【Painted Rocks】 ~A recommended photo spot for those who want to relax while enjoying the river breeze~ During my solo trip to Lisbon, I discovered some mysterious and colorful rocks! ✨ The place where I found them is "Av. Ribeira das Naus," which stretches from Praça do Comércio to Cais do Sodré Station. This is the site of a historic shipyard where ships were built and repaired during the Age of Discovery, and it's now a beautiful waterside promenade! I visited around 2 PM, and the pleasant river breeze and the sound of the waves were truly soothing. 🌊✨ The view was so vast that the opposite bank was visible in the distance, and it wasn't crowded, allowing me to enjoy a relaxing time away from the crowds. Actually, I'm a huge fan of Studio Ghibli's "Kiki's Delivery Service," and the cityscape of Lisbon and the atmosphere of this waterside area are exactly like the world depicted in the film…! [Plaza do Comércio (Comércio Square)] ~An absolute must-see for Lisbon sightseeing! A spacious square filled with history and breathtaking views~ I finally visited Praza do Comércio, a place I'd wanted to see during my solo trip to Lisbon! This place, whose name means "Trade Square" in Japanese, is one of the largest squares in Europe, with the Tagus River stretching out before it. I was overwhelmed by the vast grounds, the yellow buildings standing out against the blue sky, and the imposing presence of the "Arch of Triumph on Augusta Avenue"...✨ I visited just before 2 PM on a weekday, and it wasn't crowded at all; time seemed to flow very peacefully. ☺️ I went out to the beach along the river to feel the breeze, or sat on a bench and admired the view... It's the perfect place to unwind and recover from some of the fatigue of traveling. Spending time there while gazing at the spectacular view was truly luxurious. The day I went, preparations for a football event were underway, and I have fond memories of experiencing the lively atmosphere that was different from usual 🏈 I'm so envious that the event was held in such a fantastic location right by the sea…! Incidentally, the street in front of the square (Av. Ribeira das Naus) was lined with cute shops and stalls, and just walking around was exciting ♪ I went at lunchtime, but apparently this is also a very famous spot for watching beautiful sunsets 🌅 Next time, I definitely want to visit in the evening and take pictures of the arch with the sunset in the background! Benagil is made to be seen from the water. 🌊 Hidden along Portugal’s Algarve coast, Benagil Cave is famous for its enormous natural opening in the roof, golden limestone walls and small beach tucked inside the cave. When sunlight comes through the opening and reflects on the water, the whole place feels almost unreal. ✨ 🛶 HOW TO EXPERIENCE BENAGIL The coastline around Benagil is best explored from the sea. Depending on current local rules and conditions, guided kayak and SUP tours can take you along the cliffs and into the cave area, while boat tours offer another easy way to see the coastline. And don’t just stop at the cave. Before going, I was secretly skeptical, thinking, "Maybe it only looks pink because of photo filters..." (lol), but I was totally amazed when I got there!! It was actually painted in a vibrant, bold pink, and my excitement instantly shot up! The street paint was so well-maintained that I couldn't help but wonder to myself, "Do they repaint this all the time...?" 🤣 Looking up, the contrast between the retro streetscape, the colorful rainbow umbrellas, and the blue sky is absolutely stunning—every angle is picture-perfect ☂️✨ Those rainbow umbrellas are not just for snapping cute photos; they also do a great job of blocking out the harsh sun. Talk about killing two birds with one stone 🤭 ★ Recommended Route 💡 I walked through here on my way to the waterfront after checking out the "Bica Funicular" (Elevador da Bica)! I highly recommend this route because it's a "downhill" stroll, making it super easy on the legs 👍 If you come from the opposite direction, you'll be walking up a steep hill which can be quite a workout, so I hope this tip helps! I thought to myself, "I definitely have to see them when I visit Lisbon!" and the place I couldn't wait to check out was the Largo do Calhariz stop on the Bica Funicular (Ascensor da Bica)✨✨ Known as the City of Seven Hills, Lisbon is full of steep slopes and charming staircases waiting to be discovered as you stroll around. When I reached the top of the hill (Bica - Lg. Calhariz), there it was—the yellow funicular I'd always dreamed of seeing, parked right there! The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, and you can even see the beautiful water (the Tagus River) in the distance, leaving me completely spellbound... It's the ultimate photo spot📸♪ Actually, I had just rewatched Studio Ghibli's "Kiki's Delivery Service" right before coming to Lisbon. The vibe here, with its endless orange rooftops and winding slopes, feels so similar that I couldn't stop geeking out just by walking through the streets🧹🐈⬛ The Bica Funicular is currently out of service (*resumption date TBD), so I couldn't actually ride it. However, this meant I could take my time admiring the carriage and snapping photos on a quiet street, which made me more than happy! 【Mercado do Bolhão】 〜Unique Portuguese souvenirs that will make you want to buy everything!!〜 During my solo trip to Porto, Portugal, I visited the Mercado do Bolhão ☺️ This market is a cultural heritage site, featuring a wide variety of food stalls and souvenir shops across the 1st floor, 2nd floor, and even outside the building. This time, I skipped the fresh produce and explored the other shops in search of souvenirs! I went around 10:00 AM on a weekday, and since it wasn't overly crowded, I was able to take my time looking around. There were so many souvenirs, including bowls and magnets featuring Portugal's famous blue azulejo tile motifs, as well as adorable tins of sardine oil and various other seafood 🐠💙 Some of the canned goods even had Japanese descriptions, so it might be a popular spot among Japanese tourists ☺️ There was also a flower shop, and since it was the day of the Festa de São João (Festival of St. John), potted basil plants were on sale 🌱 By the way, during the Festa de São João, there's a tradition of gifting potted basil to your romantic partner or friends as a symbol of love and good luck ♡ It was so much fun browsing all the cute souvenirs, and some shops even accepted credit cards! I found Porto surprisingly easy to explore on foot. The city has plenty of hills, but the views, tiled buildings, and little cafés made the climbs feel worthwhile. Day 1 – Old Porto I started at São Bento Station, spending a few minutes admiring its famous blue and white tiles before walking toward Porto Cathedral. From there, I wandered through the narrow streets of Ribeira, eventually reaching the Dom Luís I Bridge. Sunset from the upper level was one of my favorite moments of the trip. Day 2 – Food, Wine & River Views I crossed the bridge into Vila Nova de Gaia and visited a traditional Port wine cellar. After a tasting, I walked along the waterfront and stopped for lunch with a view of Porto across the Douro. Later, I explored Livraria Lello, which was beautiful but definitely busy. Day 3 – Slow Morning I started with coffee near Clérigos Tower, then walked through Bolhão Market to see locals shopping for produce, cheese, and seafood. I ended the afternoon at Palácio de Cristal Gardens, where I found peaceful paths and excellent city views. Three days gave me a good introduction to Porto without feeling rushed. My best advice? A highly recommended spot packed with history and vibrancy~ While walking around Lisbon, I visited "Rossio Square," which has been loved as the center of civic life and culture since the Middle Ages✨ With its beautiful wave-patterned traditional Portuguese cobblestones and the majestic 28-meter-tall Column of Pedro IV towering right in the center, it's a wonderful space that looks picture-perfect from any angle! When I went, there happened to be a lively market going on🎪 A wide variety of stalls lined up, selling everything from paintings and handmade accessories to cheese, ham, flowers, and bags—just looking at them was exciting! It was the perfect atmosphere for souvenir shopping🛍️ Since it was summer, there were plenty of ice cream and fruit juice stalls... But what particularly caught my eye was a super pop and cute juice stand lavishly decorated with piles of fruit🍹 They were selling not only fresh juices for kids, but also orange and passion fruit flavored sangria🍷✨ The fact that adults can fully enjoy it too was a great bonus! Furthermore, since it was right around the season of the "Festa de São João", there were cute decorations of the traditional herb "Manjerico" (a type of basil) placed in the center of the square🪴 (By the way, I heard there is a lovely custom of gifting potted Manjericos to lovers and friends during the Festa de São João♡) When I visited around 12:30 PM, cheerful music was playing and the vibe was amazing🎶 It was full of energy but not overly crowded, creating the perfect atmosphere to stroll around and browse at my own pace! The first store opened in 1980 in Carcavelos, a suburb of Lisbon. It's one of the top three supermarket chains in Portugal and even carries its own private label products🛍️ With a great selection, it's a go-to grocery store for locals. 〜👛 My Experience〜 The store was spacious! Not only was it well-stocked with groceries, but there was also a deli area where you could buy prepared food to eat, and a spot for freshly squeezed orange juice. The variety was amazing!! Since it was the Festa de São João that day, they even had potted basil plants for sale🌿 Just wandering around the aisles was so exciting☺️ My favorite part was the huge selection of fresh fish, which makes sense since it's so close to the ocean🐟 I even found octopus, which can be pretty rare in other parts of Europe. Looking up from the bottom, the sky is framed by a small circular opening, creating a breathtaking sense of depth. The bottom connects to several man-made underground tunnels. These dark stone caves wind through the estate, leading to waterfalls and hidden lakes. Completing the tour feels like an underground adventure. · Vintage Manueline palace The main building is intricately carved with spires and stone gargoyles, creating a rich atmosphere. [Beira Rio Market] While traveling solo in Porto, Portugal, I stopped by the "Beira Rio Market" to quench my thirst on a hot day🥤 〜What is Beira Rio Market?🛍️〜 Beira Rio Market is located in the Gaia district, right across the river from Porto's historic center. Just cross the Dom Luís I Bridge and walk along the river, and you'll find it! It’s a renovated, historic indoor market originally established in 1937, where you can enjoy local foods like tapas, croquettes, roasted meats, seafood, and fresh fruits😋 There's even a dedicated stand for Portugal's iconic beer, "Super Bock"! The area around the market is also packed with restaurants, making it a fun place to stroll around and figure out what you want to eat🍽️ 〜My Thoughts📝〜 First off, the interior looked like a chic, modern warehouse. The lighting and decorations gave it a vibrant, port-town vibe that was super cute⚓️ Having the Super Bock stand right by the entrance made a strong impression and looked really cool!! I visited around 3:00 PM on a weekday, and it was buzzing with people! It seemed like a lot of folks were enjoying drinks and seafood🍺🦞 I was incredibly thirsty, so I grabbed a fresh juice from one of the fruit vendors! Out of all the options, I went with a Mango and Strawberry mix🥭🍓 It was super refreshing and tasted just like pure, fresh fruit—so delicious🥤 By the way, it cost €2.50. (They accept both credit cards and cash.) Sometimes the best travel experiences begin with an unexpected opportunity. While planning our trip through Portugal, we found a flight from Faro to Marrakech for just $25. We looked at each other and thought… “When will we get another chance to visit Africa?” So we booked it. A short flight later, we were landing on a completely new continent. It was our very first time in Africa, and we couldn’t have been more excited. If you’re already travelling through Portugal or southern Spain, Morocco can actually be a surprisingly easy addition to your itinerary. With several low-cost flights connecting the countries, it’s an incredible chance to experience a completely different culture just a short journey away. We landed in Marrakech close to 11 p.m., so after a long travel day, all we wanted was to get to our accommodation and rest. We stayed at Oasis Medina Hostel, right inside the historic Medina, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Even before we arrived, the staff arranged an airport taxi for us, making our late-night arrival completely stress-free. Considering how easy it can be to get lost in Marrakech’s maze-like streets, especially at night, we were so grateful we didn’t have to worry about finding our way with our backpacks. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth, kindness, and of course mint tea. 🤩🫖 The team helped us with everything we needed throughout our stay and made us feel at home from the very first night. Although we had only just arrived, we could already sense that Morocco would be unlike anywhere we’d ever been. The sounds… The scents… The warm evening air… Everything felt completely different. Over the next few days, we discovered vibrant souks, incredible food, breathtaking architecture, beautiful gardens, and one of the richest cultures we’ve ever experienced. We’ll be sharing all of those adventures soon. But if you’re planning a trip to Portugal or Spain and have a few extra days, don’t overlook Morocco. Sometimes, the most unforgettable journeys begin with a flight you almost didn’t book. Dear future us, thank you for saying “yes” to the unexpected.
