On December 9, 1703, Emperor Kangxi returned to Beijing from his western tour and arrived in Cizhou. The local governor welcomed the emperor with a "Whole Lotus Banquet." After the banquet, Kangxi traveled about two miles north to the "Guanjia Pavilion," where he admired the willows and lotus flowers. Inspired, he personally shot arrows at the willows, hitting the target three times. The people admired him, and cheers erupted. In February the following year, Henan Governor Xu Chao wrote an inscription and erected a monument commemorating the event, building the Zhisheng Shenwu Archway, later renamed Sheliu Pavilion. Forty-six years after Emperor Kangxi stayed in Cizhou, on September 17, 1750, Emperor Qianlong toured south to Henan’s Songshan and passed through Cizhou. Remembering his ancestors' legacy, he composed a poem at Sheliu Pavilion: "Sheliu, the famous pavilion, majestic in spirit, shines through the ages on the sacred day. Who would let the Zhenguan era alone be praised, making the foundation bow in admiration? Never forgetting the dangers of the four seasons’ hunts, all lands united without ease. Diligently upholding martial spirit with steadfast heart, not daring to draw a bow before the pavilion." This grand and lofty poem reflects the extraordinary demeanor and royal style of Emperor Qianlong, further immortalizing the legendary stories of the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors with Cizhou. This road to the west, called the Imperial Road, stretched over ten miles from south to north during the Qing Dynasty, lined entirely with lotus flowers. Every summer, the lush lotus leaves and blooming flowers created a fairyland, earning the ancient Cizhou’s Eight Scenic Spots the name "Guanlu Lotus Breeze." Who would have thought that 300 years later, the Imperial Road would regain its glory thanks to the Imperial Garden. No need to go to Jiangnan to capture white walls, black tiles, small bridges, and flowing water. I entered the garden around 9 a.m., there were few people and the light was super soft. Right at the entrance, I was captivated by those round arch doors. Just standing anywhere, the ancient style vibe is instantly full-on📸 Walking further in, there’s a large lake area. The Nine-Bend Corridor is really great for photos. Walk slowly, look back with a smile, lean on the railing and daydream. No matter how you shoot, it’s full of atmosphere. The misty waves and painted bridge reflections on the water are stunning. It looks like a moving ink painting. In the middle, I also visited the Cizhou Kiln Museum. Looked at old porcelain and experienced the culture of Cizhou Kiln. Quiet and healing, the photos have a lot of charm. Finally, I climbed to a high spot to overlook the whole garden. White walls, gray tiles, green water, small bridges. Looking out at it all, I felt completely relaxed. If you get tired from walking, you can rest inside the park; the pace is super comfortable. The courtyard of the Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum in Cixian is exceptionally spacious. From the main gate to the exhibition hall, a long straight path leads forward. In the middle of the path stands a huge camel sculpture, its bronze-colored body holding its head high, as if gazing into the distance across the vast desert. Later, I learned that this camel image is taken from a Northern Dynasties terracotta camel in the museum's collection. Entering the exhibition hall, you are greeted by some inconspicuous small items: tile eaves, terracotta figurines, bronze bottles, and broken glazed bowls. They are neither large nor ostentatious, quietly displayed in glass cases, which makes them feel more intimate. Imagining over a thousand years ago, someone once drank water from this bowl, someone once took shelter from the rain under that tile eave, and life went on like that. Further inside are mostly items unearthed from Princess Ruru's tomb. Turning a corner, the view suddenly opens up. A whole wall of glass cases is filled with densely packed small terracotta figurines, neatly arranged like a silent army. Some stand, some kneel, some ride horses, layered and crowded together. The sight is overwhelming—they have stood silently like this for over a thousand years. The museum’s treasure is a golden crown ornament. Though small in size, it is exquisitely crafted. The crown is decorated with flying celestial beings, their ribbons fluttering as if moved by the wind. Nearby are several Byzantine gold coins, round and tiny, with inscriptions now blurred. These artifacts came from distant lands and rest beneath the loess soil of Cixian with a princess. In other individual display cases, terracotta warrior figurines have thick eyebrows and large eyes, clad in armor and holding swords. The shaman figures are even more peculiar, wearing pointed hats with expressions hard to read—neither clearly happy nor sad. Camels, horses, cattle, dogs, and pigs are displayed in sequence. There is a sow, plump and robust, with a litter of piglets nursing beneath her. Nearby is a ewe also in a nursing posture. The sow’s appearance clearly resembles a wild boar—with a long snout and stiff spine, quite different from the clumsy look of today’s domestic pigs. Finally, there is a 1:1 scale restored Northern Dynasties mural tomb from Wanzhang. Stepping inside, a chill runs through you. The four walls and the corridor are fully painted with figures, divine beasts, and ceremonial guards, arranged in grand rows, some holding banners, others wearing long swords, all with solemn and dignified expressions. The Yecheng Archaeological Museum and the Yecheng Museum are two separate locations. The Yecheng Archaeological Museum is free to visit and has two floors. The central exhibit on the first floor is the museum's prized possession: the Northern Qi Dynasty Pagoda. The first exhibition hall on the first floor showcases the finest Buddhist statues from the Northern Wei period. The original model for the color reconstruction I saw at the Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum is here. The second exhibition hall on the first floor displays Buddhist statues from the Eastern Wei period (a transitional period). Even within the relatively short history of the Eastern Wei Dynasty (just over a decade), there are numerous exquisite statues. The craftsmanship combines painting and sculpture. It reminds me of the paintings on the marble slabs unearthed in Pompeii. The white horse's muzzle is highly relief-like. The three lions supporting the pedestal are of Indian style. During this period, the Bodhisattva of Contemplation moved from back to front. The Maitreya statue made by a group of women was funded and commissioned by them. The pedestal features six divine kings, among whom the elephant king and the pig king spitting out a jewel are particularly unique; a small monkey hangs from a tree. The second floor houses the museum's highlights, showcasing Buddhist sculptures from the Northern Qi period. Many exquisite Buddhist sculptures in the Ye City style can be seen. The third exhibition hall features Northern Qi Buddhist sculptures (at their peak). Technically, it demonstrates masterful use of both round and openwork carving. The best part was that the museums were open until evening, which made it much easier to manage the tight schedule. Visiting the Yin Ruins and Handan City Museum at night was really enjoyable. Originally, I planned to see the Xiuding Temple Pagoda and Lingquan Temple Grottoes, and visit Yanshi for some historical exploration, but after touring the Beixiangtangshan Grottoes during peak season, all my enthusiasm vanished. After a nap, I was eager to return home and drove straight 700 kilometers back. Four days, not counting travel time, didn’t leave much actual sightseeing time, but I still managed to check in at the Yin Ruins Museum, Tianning Temple Wenfeng Pagoda, Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum, Yecheng Archaeological Museum, Handan City Museum, the Northern Qi tomb cluster of Gao Huan’s family, and the Xiangtangshan Grottoes. Time management was pretty good. Below is the extreme itinerary during the Chinese New Year period—intense and not recommended for casual travelers. On the first day of the lunar new year, I set off at 8 a.m., arrived in Anyang around 4 p.m., headed straight to the museum, ate some oracle bone script noodles inside, and stayed until closing. On the second day, I first went to Tianning Temple to see the Wenfeng Pagoda, which is larger at the top and smaller at the bottom, then headed north to visit the Northern Qi tomb cluster, Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum, and Yecheng Archaeological Museum, finishing the day with a visit to the Handan City Museum in the evening. The third day was a day trip to the Fengfeng mining area grottoes: first to South Xiangtang to see the coffered ceiling, then rented the Small Xiangtang grotto for a private visit, and finally to North Xiangtang. There was a scheduling mistake this day—North Xiangtang should have been visited in the morning because by 2 or 3 p.m. the crowds were overwhelming, which greatly reduced the experience. By the fourth day, I had lost all enthusiasm for sightseeing and went straight home.
