Coromandel travel guide and discussion

Very nice scenery and a must visit place if you are visiting New Zealand

Another name is call Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve is 181 km from Auckland. Places to visit included Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove Walk and etc. I came mainly for this 2 places, Hot water beach, the Coromandel. It a heated mineral water from the sand, you come here before low tide can check on the website, then dig a hole to become your own spa pool. Driving here see a lot of beautiful scenery, my accommodation is Hot water beach top 10 holiday park, is a walking distance to the beach, nice chalet with parking lot beside.

A picturesque peninsula on New Zealands north island. Attractions - Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove Spent a quick long weekend driving around this amazing area. Such beautiful scenery. #gooutside

Where else in the world can you head down to the ocean edge with a shovel and dig your own steaming hot spring pool right in the sand? Two hours either side of low tide, geothermal heat bubbling up from deep within the earth rises to the surface of Hot Water Beach. You can plan your entire Coromandel itinerary around the low-tide window, bringing a rental spade and bucket, or roll up spontaneously, rent a shovel from a beachside cafe, and join the friendly community of travelers digging thermal pits side-by-side. #planitorwingit

Cathedral Cove is one of New Zealand's most celebrated coastal landmarks, famous for its naturally carved, soaring limestone archway connecting two pristine white sand beaches. Gazing out through the massive tunnel framing the crystal-clear ocean and offshore rock stacks feels straight out of a fantasy film. Whether you carefully time your visit around low tide to walk through the arch easily or make an early-morning trek down the coastal trail to catch sunrise without the crowds, standing on this sun-drenched shore is pure coastal bliss. #planitorwingit

If you are heading to the Coromandel in New Zealand you can’t miss cooks beach, one of the most famous tourists spots in the area. It is a gorgeous sandy beach with calm and clear water for swimming, and lots of places to hike and explore. One of those hikes takes you to the famous Shakespeare’s cliff lookout point, which gives you 180 degree views of the Coromandel, cooks beach and the ocean. It is a very easy hike up a path through the Forrest that starts on the very edge of the beach, you can follow the signposts. There are fields along the way that are perfect for a picnic and the peak of the cliff has some seating, public toilets and some information about the history of this area. You can then follow the path down the other side of the cliff to smaller more rockier beaches that are good for exploring and rock pooling - it also has a nice little stream you can swim in or paddle your feet in to cool down. #newzealand #northisland #cooksbeach #coromandel #nature #beach #seascapes #thingstodo #trip #travel #travel2026 #mothernature #wonder

New Zealand has entered summer, the best season to start underwater exploration. From the North Island to the South Island, diverse marine ecosystems create four distinct diving destinations, where every dive is a dual adventure for the eyes and soul. [Purnice Islands] Located east of the Tutukaka Coast, the Purnice Islands were formed by ancient volcanic activity and are filled with underwater arches, caves, and rock formations. Light and shadow interplay in the blue waters, with Rikuriko Cave, one of the world's largest sea caves, echoing with a majestic low hum. Warm currents bring subtropical species such as spotted black snapper, leafy sea eels, and coral trout, while schools of rays can be seen in winter. Suitable for beginner divers to experience shallow reefs, it also attracts advanced enthusiasts to navigate complex cave systems. Day trips based in Tutukaka include two dives and surface leisure activities, while multi-day trips connect Island Bay and Cape Reinga for a deeper experience of the North Island’s coastal charm. [Coromandel Peninsula] The shallow bays and white sands of Coromandel nurture seaweed forests where sunlight reaches the seabed, allowing snorkelers to encounter schools of fish and shimmering sand beds. The marine protected area around Cathedral Cove is ecologically intact with calm currents, making it an ideal choice for beginners’ first dives. Routes departing from Whitianga cover multiple areas including the Mercury Islands, adapting flexibly to weather changes. Families can dig natural hot springs at Hot Water Beach or take a railway trip into the rainforest, blending diving with a relaxing coastal holiday rhythm. [Kaikoura] Kaikoura on the South Island features steep nearshore canyons where deep-sea nutrients support rich wildlife ecosystems. Underwater rock walls drop vertically, with seaweed forests and dusky dolphins often approaching humans to play and swim alongside. Though lacking tropical colors, it offers unique sights such as year-round sperm whale habitats and the dance of sea lions and seabirds. Some diving experience is required to handle the cold water environment. It is recommended to combine diving with whale watching and savor local lobster cuisine to fully experience the vitality of this cold marine area. [Milford Sound] A freshwater layer formed by rainfall filters light, allowing deep-sea black corals to grow at just eight meters deep, creating a rare shallow black coral forest globally, with some specimens living over 300 years. This site is exclusive to advanced divers, requiring an advanced open water certification and over 50 dives, participating in professional multi-day liveaboard trips. Between dives, you can relax on deck, fish, or take short hikes, immersing yourself in the pristine tranquility of the fjord. You can also take cruises or kayak on the surface to appreciate the magnificent views of snow-capped waterfalls and lush green cliffs. Diving in New Zealand is suitable year-round, with overall better conditions from November to April. Many locations offer internationally certified courses such as PADI to help you safely start or advance your skills. Whether you are a first-timer or an experienced diver, this mixed-ecosystem sea always has a spot waiting for you to discover beneath the waves.

Hidden Gem! Travel Through the Forests and Railways of New Zealand On the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand, there is a hidden gem that you cannot miss - Driving Creek Railway. This train will take you on a magical journey full of natural wildness. Its birth is due to the persistence of potter Barry Brickell. In 1970, he settled down on this undulating, forest-covered land to make pottery. The transportation problem gave birth to this narrow-gauge railway. Who would have thought that it would extend from a private transportation line to a dreamlike sightseeing route? Taking the train is like starting an adventure through the forest. The wheels collide with the tracks, making a crisp sound, and together with the birdsong, they play a symphony of nature. Outside the window is endless greenery, and the trees in the primeval forest grow wantonly, with branches and leaves swaying in the breeze. Occasionally, you can catch a glimpse of birds, living freely in this habitat. In the distance, the blue sea comes into view, contrasting with the green mountains and forests, bringing a strong visual impact. The whole journey takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, and every minute is wonderful. Buy tickets in advance on the official website, $52 for adults, $28 for children aged 4-16, and free for children under 4. There are many trains, basically every hour, making it very convenient to travel. Driving Creek Railway is not just a railway, but a poem that integrates nature and humanity. Come here to check in, leave an unforgettable travel memory between the mountains and railways, and feel the unique charm of New Zealand.
