Kunming in late October is amazing! 3-day, 2-night trip for 900 per person, featuring both gulls and ginkgo trees

Ladies! Kunming in late October is absolutely incredible 😭 The advance guard of black-headed gulls has arrived. There are fewer crowds, plenty of gulls, and hotels are 30% cheaper! Save this comprehensive 3-day, 2-night guide. It covers Cuihu Park, Dianchi Lake, and the Stone Forest without any backtracking or tourist traps 👇 🌟 Why visit in late October? After the Frost's Descent, the "Spring City" is 20°C during the day and 9°C in the morning/evening, so a light jacket is enough~ Plenty of sunshine ☀️ The advance guard of black-headed gulls arrives half a month before the main flock, so you can feed them and take photos without the crowds! The ginkgo trees at Yuantong Temple are just starting to turn yellow, and the reeds on the south bank of Dianchi Lake are in bloom. Best of all, hotel prices are 30% cheaper than during the Spring Festival! What are you waiting for? 📍 Quick facts ✅ Suitable for: First-time visitors to Kunming / bird photography / family trips ✅ Recommended duration: 3 days, 2 nights | Low physical intensity, public transport + walking ✅ Average cost: 900–1,500 yuan (excluding round-trip transportation) 🗺️ 3-day itinerary breakdown Day 1: Cuihu Park gull route Morning: Cuihu Park (free, gulls are most active before 8 AM) -> Yunnan University old campus (free, the ginkgo avenue is stunning 🍂) Afternoon: Former Site of the Military Academy (free, remember to book in advance!) -> Yuantong Temple (6 yuan) Evening: Grab a late-night snack at Nanqiang Street! Book one day in advance via official channels ❌ Taking the bus to the south bank of Dianchi Lake -> 40-minute wait! Taking the subway and transferring to a shuttle or taking a taxi saves time ❌ A whole bag of gull food -> 10 yuan a bag is too much to feed! It's fresher and cheaper back in the city 💰 Cost breakdown Admission 286 yuan | Transport 2–10 yuan/trip | Accommodation 180–400 yuan/night | Dining 40–100 yuan/meal Total for 3 days: 900–1,500 yuan! 💡 Practical tips 🚇 Transport: For Cuihu, take Subway Line 2 to Chuanxingulou Station; there are direct city lines to Dianchi Haigeng 🏨 Accommodation: Stay near Cuihu for easy gull viewing, or in the Dianchi Resort Area for peace and quiet 👗 Clothing: Large temperature difference between day and night, bring a light jacket + long sleeves, and remember sunscreen as UV rays are strong! 📸 Photography: Morning light is best for shooting gulls at Cuihu; the hour before sunset at Dianchi is crystal clear and stunning 📱 Reservations: The Military Academy requires online booking and is closed on Mondays; there are discounts for booking Stone Forest tickets online 🙋 Finally, I want to ask everyone: The advance guard of black-headed gulls has arrived. Deep within the Stone Forest lies the most authentic Yi ethnic charm — traveler post in Shilin

Deep within the Stone Forest lies the most authentic Yi ethnic charm

Step into the Yi villages of the Stone Forest, where unique peaks and strange rocks surround scattered, earthy-yellow dwellings⛰️. The stone peaks stand like a forest, and the warmth of daily life is hidden amidst the landscape. This is the home of the Sani people, where ancient stories are carried on the breeze, passed down through generations among the karst rocks~ In the morning mist, a little girl walks along the stone-paved path, and the mountain sunrise paints the entire village in warm gold🌅 Stone paths wind through the village, with walls painted in bright, colorful Yi patterns, and hand-woven linen and colorful threads hanging under the eaves🎨. The fields beside the village stretch out in layers; as the wind blows through the crops, the distant stone peaks, standing silently for billions of years, guard this land in their myriad forms. Every corner is a painting, and every snapshot is a masterpiece of cultural photography📸 The local Sani people are talented singers and dancers. During the Torch Festival, bonfires light up the night🔥, the sound of the large three-stringed lute rings out, and people dance around the flames. Simple ethnic costumes and exquisite embroidery—every stitch holds the unique romance of the people~ Those brightly colored patterns are the epics the Sani people have written on their clothes💫 Landscape and culture blend here; the magnificent Stone Forest is no longer just scenery, but the homeland where the Yi people have lived for generations. The rocks are silent, the songs are long-lasting. Coming here, you can marvel at the wonders carved by nature, feel the rich and mellow Yi customs, and touch the vivid ethnic culture hidden in the mountains and fields🌿 Travel tips💡 ▫️The Stone Forest Scenic Area is open year-round. We recommend visiting in the morning, as the lighting is perfect for photos ▫️Stay at the Dilianya Boutique Hotel in Anning (1st Floor, Building A, Ninghu No. 1). It's right next to Ninghu Park. You can see the lake view when you open the window, and after visiting the Stone Forest, you can take a walk by the lake, which is very relaxing~ ▫️In the village, you can experience Yi embroidery and take photos in ethnic costumes. Remember to chat with the locals; you will hear many moving legends🎵

6-Day, 5-Night Yunnan Family Trip (Kunming, Dali, Lijiang) - Altitude Sickness Edition — traveler post in Shilin

6-Day, 5-Night Yunnan Family Trip (Kunming, Dali, Lijiang) - Altitude Sickness Edition

Embark on a slow-paced journey to the land of colorful clouds 🌿 I've always wanted to visit Yunnan to experience the vibrant life of the "Spring City" Kunming, the gentle beauty of Erhai Lake in Dali, and the laid-back vibe of Lijiang Old Town. This summer, it finally happened! Although we had to cut our trip short by a day in Lijiang because my child developed a low-grade fever from altitude sickness, travel doesn't always follow a perfect script. Leaving some things undone is part of the journey, and we'll save the rest of the scenery for our next visit ✨ DAY 1: First encounter with Kunming | Strolling through the vibrant Spring City Kunming (arrival by plane) Green Lake Park - Huanggong East Street - Kunming Old Town Accommodation: Kunming Kai Wah Plaza Hotel Lunch: Lao Dian Shanzhai (Chuncheng Road Branch) Dinner: Aishang Jun (Kunming Old Town Branch) DAY 2: In-depth Kunming | One-stop tour of landscapes and night views Stone Forest - Fuxian Lake - Dianchi Lake - Nanqiang Night Market - Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archway Lunch: Qiaoxiangyuan Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles (Stone Forest Branch) Dinner: Gala Restaurant (Nanqiang Street Branch) DAY 3: Hello Dali | First experience of the "Wind, Flowers, Snow, and Moon" Dali (arrival by high-speed train) Chongsheng Temple and the Three Pagodas - Panxi Village S-Bend - Dali Ancient City Accommodation: Dali Luchun Garden Hotel Lunch: Zuicangyu Zizhu Courtyard Restaurant Dinner: Dianxiaomei Bai Ethnic Stone Grill (Dali Wangfu Branch) DAY 4: Slow travel in Dali | Healing ancient towns + immersive experiences Shuanglang Ancient Town, Nanzhao Folklore Island - Puzhen Tie-Dye Museum (tie-dye experience) - Xizhou Ancient Town (Yi ethnic costume photoshoot) Lunch: PANPAN Sea View Restaurant DAY 5: Dali to Lijiang | Switching between romantic cityscapes Dali Road-E Theme Park - Ideal Bond - Chartered car to Lijiang Accommodation: Lijiang Shuhe Jellof Garden Hotel DAY 6: Wrapping up in Lijiang | Gentle ancient town and early departure Shuhe Ancient Town - Departure 💡 Tips for family travel and altitude sickness (personal experience) My child was perfectly fine and having a great time in Kunming and Dali. However, after arriving in Lijiang, they developed symptoms of altitude sickness, including a low-grade fever, lethargy, high heart rate, and low oxygen saturation. You must take it seriously if a child develops a fever at high altitude! We immediately went to the hospital for oxygen and ended our trip early. Although it was a bit disappointing, safety always comes first. Fortunately, the symptoms weren't too severe, and it was just like a cold after we got back. I suspect it was because they were too tired from playing or got too hot. Here are some friendly reminders to share with everyone: 1. The temperature difference between day and night in Yunnan is significant, so add or remove layers of clothing promptly to prevent colds. Also, use sun protection as the UV rays are strong ☀️ 2. After arriving at high-altitude areas, avoid running, jumping, or roughhousing, and get plenty of rest. 3. You don't need to wash your hair or shower every day, and if you do, dry your hair immediately. 4. If your child shows symptoms like a mild fever, dizziness, drowsiness, or lethargy, and you are worried, seek medical attention promptly. When traveling with kids, their health always comes first 🌿

Sleep under the stars: Stone Forest Changhu Lake hiking + lakeside camping plan — traveler post in Shilin

Sleep under the stars: Stone Forest Changhu Lake hiking + lakeside camping plan

Relaxing 2-day trip around Kunming | Complete travel guide to Stone Forest Changhu Lake Located in Weize Village, Changhu Town, Shilin, Changhu Lake is hidden among karst mountains. Also known as "Hidden Lake," it is the legendary hometown of Ashima. Unlike the bustling main Stone Forest scenic area, the lake here is clear and surrounded by pine forests, featuring karst peaks, highland lakes, and forest meadows. With few tourists, it is perfect for hiking around the lake, bamboo rafting, lakeside camping, and stargazing, while also offering a chance to experience the culture of the Yi Sani people. The two-day itinerary is relaxed, with daytime scenery and nighttime stargazing, suitable for photography enthusiasts, couples, and friends traveling from Kunming. Transportation Driving is the preferred option. From downtown Kunming, take the Kunming-Shilin Expressway. The trip takes about 1.5 hours. Navigate to "Stone Forest Changhu Scenic Area." There is a free parking lot at the entrance, but vehicles cannot enter the lake area. Large camping gear can be transported via the scenic area shuttle. Public transport: Take a bus from Kunming North Bus Station to Shilin County, transfer to a local bus to Changhu Town, and then take a taxi to the scenic area. For groups, carpooling is recommended for more flexibility. The trail around the lake is long, so comfortable hiking shoes are recommended. Two-day itinerary Day 1: Bamboo rafting on Changhu Lake, lakeside camping, and stargazing Depart Kunming at 8:30 AM, arrive at Changhu Scenic Area at 10:00 AM, and purchase tickets. Stroll along the lakeside trail and look for the rock peak that resembles Ashima's silhouette. For lunch, enjoy a picnic by the lake or visit a nearby Yi-style restaurant for local specialties. In the afternoon, rent a bamboo raft to drift on the lake, immersing yourself in the poetic scenery of karst peaks reflected in the clear water. Later, find a flat grassy area to set up your tent and take photos of the forest and lake panorama. Wait for the sunset in the evening, when the sun casts a warm glow on the rock peaks and the lake. After dark, if the weather is clear, you can watch the Milky Way. If you're lucky, you might be able to join local Sani people for a bonfire and "Da Sanxian" dance. Camp by the lake that night. Day 2: Morning mist, hiking, and return to Kunming At 6:30 AM, head to the lake to capture the beautiful morning mist, egrets flying over the water, and light beams through the pine forest. Hike the lakeside trail in the morning, visit the Dushi Mountain ruins, and climb to the top for a panoramic view of the entire lake. Pack up your camping gear and have breakfast. Spend the morning strolling through the forest, looking for wildflowers and hidden spots. Depart at 12:30 PM to return to Kunming, avoiding the afternoon traffic. Local specialties Farmhouses around Changhu Lake source ingredients from authorized suppliers and follow safe cooking practices. We recommend the Yi-style clear soup lake fish, which is tender and sweet; the Sani-style braised chicken is rich and flavorful; and the pan-fried milk curd is creamy and delicious, especially when paired with dipping sauce. Other specialties include potato rice, buckwheat cakes, and stir-fried alpine vegetables. For camping picnics, you can purchase bread, fruit, and dairy products. Compliant charcoal grilling is allowed in designated areas of the scenic area; open fires are strictly prohibited, and please take all trash with you. Estimated cost per person: CNY 410 Round-trip carpooling: CNY 90; Changhu Scenic Area ticket: CNY 10; tent rental (one night): CNY 120; bamboo raft experience: CNY 40; meals for two days: CNY 150. Students and seniors aged 60–69 can enjoy half-price tickets with valid ID; seniors over 70 are free. Shuttle buses, drinks, and snacks are optional and not mandatory. Bringing your own camping gear can save on tent rental fees. Travel tips The lake area is nearly 2,000 meters above sea level, and the temperature difference between day and night is significant, so be sure to bring a light jacket and a warm sleeping bag for camping. The UV rays on the plateau are strong, so take sun protection measures. Swimming and fishing in the lake are prohibited; please protect the lake's ecology. There are many mosquitoes in the forest in the morning, so bring mosquito repellent. Please set up camp only in designated grassy areas, do not trample vegetation, and practice "leave-no-trace" camping. For morning mist photography, arrive early when the light is soft, which is perfect for landscape photography. trip around Kunming Forest Changhu Lake of Ashima Lake stargazing camping niche lake travel

Minor Stone Forest - Ashima

Here, the sparse yet vibrant stone peaks are a highlight, the most striking being the Ashima Stone—a rock pillar resembling a beautiful maiden from Yi folklore. At dusk, when the colorful lights illuminate the landscape, the stone formations are bathed in a kaleidoscope of colors, creating a scene of breathtaking beauty! The lake reflects the stone shadows, the grasslands stretch endlessly, and the vegetation is abundant, the air so pure it feels like natural oxygen. Strolling through this area, the tranquility and mystery are captivating, as if stepping into a living garden painting. Note: It's recommended to visit in the evening for better photos under the lights; remember to wear comfortable shoes to explore the stone paths.

Naigu Stone Forest

Great park outside of Kunming. The stone structures are really amazing. The lakes around the stones are also great. Not too crowded and a very big place. Only problem was that we had trouble finding the entrance and where to buy bus tickets. Requires a lot of walking

Shilin Snow and Ocean Park

The kids love to play here, it's actually pretty good, but because it's an older ocean world, it's smaller in every way, but small doesn't mean bad, they have a lot of stuff, and the animals are well maintained. One thing to say is that their mermaid show is the most sincere among the current ocean worlds.

Mt. Jinping Scenic Resort

It's a worthwhile scenic spot to visit. Climbing the stairs up might be a bit tiring, so we took an electric cart. There was a guide on the cart explaining how to pay homage to Buddha, which was quite nice. The scenery on the mountain is also beautiful, and the air is very fresh. If you come a little later in the day, it won't be so sunny, making it quite suitable for hiking. The weather in Mile is really changeable; it was sunny when we went up, but cloudy when we came down. Shortly after we got on the cart, a strong wind and heavy rain started, so we were quite lucky.

Keyi Town And Ancient Village

From the entrance to the village, after exploring the village, we took a bus to Tiger Roaring Forest, then another bus to the exit, and finally visited Mizhi Wonderland. Since we weren't going back the way we came, we descended the mountain from another exit, and eventually took the sightseeing bus back to the exit. Although each section of the road wasn't long, there wasn't much scenery along the way, and it added up to several kilometers, but it was still worth it!

Shilin Xinglin Grand View Garden Scenic Area

After visiting Shilin, I came to Shilin Xinglin Grand View Garden, which is located at No. 1 Heilongtan Road, Farmers Entrepreneurship Park, Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Kunming City. It is not far from Shilin and smaller than Shilin. It has karst landform, beautiful mountains and rivers, and fresh air. It is a place that integrates traditional Chinese medicine health care, leisure tourism and vacation, as well as ecological agricultural sightseeing. There are Xinglin Zen Temple, Sakura Valley, hot springs, etc.
