I originally thought Datong was already beautiful, until I went to Linfen....
I originally thought the Yungang Grottoes in Datong were impressive enough, but after spending three days in Linfen, I finally understood how stunning Shanxi's ancient architecture really is! Especially Guangsheng Temple, with its glazed tower and murals in the Water God Temple, I left thinking, "This trip was totally worth it."
🌞 Linfen 3-day itinerary overview: No detours, just straight to the must-see spots
Core idea: First tackle the "main course" at Guangsheng Temple, then explore the city and nearby lesser-known ancient buildings. No rushing, 2-3 spots per day, easy-going and great for photos.
Day 1: Head straight to Guangsheng Temple! Etch the glazed tower and murals into your memory
- 📍 Morning: Guangsheng Temple (a must-visit! Recommended 2.5 hours)
Search directly for "Guangsheng Temple Scenic Area" (Guangsheng Temple Town, Hongtong County). It opens at 8 AM, go early for fewer people and better light to photograph the glazed tower without backlight!
Two must-see highlights:
1. Feihong Tower: Stand in the small courtyard opposite the mountain gate for a full view. The 13-story glazed tower sparkles like scattered rainbow fragments in the sunlight. The 1986 version of "Journey to the West" filmed the sweeping tower scenes here! Get close to see the glazed reliefs on the tower body—dragons and Buddha niches are amazing. Even zooming in with your phone is stunning.
2. Water God Temple murals: A unique Yuan Dynasty "life vlog" in the country! Scenes of ancient people playing cuju (ancient golf) and setting up a stage. These aren’t cold, lifeless Buddhist or Taoist paintings but full of everyday life vibes. The special caves open on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month. Be sure to book a guide in advance (50 RMB per session), or you won’t understand the "Easter eggs" in the murals.
Little surprise: Look out for the dragon claw locust tree planted by Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, and the twisted "twist cypress" tree trunk. Watch your step—you might spot ancient stone inscriptions!
💰 Tickets: Full price 70 RMB, student 35 RMB, buy in advance on some platforms for 65 RMB; fans of the game "Black Myth: Wukong" can get free admission by showing payment records and clearance screenshots!
🚗 Transportation options:
- Self-driving: Navigate to "Guangsheng Temple Scenic Area Parking Lot," 10 RMB/day. Park and walk 5 minutes to the mountain gate. Good for those with cameras or luggage.
- Non-driving: From Linfen city, take bus 301 (5 RMB) to Hongtong Bus Station, then transfer to bus 21 (3 RMB) directly to the scenic area. High-speed rail arrives at Hongtong West Station, where a tourist shuttle (3 RMB per person) is available but requires waiting. Check departure times in advance.
📌 Route: For convenience, take the shuttle bus (round trip 20 RMB), visit the tower first, then go down to see the murals. If you’re fit, climb the stone steps in 15 minutes. You can photograph the tower’s side from the roadside—light and shadow are very soothing.
- 📍 Afternoon: Hongtong Big Locust Tree (1.5 hours, for nostalgia lovers)
20 minutes by car from Guangsheng Temple. "Ask where my ancestors are from, Shanxi Hongtong Big Locust Tree." This spot is about root-seeking culture. The "root character shadow wall" at the entrance is a must-photograph, and the immigrant relief wall inside is very immersive. Tickets are 80 RMB. If short on time, you can skip this and head straight to the Yao Temple night market in the evening!
- 📍 Evening: Yao Temple Night Market (foodies unite!)
A long-established night market in Linfen city. Must-try beef meatball noodles (15 RMB/bowl, add chili and vinegar for perfection), Quwo cured beef (sold by weight, delicious with flatbread), and after shopping, grab a cup of Linfen old yogurt (5 RMB). The atmosphere is full of local life!
Day 2: City + Xiaoxitian, hidden gems of ancient architecture
- 📍 Morning: Yao Temple (1 hour, free!)
A treasure in the city with no entrance fee! The statue of Emperor Yao and the grand Guangyun Hall are impressive. The coiled dragon pillars in front of the hall are full of detail, perfect for ancient-style photos. It’s quiet and peaceful. After visiting, head across the street for breakfast.
- 📍 Afternoon: Xixian Xiaoxitian (1.5 hours, a hidden gem)
1.5 hours by car from Linfen city, or take a bus to Xixian Bus Station (25 RMB), then a taxi for 10 RMB to the scenic area. Tickets are 35 RMB. The site is full of suspended sculptures. The Thousand Buddha Hall’s "Heavenly Palace Pavilion" is incredible, densely packed with Buddha statues and colorful paintings. Looking up will leave you speechless. Fewer people than Guangsheng Temple, so you can take great photos anywhere!
Day 3: End with Hukou Waterfall, watch the Yellow River surge
- 📍 Morning: Hukou Waterfall (2 hours, a must-see!)
2 hours by car from Linfen, tickets 120 RMB, plus 40 RMB for the shuttle bus inside the park (must buy, walking is too far). In winter, see the ice waterfall; in spring and summer, see the "Yellow River water coming from the sky." Standing on the viewing platform, you can feel the mist splash on your face—very powerful. Remember to wear non-slip shoes; the boardwalk can be slippery!
🚗 Transportation: Self-driving is most convenient. For non-drivers, there is a tourist shuttle from the city (60 RMB per person, including tickets and shuttle), departing at 7 AM and returning at 3 PM.
- 📍 Afternoon: Before leaving, try a bowl of Xiangfen crispy oil cake
If passing through Xiangfen County, be sure to buy some. 1.5 RMB each, crispy and flaky outside, with some sauce meat inside—so delicious you’ll want to pack 10 to take home!
📌 Helpful tips (must-read to avoid pitfalls!)
1. No photography allowed for Guangsheng Temple murals; don’t use flash to respect the relics.
2. Xiaoxitian and Hukou Waterfall are chilly, even in summer bring a light jacket.
3. If driving, check road conditions in advance. The road from Linfen to Hukou has some curves, drive slowly.
4. For sunset photos at Guangsheng Temple, go at 4 PM. The slanting sunlight on the glazed tower creates a golden glow!
Who would have thought! When leaving Linfen, my suitcase was filled with crispy oil cakes, and my phone had 200 photos of Guangsheng Temple. The beauty of Shanxi’s ancient architecture must be experienced in person. The stunning sense of time’s passage can’t be felt just from pictures!
If you go, remember to take a backlit photo under Feihong Tower,
