The region's main points are located in different places, so an incorrect base can easily result in daily commuting. ❌ Zhangjiajie City Center for 5 Days At first glance, it seems logical: stay in the city and travel to the sights every day. But if your main destination is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, this isn't the most convenient option. The city itself is well-positioned for visiting Tianmen Mountain, and is also conveniently located due to its train station, airport, and urban infrastructure. But for a few days in the national park, it's more practical to stay closer to it. 📍 How to: Spend the night before or after Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie City, and make Wulingyuan your base. ❌ Hotel "near the national park" This statement when booking doesn't guarantee anything. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is vast and has several entrances. A hotel may indeed be located near the park, but far from the entrance you plan to start your hike through. Therefore, before paying, be sure to open a map and check: 📍 Which entrance is closest? 🚶 Is it really possible to walk there? 🚕 How long does it take to get there by car? 🚌 Where does the necessary transportation depart from? 500 meters to the park boundary and 500 meters to the park entrance are completely different. ❌ Grand Canyon as a base for the entire trip Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and the famous Glass Bridge are worth including in your itinerary, but they are located separately from the main routes of the national park. If the main purpose of your trip is a national park, Wulingyuan is a convenient base for most travelers. If you're planning on visiting Tianmen Mountain, it's convenient to spend one night in Zhangjiajie City itself. A simple rule applies here: First, plan your route → identify the entrances you need → only then choose a hotel. In Zhangjiajie, I wouldn't book accommodation based solely on "it's beautiful and close to the mountains." It’s easy to mess up your Zhangjiajie itinerary. On the map, it looks simple: the park is close, the mountain is nearby, and you can easily squeeze in the canyon. But once you're there, time slips away on shuttle buses, elevators, cable cars, lines, and the mountain trails themselves. That's why for a first trip, I highly recommend setting aside 5 days and not trying to cram everything in at once. 📍 Day 1: Tianmen Mountain Let's kick things off at Tianmen Mountain. Think cable cars, high-altitude cliff-hanging walkways, glass-bottomed skywalks, sweeping panoramas, and the famous Tianmen Cave, also known as "Heaven's Gate." It's best to take it easy and dedicate the better part of your day to the mountain. And a quick heads-up: Tianmen Mountain is completely separate from the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Don't even try to squeeze both into one jam-packed day. 📍 Day 2: Yuanjiajie + Tianzi Mountain We're dedicating our first full day to the National Forest Park. Head up to Yuanjiajie. This is exactly where you'll find those iconic vertical quartzite pillars that put Zhangjiajie on most people's bucket lists. Next, make your way toward Tianzi Mountain to keep taking in the park from above. The main goal today is simple: take your time. The weather and rolling clouds constantly shift the landscape, so it makes sense to linger at one viewpoint rather than rushing to check off five more. 📍 Day 3: Golden Whip Stream Now, let's switch up the perspective. After the bird's-eye panoramas, we're heading down to the Golden Whip Stream. Here, the trail winds through the forest right alongside the stream. Those giant stone peaks are no longer far beneath you—they're towering directly overhead. It gives you a completely different vibe of Zhangjiajie. If you still have the time and energy, you can tack on another section of the national park. But I wouldn't recommend trying to race through all the upper viewpoints again. 📍 Day 4: Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon On day four, we're heading to the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. The most famous spot here is, of course, the Glass Bridge suspended over the canyon. But going just for a photo on the bridge would be a waste: the real highlights are the canyon itself, the nature trails, the gorges, and the waterfalls. It's best to carve out at least half a day for this trip and avoid scheduling anything non-cancelable afterward. 📍 Day 5: No Heroics Today Yes, that's intentional. I'd leave the final day as a buffer. You can stroll around Wulingyuan, revisit your favorite part of the national park, spend a few hours in the city, or catch up on anything you might have missed. Having this kind of wiggle room is especially handy in Zhangjiajie. Up in the mountains, so much depends on the cloud cover, fog, and visibility. Rain in the Avatar Mountains is a totally normal occurrence. When we visited Zhangjiajie, it rained two out of our three days there, but that didn't stop us from having an incredible experience exploring the national park. In fact, rainy and misty weather can show off these mountains from a completely different perspective. The key is to plan your day right. 📹 Check the cameras first There's a WeChat mini-program where you can watch live streams from cameras set up at various spots across the national park. Before you head out, make sure to check it out to assess the actual conditions: the weather can vary wildly in different parts of this massive park. The app is called 张家界旅游 (Zhāngjiājiè Lǚyóu / "Zhangjiajie Tourism"). If you can barely see anything on the cameras due to thick fog and clouds, don't rush up the mountains just yet. Sometimes all you need is a little patience—mountain weather changes in a flash, and visibility can improve drastically in just a couple of hours. ⏰ Important: Park tickets are sold for specific time slots. If you decide to delay your arrival due to the weather and miss your time slot, you can exchange it at the national park's ticket office. 🌿 What if the weather never clears up? Then I highly recommend heading to the Golden Whip Stream and hiking the entire trail from the south entrance all the way to the bus stop at the end of the route. The trail runs right along the bottom of the gorge, surrounded by massive cliffs, lush forests, and a mountain river. It's one of those spots where rain doesn't ruin the vibe at all—instead, it makes the forest feel even more vibrant and mysterious. 🐒 You'll often spot monkeys along the way. They look cute, but it's best to keep your food and personal belongings close and definitely don't try to feed them. 🌫 Or maybe it's even more beautiful in the rain? On one of those rainy days, we finally managed to see the mountains from above—and honestly, that's when they left the biggest impression on me. Clouds drifted slowly between the peaks, individual summits appeared and vanished in the mist, and the mountains themselves looked like they were literally floating in mid-air. It's in this kind of weather that it's especially easy to see why these landscapes are constantly compared to Pandora from "Avatar". To me, if you had to picture the perfect scene to inspire the creation of such a sci-fi world, this is exactly what it would look like. ☔ So, should you visit the Avatar Mountains in the rain? Definitely—yes. Rain is absolutely no reason to cancel your trip to the Avatar Mountains. Just check the cameras, gauge the visibility, wait a bit if needed, or pick a trail that's better suited for the current weather.

📌 Most tourists make the same mistake: they only visit Zhangjiajie for 1-2 days. This is woefully inadequate. The main reason is that the famous Avatar Mountains are not located in Zhangjiajie itself, but in the small town of Wulingyuan, about 40 km from the city center. Therefore, my advice is to plan at least 4 days. Then you'll be able to see all the main sights without rushing. · -- 📅 Day 1. Wulingyuan and Yellow Dragon Cave 🚖 From Zhangjiajie, take a taxi directly to Wulingyuan. This is the best place to stay – choose a hotel near the East Entrance to the national park. After checking in, head to: 📍 Huanglong Cave (Yellow Dragon Cave) 💰 Ticket price: about $15. This is a huge karst cave with underground rivers, lakes, stalactites, and stalagmites. One of the most impressive sites in the region. In the evening, simply stroll through cozy Wulingyuan, have dinner, and go to bed early—tomorrow is the most exciting day. · -- 📅 Day 2. Zhangjiajie National Park - Avatar Mountains ⏰ Arrive at opening time. 🛂 Don't forget your passport. 🎫 It's best to buy tickets in advance on Trip.com. You can often also purchase them through the hotel management—they usually message tourists on WeChat. The park is huge inside. 🚌 Free buses run between all the observation decks. The route is circular. There are two options: ⬅️ Left – first take the famous Bailong Elevator, and then descend by cable car. ➡️ Right – the opposite. 💡 I recommend going left. The first ride up the glass elevator is much more impressive. All day you'll be moving between observation decks: 🚌 bus → 📸 observation deck → 🚌 bus → 🚶 walk → 🚌 next stop. This is where the very landscapes that inspired the creators of the film "Avatar" are located. · -- 📅 Day 3. Canyon and Glass Bridge If you didn't have time to see everything in the national park yesterday, don't worry. 🎫 The ticket is valid for 4 days, so you can easily return. If you've already explored the park, head to: 🌉 Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Many people come here for the famous glass bridge. 💡 But my advice: don't waste your time on it. It's better to go straight down to the canyon itself. The walk through the gorge, waterfalls, rivers, and suspension bridges leaves the most powerful impression. After the walk: 🚖 We drive back to Zhangjiajie. We check into the hotel and in the evening we go see: 🏮 72 Qilou (72奇楼) is a famous architectural complex. This is the tallest wooden structure on stilts in the world, which is especially beautiful after sunset. 💰 Before 4:00 PM, tickets are about $7; after 4:00 PM, they are about $15. · -- 📅 Day 4. Heaven's Gate Today we're heading to one of China's most famous landmarks. 📍 Tianmen Mountain 🎫 It's best to buy tickets in advance. There are several routes. There used to be routes A, B, and C, but now only A and B are usually available. The only difference between them is the order: 🚠 Either the cable car first, then the buses; 🚌 or vice versa. So, let's get back down to earth—literally and figuratively. I've been droning on about floating rocks, but now let's be honest. Without understanding how tickets work, where to find food, and how to avoid getting lost on the routes, a trip can easily turn into an expensive quest with a dash of despair. Let's start with the ticket, because that's where the first trap lies. The main entrance ticket to the forest park is valid for several days—usually about four. It sounds generous, and it's truly convenient: you can't physically cover this gigantic territory in one day. But there's a catch: the ticket is linked to your biometric data. At the entrance, they scan your face or fingerprint, and that's how you get in everywhere. I naively thought I could just wave a piece of paper—and ended up getting stuck at the turnstile while the employee gestured for my face. Keep in mind: if you plan to visit for several days, keep your passport handy; entrance is by name. Internal transportation is a whole other story. Many people think they just buy a ticket and that's it, wandering from one beauty to another. But in fact, the park is so vast that free ecobuses, paid cable cars, and the very same Bailong Lift run between key points. Here's my second mistake: I didn't look at the map beforehand and spent half a day trying to figure out which bus goes where. There are few signs in English, and my knowledge of Chinese ends in "nihao." My phone's translator and kind locals who pointed in the right direction saved me. Now about the sacred—food. Let me dispel that illusion right away: don't count on cheap street food inside the park. Prices inside the park are significantly higher than in the city; this is typical of any well-known natural area around the world. There are kiosks selling instant noodles, boiled corn, kebabs, and drinks near the observation decks. It's edible and helps stave off hunger pangs, but if you're looking for the romance of authentic cuisine, this isn't the place to go. My life hack is simple: I bring water and snacks from the city, and buy hot meals once I'm there, so I don't have to lug extra weight up the stairs. Link your card to these apps in advance, while you're still at home. As promised, we're exploring Zhangjiajie in detail. The area is vast, and without understanding its structure, it's easy to waste half a day on the road and get exhausted before you reach the most beautiful parts. First, the main thing: this is NOT just one park. Many people think they're going to "one park," but here there are several separate zones in different locations. Squeezing everything into one day is physically impossible. · National Forest Park (Wulingyuan Zone) - those same floating mountains. · Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate) - separate, near the city. · The Grand Canyon with its glass bridge - also a separate location. 1. Forest Park (Wulingyuan) The heart of it all. This is where the stone pillars from "Avatar" are located. · Tianzi Mountain - views of the columnar rocks. · Yuanjiajie - the very same "Avatar Mountain." · Bailong Elevator – a glass elevator right in the cliff face, the views are breathtaking. · Golden Whip Stream – a route along the bottom, along the water between the cliffs. Everything is well thought out inside: free eco-buses, cable cars, and an elevator. The ticket is valid for several days, so you can come back multiple times. My route: up by cable car or elevator, along the top by buses, and down by foot via the Golden Whip. This way you'll see both the top and the bottom. 2. Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate) A separate trip, but not to be missed. · One of the longest cable cars – you ride high above the city and the serpentine roads. · The road with 99 turns is a sight in itself. · Heaven's Gate – an arch in the cliff face, reached by a staircase of 999 steps. Yes, I almost counted them. · The glass path along the edge of the cliff is not for those afraid of heights. Catch: there's a lot of climbing. Don't plan anything else active for the same day. 3. Grand Canyon and the Glass Bridge · The glass bridge over the abyss is the most adrenaline-pumping experience. · The canyon itself is a beautiful route down along the cliffs and water. Important: the bridge often requires a timed ticket, and the number of people allowed is limited. Buy it in advance. How not to get lost · Download a park map in advance and understand the buses and cable cars. · Take photos of the signs with schedules and stops—they'll come in handy when finding your way back. · Remember where you came from: there are several entry and exit points. · Keep your ticket handy—they check at the entrances to different areas. Catch: Popular viewpoints are crowded. It's difficult to get a photo without other people's heads in. • The best views are often a little off to the side, where not everyone gets to. Go further away from the crowds—it's more beautiful and quiet there. · Fog is a gamble. The platform can be drowning in milk. Come back another day (you've got a multi-ticket!). · Morning is everything. By lunchtime, the buses are packed, and it's impossible to squeeze through. Heading to Zhangjiajie? I'm sharing an itinerary with all the highlights and what you need to know before your trip. 。 Zhangjiajie isn't just one park. There are at least three stunning locations near the city: · Tianmen Mountain with Heaven's Gate Cave. You can ascend directly from the city by cable car. · Zhangjiajie National Park with its floating cliffs. The drive from the city takes about 30 minutes. · The Grand Canyon with its glass bridge. The drive from Wulingyuan takes about 30 minutes, and from the city, about 70 minutes. These are vast natural areas, and it's worth setting aside at least a full day for each. Tickets for the national park are even sold for three days at a time. For a little respite from the mountains and long walks, you can visit the atmospheric historical towns of Fenghuang and Furong nearby. 。 If you want to see all the main sights, I recommend planning at least 5 days for your trip. In 1-2 days, you'll only be able to explore a couple of locations at a very fast pace. There's also the risk of getting caught in bad weather and seeing only fog 🙈. 。 Below, I'll share an itinerary for exploring the beauty of Zhangjiajie: Day 1. Tianmen Mountain and 72 Wonder Towers 🏨 We checked into the Hampton by Hilton, Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain. We had a late flight to Zhangjiajie the day before, so we headed up the mountain right after breakfast. 🏔️ Around 9:30 AM, we set off for Tianmen Mountain. Despite being caught in fog on the mountain itself, the hike took about 6 hours. The longest section of the cable car was closed for repairs, so we chose Route B: ascending by express cable car (you need to take a bus or taxi from the hotel to get to it), descending by bus, and then taking the Tianmenshan Cable Car directly to the hotel. We climbed the 999 steps to Heaven's Gate Cave, walked the eastern route, crossed the glass bridge, reached the temple, and rode the open cable car across the center of the mountain, and then returned. 🥘 ~5:00 PM Lunch in town After the restaurant, we head to the hotel to change and refresh. 🏮 ~7:30 PM Heading to 72 Wonder Towers, an atmospheric complex with traditional architecture and vibrant evening illumination. Day 2. Overnight Trip to Fenghuang 🚆 Breakfast and check out of the hotel. ~11:30 AM Depart for Fenghuang. The train ride takes about 50 minutes. 🏨 We check into the Fenghuang Yunqiao Free River View Boutique Homestay (Fenghuang Ancient City Yunqiao Branch). 🥘 Around 2:00 PM, we have lunch at a restaurant in the building next door to the hotel. 🪭 We go for a walk. Fenghuang is a landmark in itself. It is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric cities in China. The appearance of the old town has remained virtually unchanged since the 18th century: stone bridges, narrow streets, ancient embankments, and the famous wooden houses on stilts lined up along the Tuojiang River. 🛶 Around 7:00 PM, after dark, we depart from Shawan Wharf for a river cruise and light show. 🏮 Around 8:00 PM, after the river cruise, we ascend to Nanhuashan Hill to enjoy the evening views of the city from above. Day 3. Return to Zhangjiajie and head to the national park. 🍳 ~9:00 Breakfast: delicious croissants at the cafe next to the Nabian Nacheng Art Store. 🚆 Check out of the hotel and take the train back to Zhangjiajie at ~11:30. 🏨 ~13:00 Check in at the Valley Love Holiday Home (Zhangjiajie Forest Park Zhongmen Ticket Station Store), near the Zimugang entrance to Zhangjiajie Park. A hotel transfer will meet you at the train station. After booking, they contact you via trip, confirm your arrival time at the train station/airport, and arrange a transfer. 🫶 🥘 ~1:30 PM Lunch at the hotel restaurant. ⛰️ ~2:00 PM We go for a walk in the western part of the park: take the cable car up, hike up Tianzishan Mountain, and descend to the Shili Hualang mini train. Day 4. Full-day walk in Zhangjiajie Park. 🍳 ~9:00 AM Breakfast at the hotel. ⛰️ ~9:30 AM We go for a long walk in the park. We start by taking the Bailong Elevator. Walk to the bus stop at Bailong Elevator Station and take the bus to the Enchanting Stop. We'll hike along the Enchanting-Heaven Pillar-Greatest Natural Bridge-Tianqiao Stop route. From Tiantiao Station (天桥车站), take a bus to the Yangjiajie Cable Car's upper station. We'll then take the cable car back down. We'll take the bus to Longfengan Station (龙风俺) and enjoy a scenic walk. We'll then take a bus to the Huangshizhai Cable Car's lower station (黄石寨). We'll climb up and go for a walk. You can choose a short or long circular route. According to the map, the short route takes 60 minutes, while the long route takes 180 minutes. After the walk, we'll take the cable car back down. From the Huangshizhai Cable Car's lower station, we'll take a bus to the park's southern exit, and then a taxi to the hotel. At a comfortable pace, this walk takes me about 6.5 hours. Even though it seems like a lot of bus travel, my iPhone showed that I climbed 99 floors that day. 🙈 I've left the route on the map in the last photo. Day 5. Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge 🍳 ~8:30 Breakfast at the hotel 🏞️ ~9:00 We take a taxi to the Grand Canyon. The journey takes about 40 minutes. We walk across the bridge and then take a scenic boat ride through the canyon itself. We hiked for eight hours on the first day (the upper route from Wulingyuan Village) and the second day (the lower route via the "Golden Whip"). The routes are very impressive and beautiful, all the trails are well-maintained, and there are places to eat and rest. We purchased a ticket through reception for 488 yuan for four days (the price includes the Bailong Lift, cable cars, and buses). Day 1 🛫From Beijing, we depart for Zhangjiajie. Check into our hotel. 🏔️Day 2 In the morning, we take the longest cable car in the world to Tianmen Park. We stroll through the park and descend the 999 steps. At the foot of the Gate of Heaven, there are vending machines where you can take a newspaper-style photo with the steps in the background. We spent 5 hours in the park on Route A and then headed back to the hotel to rest and have lunch.😎 Day 3 Early in the morning, we set off for the village of Wulingyuan, where we'll see the Avatar Mountains! We took a regular taxi to Wulingyuan, just 40 km. We checked into our hotel and then headed straight to the park.😂 We bought tickets on trip.com. We chose Route B. We also bought elevator tickets separately. I recommend getting in the elevator first, otherwise you'll be staring at the backs of people's heads. 😂 ✅They take great drone videos near the famous peaks for 200 yuan. We spent about 6 hours in the park, walking around the entire length, which I'll tell you about separately. 😉 Day 4 ✅Glass Bridge and Flight to Shanghai. At 12:00, we headed to the glass bridge. We also took a taxi to the bridge without any problems. The bridge is small, but breathtaking. 😂 The ticket included a zipline. The line was short, and we got through quickly. Children are also allowed, but they weigh at least 30 kg. We spent about 4 hours in the park and headed back to the hotel and onto the flight to Shanghai. Day 5 First day in Shanghai. A classic itinerary for the first day in a new city: · the most popular observation deck, the Oriental Pearl. · Disney Store. It's so cool, you can touch and play with all the toys, it's a paradise for kids and adults alike🤣 · We visited the Xintiandi French Quarter. Be sure to take photos at the intersection near the corner building. I recommend taking the metro, there's no traffic. Day 6 We found a great history museum, quickly bought tickets, and off we went. Very interesting, huge 🦕, some of them move and make sounds🤣 After the museum, we went looking for lunch and accidentally found a huge Starbucks. A coffee lover's paradise. Excellent coffee and fresh pastries guaranteed! In the evening, we went to M&M's, where they print photos on candies. The store is huge, two floors, with a huge selection of candies that you can choose and pour into a jar. Very cool😉 Day 7 We went to Shanghai Disneyland. We also bought tickets in advance on trip.com. Disneyland is small; we walked around, took a ride, and saw the evening show. We spent one day there. I recommend reserving seats for the parade and evening show in advance.

In July, I was driven to Zhangjiajie by the steamy weather in the south, and ended up staying in a natural air-conditioned room at 23°C 🌬️ I originally thought Zhangjiajie only had the crowded Golden Whip Stream, but I unexpectedly discovered three less crowded, stunningly scenic secret summer escape routes, all shaded by trees, so I didn’t even need sunscreen! 🧊 First stop: Qixing Mountain — 23°C cloud-level cool cabin Really! Stop just lining up at Tianmen Mountain! Qixing Mountain is the true summer cooling highlight of Zhangjiajie! With an average altitude of 1400 meters and 87% forest coverage, the highest summer temperature is only 23 degrees. Standing on the summit, the breeze gives you goosebumps — the cold kind! I took the cable car up, and the moment the cabin emerged from the clouds, I was wowed — beneath me was a sea of rolling clouds, and in the distance, karst peaks floated above the clouds like scenes from a fantasy drama. There’s a glass skywalk suspended at the top, and walking on it feels like floating on clouds because the whole area is wrapped in mist. The best part! Very few people! I spent three hours on the summit and met fewer than 20 tourists, so no need to fight for photo spots. There’s also a primitive forest trail with centuries-old trees, where sunlight filters through the leaves creating a Tyndall effect, and the air is full of negative ions — a deep breath feels like your lungs are being cleansed. 💡 Insider tips: · Definitely bring a light jacket! Zhangjiajie Earth Crack stays at a constant 19 degrees! It’s a bone-chilling coolness, way more comfortable than air conditioning. The Earth Crack was carved by billions of years of flowing water. The narrowest part is only one meter wide, with cliffs hundreds of meters high on both sides, and you can only see a sliver of sky above. You won’t get any sun inside; there’s a babbling stream underfoot and dripping stalactites overhead. Occasionally, water droplets fall on your neck, making you pull it back — it’s so refreshing! I walked through the crack for about an hour and a half. The path is mostly flat with a few steps, so it’s not physically demanding. There are several shallow pools where you can step into the water, which is crystal clear and ice-cold — it makes you scream, but after a while, your whole body feels cool. 💡 Insider tips: · Wear non-slip shoes! It's just a stone's throw from the entrance, with all the necessary infrastructure nearby. 🏨 Yuxi Homestay We booked the most expensive panoramic room in this budget-friendly hotel for 465 RMB—and didn't regret it for a second. When visiting Zhangjiajie, most people only know about Wulingyuan and Tianmen Mountain, and the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is often overlooked. But if you’re not afraid of heights, it’s worth dedicating a whole day here. While waiting at the bridge entrance, a man repeatedly asked the staff, “How thick is this glass?” The staff replied, “Three layers of tempered laminated glass, each 12 millimeters thick, totaling 36 millimeters.” The man then asked, “How much weight can it hold?” The staff said, “Eight hundred tons.” He took a deep breath but still didn’t step forward. People behind him started urging him on, and only then did he edge along the side and walk onto the bridge. The moment I stepped onto the glass, I could feel its hardness underfoot. The bridge was transparent in my view, and the 300-meter-deep canyon below was fully exposed beneath my feet. The tops of the trees looked both near and far. I took a step, then paused, hearing the wind whistling through the bridge continuously. When I looked down, sunlight reflected off the glass, making it hard to see the depth clearly—only blurry treetops and exposed rock faces were visible. Visitors on the bridge fell into two types: those who strode forward with arms wide open, and those who clung to the railing, moving step by step. A young man squatted down after a few steps, too scared to move further. Other visitors passed by without urging him on. A child lay on the glass looking down and asked his mother, “Are there dinosaurs below?” Before she could answer, an adult nearby pulled him up and moved him forward. After crossing the bridge, continue walking down the canyon along the trail to the bottom. It’s cool in the canyon, with trees shading most of the sun. Looking back from the bottom, the glass bridge is 300 meters above, like a transparent line stretching between two mountains. People on the bridge appear as tiny shadows from that distance. It takes about 40 minutes by car from Zhangjiajie city to the Grand Canyon Scenic Area entrance, costing around 30 yuan. The glass bridge ticket is 219 yuan, including access to the bridge and canyon hiking. You can book online two days in advance and enter by scanning your ID, which is much faster than buying tickets on-site. No items are allowed on the bridge; cameras, backpacks, and water bottles must be stored in free lockers at the bridge entrance. After crossing, the path goes downhill all the way. If your knees aren’t strong, walk slowly. Midway, there’s a boat ride back for 20 yuan per person, saving a lot of energy and time. In June, daytime temperatures in Zhangjiajie are around 28°C, but inside the canyon it’s several degrees cooler. Wearing a short-sleeve shirt with a light jacket is enough to block wind and sun. The night I stayed near the scenic area entrance, my guesthouse balcony had a perfect view of the glass bridge. Around 7 p.m., before it was completely dark, the bridge lights were already on, looking like a pale blue light strip floating in the air, connecting two mountains. The lights stay on until about 9:30 p.m. If you want to see the lights, it’s best to arrive at the guesthouse before 6:30 p.m., settle in, and watch from the balcony as the sky darkens and the bridge lights gradually come on. I had checked ticket prices, transportation, and accommodation beforehand, but seeing the evening lights slowly illuminate the glass bridge made all the preparation worthwhile.

If you still have energy, check out the 72 Wonder Tower: it lights up incredibly beautifully. You can buy an entrance ticket to watch the show inside. · -- 📅 Day 4. Tianmen Mountain Dedicate exactly one day for this — it's more than enough. There are different routes, but you basically see the same things just in a different order. Most importantly, don't miss the famous 99-Bend Road and Heaven's Gate 🚪🌥️ · -- 📅 Day 5. Furong Ancient Town Hop on a train at the station, and in 20 minutes you're in the ancient village of Furong. Buy tickets, stroll through the center, admire the waterfall during the day, and most importantly — wait for the evening. 🌙 Once it gets dark and everything lights up, the real magic begins. I suggest grabbing a spot early: either at the viewing platform or a cafe with a view. Afterward, you can catch a show and head back to your hotel. · -- 💡 My advice: if you can spare more days — do it! That way you'll have time for everything at a relaxed pace without rushing.
