Briancon travel guide and discussion

A military engineer to King Louis XIV of France, Vauban began to oversee military works to consolidate the kingdom at the age of 34. Three of the 160 fortresses he built or restored are in the Hautes Alps. They are: Château de Quay, Montdauphin and Briancon. The latter two were listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2008. Due to the natural topography of Briancon, Vauban could not follow any existing model. He designed staggered vertical city fortifications and proposed the establishment of a fortress belt to enhance the defense of the town. The small town in the Briancon Fortress, which was built in the ancient Roman period, is particularly attractive for viewing. Even though it was planned and built so long ago, the drainage system in the city does not feel backward even by today's standards. The area where the Briancon Fortress is located has a recorded history dating back to the conquest of Gaul by Caesar the Great. It was ruled by the Ligurian lord Tannus, who was originally an opponent of Caesar, but later reached a settlement to continue to rule the territory. When Augustus, the successor of Caesar, suppressed the uprising of the Alpine tribes in Gaul in the Alps, Marcus Julius Cordius, the son and successor of Tanus, initially remained independent, but later reached an alliance with Augustus, and the family continued to rule the area and became part of the Roman Empire province until it was annexed by Nero and became part of the Alpine Province of Cotia. In 1040, Briancon and the surrounding valleys fell into the hands of the Count of Alban. Until 1713, according to the Treaty of Utrecht, Briancon and the surrounding valleys were all transferred to the jurisdiction of Savoy Province, and became part of modern France. In 1815, Briancon was able to successfully resist the siege of the Allied forces with the help of the solid fortress designed and built by Vauban. The new city of Briancon was built on the open space outside the fortress. It can be imagined that when the fortress was built, all the houses in the new city were open space, and all were within the killing range of the crossfire. #OverseasTravel #WorldHeritage #WorldHeritageCulturalRelics #EuropeTravel #Europe #Alps #Fortress #france #unesco #unescoworldheritage #briançon

#winterescape Briançon is one of Europe’s highest cities, set in the French Alps near the Italian border. Surrounded by mountains, it is famous for its Vauban fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protected key alpine routes. The old town, with steep streets, colorful façades, and historic churches, reflects centuries of military and mountain life. Today, Briançon combines rich history with outdoor adventure and alpine culture.

The establishment of the European Union has brought two direct benefits to the people: unified currency (except Switzerland) and the abolition of borders. On this trip, we drove directly from Hamburg to the famous French holiday destination Briancon near the Alps. We passed through Italy and Switzerland on the way, and I, with a Chinese passport, could pass without any obstacles and without a visa. Altkirch belongs to France, but it has an authentic German name. From this, it can be seen that this place used to belong to Germany and was occupied by France after Germany was defeated in World War I. After entering France from Germany, all the small villages and towns along the way have typical German names, which makes people sigh: the people in the past were too bitter, they changed their masters several times, and they had to learn French and German, and they were not at peace! Of course, there are also benefits. Many people are proficient in both languages! We visited Geneva, Switzerland along the way. It is backed by high mountains and faces a huge lake. Many sailboats sail on the lake, and the scenery along the lake is very charming! But when you go deep into the city, it's quite boring! The houses are tall and clean, with uniform colors, similar architectural structures, neat city appearance, and orderly, as if you have come to a certain factory! We stayed for a few hours and drove to our destination Briancon.

Sophie's French travel notes from Milan, Italy, through the mountainous town of Brian, in the French Alps, it stands on the hill to guard the people under the mountain. Entering the gate of the mountain city, it seems to pass through the space-time portal. There is a drainage channel in the middle of the mountain town street. It is estimated that the snow water introduced into the Alps is very clear. There are grocery stores, restaurant bars, and hand-sign gift shops on the street. Each decoration is exquisite and exudes a sense of history in the Middle Ages. If you want to enter the mountain castle to visit the ticket 8 euros, but the ancient city is large, it is estimated to take more than 2 hours, if the time is not enough, you can walk slowly down the street.
