Alps of Seattle | Step into a moving landscape painting
Few people visiting Artist Point for the first time aren’t stunned by the view.
As soon as you get out of the parking lot, you’re greeted by a million-dollar view with two volcanoes side by side.
Mt. Baker is on the left, and Mt. Shuksan is on the right.
The Chain Lakes Loop circles right at their feet.
Almost no trees block the view along the way. Snow-capped peaks, glaciers, lakes, and alpine meadows keep changing, making you want to stop and take photos every few minutes.
What I truly love about this place isn’t any single viewpoint but that the scenery never seems to end.
Many trails are about reaching the destination.
Chain Lakes Loop feels like walking forward inside a painting.
Later, I found out that the name Artist Point wasn’t chosen by chance. Over a hundred years ago, this was a place where many painters sought inspiration. Standing here and looking around, it’s easy to see why—no matter which direction you look, it’s like a landscape painting. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a marmot along the way.
The entire route has no particularly technical sections,
yet it almost condenses Washington’s alpine scenery into one day.
Trail info:
📍 Chain Lakes Loop
🥾 About 7–8 miles (loop)
📈 Elevation gain: about 1,800 ft
🌼 Best season: July–September (wildflowers in bloom, alpine scenery)
🚗 Artist Point road is usually closed in winter and open only in summer. The parking lot requires an America the Beautiful Pass or Northwest Forest Pass; the Discover Pass is not accepted. Weekends in summer are busy, so arriving early in the morning makes it easier to find a parking spot.

One-day hiking fan favorite! The stunning Mt. Baker Chain Lake Loop
Finally checked in at the famous Chain Lake Loop Trail! Located in the Mt. Baker-Whtney mountain range in the United States, just a 2-hour drive from Vancouver 🚗
📍Address: Mount Baker Highway, Glacier, WA 98244
✨Trip Highlights:
Round trip on the 10/12 long weekend day
Arrive at Abbotsford Customs at 8:30 AM
2.5-hour queue at customs (recommend getting there early on weekends)
🔄Loop Trail Tips:
Chain Lake Loop is a circular trail
Can be hiked clockwise or counterclockwise
Strongly recommend going counterclockwise in the morning
(Walking towards the sun, the scenery is more beautiful and not backlit)
🚗 Parking Tips:
If traveling with 2+ cars
Recommend parking separately at:
· Heather Meadow mid-mountain parking lot
· Artist Point summit parking lot
(A great way to save energy √)
Real experience: We parked at Artist Point
By the time we reached Heather Meadow going clockwise, we were dehydrated from the sun 💦
Luckily, a kind Seattle guy driving a Jeep gave us a ride back to the summit!
⚠️Must-have items:
☀️High SPF sunscreen
🧢Sun hat
👚Sun-protective clothing
(Exposed to full sun with no shade all the way!)
📝Must do for US trips:
· Update EVUS
· Update I94
· Purchase a $5 National Forest Recreation Day Pass in advance (available on the official website)

Autumn viewing and Chain Lakes hiking at Mt Baker
The long Thanksgiving weekend at Mt Baker for autumn viewing is a two-way rush for people in Vancouver and Seattle. We crossed the border from Sumas, Canada, made a brief stop at the Glacier Visitor Center, and then drove around the winding mountain road to reach the Austin Pass parking lot. Continuing upwards, you can reach the larger parking lot at Artist Point, but we arrived at 9:30 and there were still parking spaces, so we simply parked at Austin Pass. From here, we walked the Chain Lakes Loop in a counterclockwise direction, and the last 2 kilometers were very easy, all downhill. The total distance is actually about 8.5 kilometers, and we completed it in four and a half hours with stops along the way.
I highly recommend downloading the AIITrails APP. Those coming from Canada can download offline maps, which are very useful. It will tell you the exact direction, altitude, distance, etc. You can start a 7-day free membership and then cancel. Along the way, you will pass Picture Lake where you can take pictures in the morning and again on the way back.
Things you must bring for autumn mountain climbing are:
⭐Sun hat and sunscreen
⭐Hiking stick, one or two are fine
⭐Enough water, this route takes at least three and a half hours to complete
⭐Snacks, sit down and replenish your energy in places with beautiful scenery
⭐Long sleeves are recommended, a thin jacket can be worn at the mountain top
⭐There are no toilets along the way, and the condition of the parking lot toilets is very poor, FYI.
