Entrance to Pelister NP is free or nominal depending on the gate; nobody checked my ID, but carry passport because you are in a border-sensitive region near Greece and Albania. Boots with ankle support matter more here than on Tara — the Debel Rid stone base is loose, and the last 2 km plateau before the lake looks flat but is hummocky wetland. I wore trail runners and twisted slightly; a woman from Bitola in full leather boots laughed politely. Start before 8 AM in summer: the ridge bakes, shade is rare above 1,800 m, and thunderstorms build after 2 PM. If you want to extend: the hut can be booked for the night, and from the lake it is ~13 km / 690 m more to Pelister summit (2,601 m) — I did not, because the forecast turned. Common rookie move is treating Golemo Ezero as "a 2-hour walk" because the Info-center sign says medium-hard; medium-hard in Macedonian alpine terms means a full-day effort with food, layers, and offline maps (signal dies at Semafori). Open question: is the Prespa-side approach from Brajcino (4 h up) better for scenery or just longer logistically? I only did the Bitola side and would love a compare from someone who has done both in the same week.
