Where to Eat in Cappadocia and What to Try?
In Cappadocia, there is a huge number of cafes and restaurants – from simple lokantas (canteens) to beautiful places with panoramic terraces. We saved food recommendations in advance, but once we got there, we realized it’s super easy to find a spot for lunch or dinner without them.
Yes, prices in Turkey are no longer as low as they used to be. Especially in popular tourist spots... but there's a nice bonus we love here! 👇
In almost every Turkish restaurant, even before the main courses, they bring you complimentary meze – several small appetizers. Usually, these are various yogurt and vegetable spreads, spicy snacks, sometimes pickles, along with bread and lavash. Plus, they refill it all for free (and seemingly unlimited... but we didn't push our luck😅). In many places, after the meal, they also offer free Turkish tea in traditional glasses and a small dessert – like halva.
So don't be surprised if you're already half-full by the time your main dish arrives. 😄
*️⃣ Fun fact: Turkey holds the world record for bread consumption. On average, one resident eats about 200 kilograms of bread a year (that's over 500 grams a day)!
📕 We also loved how they treat guests. As soon as our group of 6 walked in, the staff immediately started moving tables, bringing extra chairs, and helping everyone get comfortable. By the way, nobody tried to rip us off, despite Turkey's "reputation" for that. Though it’s still worth double-checking both the prices on the receipt and your change.
😋 What to try?
Testi Kebab (Pottery Kebab) – the region's main local dish. Meat and vegetables are cooked for several hours in a sealed clay pot, which is then spectacularly broken open right in front of the guests.
You should definitely try it – it is the culinary symbol of Cappadocia, after all. But to be honest, we weren't mind-blown. Basically, it’s just well-cooked meat and veggies inside. It's tasty, but we probably wouldn't order it a second time (though the presentation itself is memorable).
What you'll find both here and in other parts of Turkey:
⏺ Adana Kebab – minced meat kebab, usually quite fatty. Probably our most frequently ordered dish on the trip, usually served with potatoes and veggies. I should note we didn't have any digestion issues. By the way, kebab here is a general term for many traditional meat dishes.
⏺ Çökertme Kebab – layers of meat with crispy potatoes, yogurt, and tomato sauce.
⏺ Mercimek Çorbası – classic lentil soup, also available almost everywhere.
⏺ Gözleme flatbreads — a traditional dish in the form of a stuffed, folded flatbread. They come in both sweet and savory versions with a huge variety of fillings. You could call it local fast food since it's cooked everywhere, often on the streets. Super filling!
⏺ Turkish tea, coffee, halva/baklava/Turkish delight – I think these need no special description.
⏺ Kaymak deserves a special shout-out – a beloved local dairy product, like rich, thick clotted cream. So delicious, the main thing is knowing when to stop. 😅
💰 Examples of our bills.
📍Kapadokya Lezzet Sofrası (Avanos) – this is exactly where we tried the famous Testi Kebab; we can totally recommend the place. Bill – 5,090 liras for 6 people
📍Şedef Restaurant (Göreme) – we also loved the food and service, prices are a bit higher. Bill – 6,580 liras for 6 people
👉🏼 So, a full lunch or dinner with meat dishes, soups, and non-alcoholic drinks came out to about 850–1,100 liras per person.
Below, I'll leave a few more places in the area that we noted down from recommendations before the trip, just in case they come in handy for someone:
Seten Restaurant – a beautiful restaurant with a terrace and a view, more expensive than the previous two.
Topdeck Cave – a small family-run restaurant with great reviews.
Köfteci Ramiz Plus Göreme – a great option if you want something quick, tasty, and without the restaurant pretentiousness.
Oscar Steak House – just in case you crave a good steak (traditional restaurants mostly serve kebabs, but be prepared that steaks aren't cheap).
Soganli Kapadokya Restaurant – a family restaurant in the village of Soganli, in case you are exploring the surrounding area.
