Encountering Gouqi Island: The bat-shaped blue sea pasture island
During the 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival, Yingzhi followed friends from the Natural Backpacker group to visit the three islands of Gouqi, Shengshan, and Huaniao.
Shortly after 7:00 AM on September 25, we departed from Ningbo by bus, arriving at Yanwoshan Pier in Daishan County, Zhoushan City at 9:00 AM. We took the Xianzhou No. 12 ferry to Gouqi Island in Shengsi County. The ticket cost CNY 200. We arrived at Ganxie Pier on Gouqi Island shortly after 11:00 AM.
Gouqi Island is the second-largest island in Shengsi County, second only to the main island, Sijiao Island. The island's shape is winding, commonly known as Qiuyu. It was named Gouqi due to the homophonic sound in the Zhoushan dialect. Another legend says that in the early years, the island was covered with wolfberry shrubs, hence the name Gouqi Island.
There is a village on the island called Ganxie Village. Gouqi Island is also called Ganxie Mountain, so the pier used to land on the island is named Ganxie Pier.
Passenger ferries to Gouqi Island are available from Shenjiamen in Zhoushan City, Yanwoshan in Daishan County, and Shenjiawan in Shengsi County. Visitors from outside the island cannot drive their own cars onto the island. There is only one car ferry per day, which is reserved for island residents and merchants. Visitors must take passenger ferries to reach the island and can charter a car to tour both Gouqi and Shengshan islands.
Upon landing, the first thing we saw was a stunning offshore farm. On the blue, glass-like sea surface, dense white and blue buoys looked like a chessboard spread across the ocean, known as the 10,000-mu sea pasture.
This is a large-scale mussel farming area, a rare type of productive marine landscape, hailed as the Blue Sea Pasture.
Mussels, commonly known as dancai, are farmed on a large scale on Gouqi and Shengshan islands, making them famous as the Home of Mussels.
The sea pasture is also a very unique East China Sea fishing scene, which looks even more magnificent in aerial footage.
After checking into our homestay, we spent the afternoon touring Gouqi Island. All attractions are free.
The topography of Gouqi Island is mainly T-shaped, with two wings spread out and the tail extending toward Lixi Village, resembling a bat with wings spread, soaring above the blue waves of the East China Sea.
On the peak of Wulibei, the southern tail of Gouqi Island, stands a giant rock that forms a scenic spot on its own, known as Mountain and Sea Wonder.
Standing on the hilltop and looking out over the vast East China Sea, where the sea meets the sky, is refreshing and relaxing.
In the 18th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1590 AD), Hou Jigao, the Commander-in-Chief of Zhejiang and Zhili, devised a plan to lure Japanese pirates to gather on Gouqi Island. He then led an ambush to wipe them out. After the victory, he inscribed the four characters "Mountain and Sea Wonder," which were carved into the giant rock by people at the time, creating the Mountain and Sea Wonder cliff inscription scenic spot.
Gouqi Township in Shengsi County includes 33 islands and reefs, the largest of which is Gouqi Island. The island includes villages such as Ganxie, Longquan, Lixi, Qiguan, and Dongsheng, where villagers have made a living by fishing for generations.
Longquan Beach and Dawang Beach are symmetrical and are great for relaxing, wading, and enjoying the sea view.
Hou Jigao, the Commander-in-Chief of Zhejiang and Zhili, had the courtesy name Longquan. Longquan Village, located next to Longquan Beach, was originally called Gouqi Ao or Da Ao. To commemorate Hou Jigao's contribution in resisting the Japanese pirates, it was named Longquan Village after his courtesy name.
In the mountain cove on the southeast side, it is said that a pirate leader once held his ground, known as the Third King. The cove was also called Third King Cove, which was gradually simplified to Dawang Village, and the beach in front of the village was named Dawang Beach. Dawang and Shipu villages have merged and were named Qiguan Village after the Mountain and Sea Wonder cliff inscription.
Between Dawang and Shipu villages, low hills extend into the sea. After millions of years of erosion by waves, they have formed a unique landscape of cliffs and precipices, which locals call the Dragon Head.
Among them is a natural stone gate, known as the Dragon Head Stone Gate, a very peculiar geological wonder. The gate is above the seawater and is only suitable for viewing from a distance or by aerial photography.
Local villagers say that when they were children, they often played under the Dragon Head Stone Gate in the summer, where the sea breeze blew through the gate, making it very cool.
To the east, Gouqi Island is adjacent to Shengshan Island, the easternmost inhabited island in mainland China. The two islands are connected by the Sanjiaojiang Bridge. Together, they are a popular island tourism destination, attracting the most visitors from Shanghai and Zhejiang.
The next stop for Yingzhi's group was Shengshan Island, where attractions like the Wizard of Oz abandoned village and the Dongya Cliffs are popular internet-famous travel destinations.
When visiting the islands of Zhoushan, you must eat seafood, which is incredibly fresh.
Zhoushan seafood is unrivaled.
