Tucked away in the mountains of Huamachong Town, Chenxi County, Huaihua, lies a natural underground wonder—Yanzi Cave. It is a typical karst landform, located over 50 km from downtown Huaihua. It is a well-known provincial scenic spot and a popular destination for tourists looking to escape the heat and explore caves. The entire scenic area covers over 30 square kilometers and includes not only the cave but also attractions like Yixiantian (A Glimpse of the Sky), the High Gorge and Flat Lake, and Yishen Garden. It blends mountains, water, caves, and forests, offering both grandeur and tranquility. The core Yanzi Cave has 9 levels, with a total trail length of over 4,800 meters, 8 major cave halls, and hundreds of scenic spots. The highest cave hall reaches 120 meters; stepping inside, you will be instantly awestruck by its grandeur. The name "Yanzi Cave" (Swallow Cave) has a story behind it. Every spring and summer, thousands of swifts fly into the cave to nest. Flocks of swallows darting through the cave create a unique spectacle. Inside, stalactites, stalagmites, and stone curtains take on various shapes. Formed over hundreds of millions of years of geological evolution, they look like a dreamlike underground art palace under the lights. An underground river flows through the cave, with clear, icy water. The sound of trickling water echoes in the vast cavern. The cave stays cool in summer, making it a natural retreat to escape the heat. Beyond the breathtaking natural scenery, the area is steeped in folklore. Stories like the "Spirit Snake Turning into a Dragon" and "Lady Jiang Waiting for Her Husband" have been passed down through generations, adding a layer of romantic cultural color to the deep cave. The Miao ethnic customs in the surrounding villages also add a touch of local life to this landscape. The scenery changes with the seasons: azaleas bloom across the mountains in spring, trees are lush in summer, the scent of osmanthus fills the air in autumn, and occasional rime ice appears in winter. There is something different to see all year round. There are many ways to explore Yanzi Cave. You can walk along the trails through the cave to admire the various karst formations, visit the steep Yixiantian, or stroll by the High Gorge and Flat Lake to enjoy the mountain and lake views. For outdoor enthusiasts, there is also hiking in the mountains to experience the fresh air of the Western Hunan forests. Here are a few travel tips. The scenic area is located in a mountainous region, so driving is recommended. The mountain roads have many curves, so please drive slowly and carefully. The inside of the cave is cold and damp, so bring a light jacket even in the height of summer. The lighting inside is dim, so try to follow the designated tour route and do not enter undeveloped areas. After your visit, you can try some local farm-style dishes to experience authentic Western Hunan flavors. You don't need to travel far. At Chenxi Yanzi Cave, you can witness the wonders of nature and experience the vibrant local life of the Western Hunan mountains. Step into this underground wonderland, listen to the flowing water and legends, and feel the unique romance of Western Hunan.

We stayed at the Lopesan Costa Bavaro Resort, Spa & Casino - All Inclusive from August 22 to August 26. The property was stunning, exceptionally well maintained, and incredibly comfortable. Every staff member we met was professional, polite, and welcoming. The buffet—Atlantíco—offered some of the best food I've ever had at a buffet, with amazing selections. The à la carte restaurants were equally impressive. The pool area was exceptionally clean and well-maintained. As an early riser, I had a view of the pool area and witnessed firsthand how early the staff got up to clean the sizable pools. Staff members were constantly ensuring that the pools and seating areas were properly cleaned and arranged. The only small letdown was the seaweed in the ocean, which made it difficult to swim. Though staff worked diligently each morning to remove as much seaweed as possible, it was impossible to clear it all—likely due to the season. That said, while the beach wasn’t ideal for swimming, the pool was absolutely perfect!

Only when you drive up the hairpin turns of Bamianshan do you truly understand the power of the "Ridge of Western Hunan" — 1.5 hours of winding mountain roads that make you dizzy, but once you reach the 1400-meter plateau, you are instantly stunned by the "sky prairie" before your eyes: green grass stretching to the horizon, cattle and sheep scattered all over the hills. Shen Congwen’s description of a "different country" really wasn’t an exaggeration. Choosing the right mountain top guesthouse is key! Open the window to see the sea of clouds rolling by, awakened by the light at 5 a.m., the mist flows swiftly beneath your feet. No wonder this place is called the "oasis suspended in the air." Change into your sneakers and head to Swallow Cave, where four cave entrances are hidden in the greenery on the cliff. Inside the cave are kilns where bandits once made gunpowder. Touching the hand-carved characters feels like flipping through the script of the old movie "The Battle of Wulong Mountain." All the food is wild mountain flavor! The farmhouse restaurant’s stir-fried cured meat with bracken is so fragrant you’ll lick the plate clean. The smoky cured meat’s aroma hits your nose, and the bracken is so crispy it makes a sound when you bite. In the evening, enjoy barbecue skewers at the "Cloud Sea Beach." The owner says this flat meadow is actually a remnant of a glacier. Looking up, the Milky Way slowly spreads out, and the guide points to Scorpio while explaining the constellations. The wind carries the sweet aroma of roasted corn. On the second day, follow a Tujia brother along the ancient salt road, where horse caravan hoofprints remain on the stone steps. The natural bridge is amazing; beneath the stone arch is a deep pool, and looking up you can see a "pin"-shaped skylight. Sunlight pours down like scattered gold. Before descending, buy a jar of wild honey. The owner says it’s brewed from the "Fountain of Youth" water, so thick it can stretch into threads. A few practical tips: drive slowly and find wide spots to pass other cars; the ultraviolet rays at the summit are strong, so sunglasses and hats are a must; even in summer, bring a light jacket—eating hot pot in the mountain breeze at night feels cold without one. When leaving, look back and the mist is already creeping over the mountain peak again. There are no crowded tourists here, only the sound of wind passing through the meadow and the flickering campfire under the starry sky — this is the true "escape from the city."

Xikou Village in Huaihua is a hidden treasure nestled by the Yuan River. When the morning mist gently caresses the river, the entire village resembles an ink painting. Spanning 3,000 acres, lush forests and clear waters coexist, with the shimmering reservoir and ancient buildings’ flying eaves complementing each other. The Eastern Han Dynasty Fubo Temple and Tang Dynasty Wanfu Temple carry the charm of a thousand years of history. Strolling here, you can listen to Yang opera singing and savor the unique aroma of the intangible cultural heritage dish, Huokang fish. Come to Xikou Village to experience this tranquility and rustic charm, and appreciate the gentle allure of a millennium of time!

Pushi Ancient Town was once the most important of the four ancient towns in western Hunan, and was a major border town at the junction of Jishou and Huaihua. With the passage of time and the construction of road networks, the ancient town gradually declined. Today, the ancient town has a visitor center and a well-equipped parking lot, but the basic conditions are relatively weak, and there are not many well-preserved ancient buildings. Apart from a few attractions that require tickets, the rest are free to visit. However, the ancient town is more like a commercial street in a township than a scenic spot, with a very strong sense of life.

If you come to Pushi Ancient Town, you must visit Pushi Zui Inn. Even if you don't stay at the inn, you should have a meal here, try the delicious river fish, and taste the homemade Tujia bacon. The spacious and bright restaurant 🍴 can host banquets, the outdoor lawn can host weddings 🎎, and the homemade dragon boat can host long table banquets. It's truly unique! The "Pushi Zui" inscription in front of the gate 🚪 is a map of the streets of Pushi Ancient Town.
