more people you share with, the cheaper it gets. 3. Laigu and Yarlung Glaciers require at least two days. On the first day, travel from Nyingchi to Ranwu Town by carpool for 200 RMB per person or by bus for 162 RMB per person. It takes about 7 hours to reach the Old Soldier Restaurant in Ranwu Town, where the owner can help arrange carpooling. On the second day, visit Yarlung and Laigu Glaciers. Be sure to tell the driver to go to Yarlung first, then Laigu. At the Yarlung scenic area, local villagers drive you up the mountain for 200 RMB per person. Afterward, they drive you to the shore of Laigu Glacier, so you don’t have to walk there yourself. The Laigu ticket costs 210 RMB per person. After finishing, you can return to Nyingchi by bus, carpool, or hitchhiking. Ask the Old Soldier Restaurant owner about bus and carpool options. Yarlung is highly recommended, while Laigu mainly features a blue ice cave that requires queuing for photos. Both are very photogenic. You can visit both for different scenery since you’re already there. 3️⃣ Some small tips 1. If you arrive directly in Lhasa, it’s best to use oxygen on the first day; otherwise, it’s really hard to sleep. 2. Monitor your blood oxygen levels at all times. Your oxygen might already be very low even if you only feel a little dizzy. At that point, you need to use oxygen. Always rely on your blood oxygen readings.

It's blue ice season again! Head to the glacier and experience this pure blue that has existed for billions of years. 【Lagu Glacier】 📍 Located in Ranwu Town, Baxoi County, Qamdo City, Tibet 🎟️ Ticket price 150, sightseeing car 60. Self-driving is allowed, but snow tires and snow chains are required in winter. 📣 Lagu Glacier comprises 6 glaciers in total, divided into Line A and Line B. The blue ice cave is on Line A. After parking, you need to walk about 1km to get there, so bring crampons. 🧥 Lagu Glacier is at an altitude of 3500 meters. On the plateau, avoid strenuous exercise, stay warm and protected from the cold. Make sure to wear down jackets, hats, and gloves.

Laigu Glacier is a natural scenic spot located in Ranwu Town, Babu County, Chamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region, and is designated as a National Geopark. Laigu Glacier is the largest glacier group in the Yarlung Tsangpo River basin, consisting of six glaciers: Meixi, Yalong, Dongga, Ruojiao, Xiongjia, and Niuma, arranged in a U-shape, with the glaciers extending into the forested areas. Laigu Glacier features extensive ancient glacier relics and rich ecological landscapes, making it an important area for studying the climate and geology of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Self-driving route: Starting from Babu County, drive along the east bank of Ranwu Lake to the "Wacun" intersection, turn left towards the direction from Ranwu Lake to Zayü County, and continue about 15 kilometers to reach Laigu Village. The road from Ranwu to Bomi is the only road leading to Laigu; the road surface is good but has many curves, so please drive safely. Hiking route: Recommended hiking route: Laigu Glacier → Muze Glacier → Quta Temple (Nunnery) → Zhana Monastery (Buddhist temple) → Parlung Tsangpo River → Viewing platform (for a distant view of Midui Glacier) → Ranwu Lake → Wacun → Longbu Village (or return). Muze Glacier is the longest glacier within Laigu Glacier, and although the hiking route is relatively long, the scenery is more spectacular. Best viewing spots: 1. Laigu Glacier Viewing Platform: Located on the hillside south of Laigu Village, it is the best place to enjoy panoramic views of Laigu Glacier. 2. Parlung Tsangpo River: Traveling along the road by the Parlung Tsangpo River allows close-up views of the beautiful Yarlung Tsangpo River system. 3. Midui Glacier Viewing Platform: Located within the Midui Glacier scenic area, it is the best spot to view Midui Glacier. Notes: 1. Due to the high altitude of the Laigu area, it is recommended to undergo high-altitude acclimatization training in advance. 2. When hiking in winter, pay attention to keeping warm; it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes and windproof, cold-resistant clothing. 3. Please respect local residents and religious beliefs, and comply with scenic area regulations. 4. Laigu is a high-altitude Tibetan area, so it is advisable to prepare high-energy food and drinking water.

The bridge is engraved with the symbol of the ancient Tang-Tubo Road and is a must-pass route to Ranwu Lake. Standing on the bridge, you can overlook the entire village and valley scenery, which is very spectacular. - 5️⃣ Dongda Mountain, the highest point on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (Recommended) Located in Qudeng Township, Mangkang County, Chamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region, on G318 (Huniu Line), it is one of the highest mountain passes on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. From the viewing platform, you can overlook the entire mountain range and grassland scenery, and on clear days, you can see distant snow mountains and glaciers. 💦 On the last day of 2025, we saw the dreamy Blue Ice Cave at the Laigu Glacier. 💎 The Blue Ice Cave is a magical masterpiece of nature, with every ice crystal shining brightly. However, the Blue Ice Cave is not visible all year round; it only appears at specific times. On November 18th this year, we were lucky to encounter the Blue Ice Cave. 🏔️ We took a bus to Laigu Glacier, and on the way, we saw snow-capped mountains, blue skies, and white clouds. The bus ride was long before we reached our destination. After getting off, we saw a vast glacier. The glacier here was even more magnificent than I had imagined! 🧊 Walking on the glacier, the ice beneath our feet was very hard and comfortable to step on. Although the weather was cold, the sunlight was great. Standing on the glacier, looking up, you could see the blue sky and snowy mountains. I looked at the distant snowy peaks and thought, "I wish I could live in a place like this!" 🌈 After walking on the glacier for a long time, we finally saw the Blue Ice Cave. It was truly dreamy! Each Blue Ice Cave felt like a small world of its own. 🍜 We had Tibetan hot pot on the glacier, and it tasted especially delicious! After eating, we took more photos. Tibetan Glaciers I’ve Visited So Far: 📍Midui Glacier: You drive in and then hike two kilometers to view the glacier from a distance. Not recommended, purely a waste of ticket money. 📍Karola Glacier: On the way from Yamdrok Lake to Shigatse, even less recommended—wouldn’t want to go even if paid. 📍Qudeng Nima: Very beautiful, but currently inaccessible. 📍Xianggelila Glacier: Southeast Tibet, drive to the checkpoint at the entrance, then walk a little over a kilometer to the lake. We didn’t enter the glacier itself, but I heard you can take a local Tibetan herder’s motorcycle inside. No entrance fee, which is important. 📍Laigu Glacier: I’ve traveled the route into Tibet countless times, but this was my first time entering Laigu. Before going, I heard various opinions about the ticket price, accommodation, and whether it’s worth visiting. Only after coming here myself can I speak about this natural glacier, one of the world’s three major glaciers. About Tickets: Uniform price: 150 RMB per person. Tickets are bought at the park entrance. If you stay in Laigu Village, you get a 65 RMB refund per person. Actually charged: 75 RMB for the ticket + 10 RMB insurance. If you stay in a village hotel, remember to get the owner’s stamp and then get a refund from staff at the entrance when you leave. I don’t know about staying outside the village, didn’t ask. About Accommodation: Except for Songtsam Laigu Mountain Lodge, all other accommodations in Laigu Village are Tibetan-style guesthouses. Prices aren’t very high, they have heating but it’s not very warm, and electric blankets are provided. The temperature in Laigu Village at night is very low, so it’s indeed a bit cold. If you can stay in Ranwu Town, it’s better to stay there as the accommodation conditions are better. The parking lot at the scenic area is less than two kilometers from the glacier entrance. If you don’t want to walk or have altitude sickness, you can ride a horse for 100 RMB per person round trip. About Access to the Glacier: You can! Before I came, I heard people say you can’t go on the glacier, can’t enter ice caves, and can only enter before 8 a.m.—all kinds of rumors flying around. After arriving, I found out: now you can walk on the ice surface, and there’s no need to be there before 8 a.m. Photos look better with sunlight, making the ice appear bluer. For the ice cave, there’s a queue to check in; remember to wear plenty of clothes because it’s really cold! Wearing non-slip shoes and bringing crampons is necessary. It snowed the night before we went, so the ice surface was covered with snow and luckily not slippery, but the ice cave was still very slippery. So bring crampons if you can—safety first. The blue ice photos online are all edited; the actual color visible to the naked eye isn’t that blue. If you’re obsessed with the online pictures, you don’t need to go specially. By the way, the Laigu Glacier ticket includes Yalong Glacier, which you can also enter, but I didn’t go there, so no tips. Staff said it’s accessible. So: Don’t get to know a person or a place through others’ words. It’s necessary to go see and understand for yourself. May we all grow into wise adults.

I've just traveled through Nyingchi, Bomi, Motuo, and Chamdo areas, saw glaciers, but it was more than just glaciers. It was my first time seeing such magnificent snow mountains and glaciers up close. I didn't suffer from altitude sickness along the way, and there were hardly any people. This trip ranks in my top 3 experiences ever‼️ It felt like stepping into a quiet fairy tale world, and I want to share this unique, off-the-beaten-path treasure route with you all~ - I've never really liked crowded, popular tourist spots, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found this route. Because not only is there the Laigu Glacier, but also the Xianggelila Glacier. You can see Namcha Barwa and also visit Sapu. Most importantly, there are hikes in the Motuo rainforest and Baipulong Valley. The first half of the trip mostly stays between 2000-3000 meters, with lots of trees and humid air, making altitude sickness less likely. The altitude rises in the second half, but by then you’re mostly acclimated, and mild altitude sickness is manageable. 2️⃣ There aren’t many people recently, so if you want to see quiet scenery and the golden sunlight on the mountains 🌄 now is a great time to go. 3️⃣ To go to Motuo, you need to get a border permit in advance. Remember to write “Nyingchi area.” If you go from Bomi, the road conditions are okay but very winding ⚠️. It’s recommended to have an experienced driver or join a tour. 4️⃣ The weather here changes a lot—you can experience sun, rain, fog, and snow all in one day. Dress in layers like an onion: a windproof jacket + thin down jacket + quick-dry inner layer. Don’t forget to bring a hat! 5️⃣ Some places on the road have limited dining options, so bring snacks, chocolate, and a thermos cup, and drink plenty of hot water. 6️⃣ For photos, bright-colored clothes stand out beautifully against the snow mountains. Remember to bring a friend who can take good photos or find a guide who can. 7️⃣ Respect local customs—don’t step on prayer flags or mani stones, and always smile and ask before taking photos of people.
