| How to shop at the duty-free stores on the China-Laos border. How can you miss the unique charm of duty-free shops when saying goodbye to a foreign land? If you're returning to China by land from Laos, consider visiting the Jinglan duty-free shop near the Mohan port. I searched for this shop online for a long time and couldn't find any guides, so I decided to explore it myself. 🚉Transportation tips: The duty-free shop is a bit far from Mohan station, it's recommended to take a car, there are drivers at the station exit offering rides to the duty-free shop. There are also shared electric cars at the entrance of the train station, which seem to be developed by Chinese, and you can use WeChat to scan and ride. However, the dirt road at the entrance of the train station is not very friendly. It's worth noting that this place might be less popular, as it's not on several commonly used maps. There is a point on Google Maps called Sabuydee duty Free, but it's not this one. I trusted Google and went to the wrong place first, only to find that the shelves were almost empty, with only a very small amount of cigarettes and alcohol. Then I hailed a tricycle on the roadside and reached this duty-free shop. The building's exterior is very conspicuous, and it covers a large area. Inside, there are three floors: the first floor sells cosmetics, the second floor sells watches, clothes, and bags, and the third floor sells food and cigarettes. Overall, the range of goods is quite comprehensive. I focused on the first and third floors, the cosmetics on the first floor are cheaper than the counters in China. The third floor has cigarettes and Lao coffee, duty-free cigarettes are really cheap, a pack of Zhonghua is only 310, and Zi Yun is 90, but be careful, customs regulations allow you to bring a maximum of two packs of cigarettes when entering the country, so don't buy too much. Inside the store, I bumped into a travel group from China. After chatting with them, I learned that they were on a day trip from Xishuangbanna, and they could come to the duty-free shop for shopping with a border travel permit. ✨Tips: The place is very close to the port, just turn left and walk for about ten minutes to reach customs. Before returning to the country, please carefully check the customs regulations and do not carry items beyond the allowed range to avoid financial loss.

Boten- Bodhi Hotel. To all overlanders who are waiting to cross the border to China, Bodhi Hotel is the place for stay. This is the only decent hotel with huge parking lots outside the hotel. The hotel seems to have expected overlanders to stay there. Nothing much to do in Boten, except to eat and rest up to cross the border. WeChat is available to use to pay for food and necessities.

I stayed at the Ming Hua International Hotel in Boten, in northern Laos, near the border with China. It's a relatively large and prominent hotel even within the Boten area, which is undergoing development with Chinese capital, and it was very convenient for train users and travelers crossing the border. The first thing that impressed me was the building's presence. During the day, it's a very noticeable large hotel in the surrounding area, and it has a modern atmosphere amidst the new Chinese-developed townscape. At night, it's lit up and looks quite magnificent in the quiet surrounding town. Boten still feels like an area under development, but I think this is a very solid hotel within that context. Check-in was handled at the spacious front desk. The staff seemed to be mainly focused on assisting Chinese-speaking guests, but they also seemed accustomed to foreign guests, and the check-in process was relatively smooth. It was a strange feeling to be in Laos, yet almost like I was in the "Chinese economic zone." One convenient feature of this hotel was the shuttle service to Boten Railway Station. The hotel had a notice posted about shuttle service times, which I thought was a very helpful service for travelers using the Laos-Laos Railway. Boten Station is a bit far from the town, so having a shuttle service is a great advantage. The twin room I stayed in was quite spacious and felt new and clean overall. The bed was firm and comfortable, allowing me to fully recover from the fatigue of long-distance travel. The interior design was simple, but it was functional, as is typical of Chinese hotels, and had everything I needed. The shower room was also relatively new, and the plumbing was clean. The hot water flowed well, and I didn't experience the water pressure issues often found in regional hotels abroad. All the necessary amenities were provided, so even last-minute stays shouldn't be a problem. For breakfast, they served rice noodles (a noodle dish commonly eaten in the Yunnan region of China). It's characteristic of this area to experience a food culture that's quite similar to China, even while in Laos. The mild seasoning made it easy to eat in the morning, and it was perfect as a meal before traveling. While Boten itself feels more like a transportation hub for travel between China and Laos than a tourist destination, this hotel is a very reliable choice. It's especially convenient for train travelers, those planning to cross the border, and those heading to China via Boten. Bo Ting has become more and more popular among Hong Kongers recently. I chose to stay at the Starry Sky Resort Hotel on this trip. The most attractive thing for me is that it is located in the center of the city. The trip was mainly about walking, taking pictures and relaxing near the hotel. The hotel's location is unbeatable, right in the Fu Xing Road International Business and Finance Centre, just downstairs with restaurants, department stores and entertainment facilities. There will be a special person to clean every day, so you don't have to worry about anything. Fully equipped, plus simple and elegant decor, some rooms have balconies with a view of the city center, which is particularly comfortable to talk to friends. If it rains, the hotel will take the initiative to give umbrellas, courtesy is really a plus. The biggest advantage is the value for money, reasonable prices, new facilities, convenient location, and free breakfast, plus transfer station and transfer port service, super easy access. I have long dreamt of traveling to Europe by train from Malaysia, but such a journey would take too long, and the opportunity has not yet come. However, Alhamdulillah, I was still granted the chance to experience an exciting train journey with my family from Beijing to Malaysia recently. Kunming-Mohan · Originally planned to travel directly to Vientiane by sleeper train, but ticket availability forced us to stop in Mohan (China-Laos border town) first. · High-speed train covering 1,000 km taking 5 hours 15 minutes. · Arrived in the evening and stayed one night in Mohan as the border closed at 5:30 PM. · The next morning, we walked across the border to Boten, then took a shuttle bus to Boten Railway Station. Boten-Vientiane · Managed by Laos-China Railway. · Only 2nd class hard seats available—smaller but cushioned (non-reclining). · Travel distance 428 km taking 5 hours 20 minutes. Vientiane-Bangkok · International route operated by The State Railway of Thailand (SRT). · Successfully secured sleeper coach tickets. · About 30 minutes after departing Vientiane, the train stopped for 90 minutes at Nong Khai Station (Thailand) for immigration and customs clearance. · Journey length:650 km taking 12 hours 48 minutes. Bangkok-Padang Besar (Malaysia) · Sleeper train covering 960 km taking 16 hours. · Padang Besar station serves as both a Thai and Malaysian immigration checkpoint. Overall Experience The journey was comfortable, safe, convenient, and enjoyable even with young children (depending on their adaptability and behavior). Total Ticket Cost (Per Adult) The total cost for Beijing to Padang Besar was approximately RM1,321 with cheaper seat options available.

#MarchGoodPlaces2025 Traffic tips: High-speed rail: departs from Kunming and terminates at Mohan. There are three trains a day. I chose the afternoon train, stayed in Mohan at night, and passed through the border easily the next morning. There are also three flights from Xishuangbanna to Mohan. I recommend the 7:45 one, which is just the right time! There are two ways to get from Mohan Railway Station to the port: ① Bus: 5 yuan, only one bus! ② Take a taxi: 20-30 yuan/person, I bargained it down to 60 yuan per taxi, and it takes 10 minutes to get there! Take notes on the exit process: Security check, customs, passport control, simple questions and answers, fast clearance. Tips: Friends with drones, please note that the urban area of ​​Laos is a warning zone!
