Alghero travel guide and discussion

I’ll admit it — I went to Sardinia expecting a quieter version of Sicily. What I found instead was an island with its own fierce identity: turquoise water that looks almost artificial, granite mountains dropping straight into the sea, and a pace of life that seems to have skipped the memo about tourist season altogether. Sardinia doesn’t try to convince you of anything. It doesn’t need to. From the moment I landed, I understood why in-the-know travelers have been quietly claiming this island as their favorite corner of Italy — and why the rest of the world is finally starting to notice. 🏖️ Water You Have to See to Believe The Costa Smeralda earns its name honestly. I stood at the edge of Spiaggia del Principe and genuinely questioned whether the color of the water was real — a shade of emerald-blue I hadn’t seen outside of postcards. Unlike some of Italy’s more famous coastlines, the beaches here feel spacious, with granite boulders sculpted by wind into strange, beautiful shapes along the shore. Further south, Chia surprised me even more. Wide dunes back onto a beach with sand so fine it feels sifted, and the water shifts through gradients of blue that seem to change by the hour. I spent an entire afternoon just watching flamingos wade through the nearby lagoon — an unexpected, almost surreal detail I hadn’t planned for. 🏛️ A Different Kind of Ancient Sardinia’s history runs deeper than most visitors realize. I spent a morning at Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a Bronze Age stone tower complex older than most of Rome’s famous ruins, and one of the island’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. Walking through the nuraghi — these mysterious circular stone structures scattered across the island — felt like stepping into a chapter of history most travel itineraries skip entirely. Cagliari, the capital, balances that ancient character with everyday life. Its hilltop old town, Castello, offers sweeping views over pastel rooftops and the harbor beyond, and by evening, the narrow streets fill with the smell of fresh bread and the sound of locals catching up after work. 🍝 Flavors of the Island Sardinian food tells its own story — shaped by both the sea and the mountains. I tried culurgiones, a stuffed pasta unique to the island, and porceddu, slow-roasted suckling pig prepared over an open flame, a dish that felt like a genuine window into island tradition rather than something staged for visitors. Coastal towns serve some of the freshest seafood I’ve had in Italy, often caught the same morning it reaches your plate. 🏨 Where to Stay For beach-focused trips, base yourself around Porto Cervo or the Costa Smeralda for easy access to the island’s most striking coastline, along with upscale dining and boutique shopping. If you’d rather mix culture with coast, Cagliari makes an excellent hub — central, walkable, and close to both the airport and southern beaches like Chia and Poetto. For something quieter, the Ogliastra region on the east coast offers dramatic cliffs and far fewer crowds, ideal if you’re chasing a slower, more local pace. ✈️ Getting There Sardinia has three main airports: Cagliari-Elmas in the south, Olbia in the northeast (closest to the Costa Smeralda), and Alghero in the northwest. Seasonal direct flights connect Sardinia to major European cities, while ferries also run from mainland Italy, including Rome and Genoa, for travelers who want to bring a car or enjoy a scenic sea crossing. 🌊 A Final Thought Sardinia doesn’t feel like Italy’s alternative to anywhere else — it feels entirely like itself. Somewhere between the ancient stone towers and the impossibly blue water, I stopped comparing it to Sicily or the Amalfi Coast altogether. It didn’t need the comparison. Neither, I suspect, will you. Hey fam! Sardinia is one of those destinations that almost looks unreal. The transparent turquoise water, pale sand, hidden coves and dramatic cliffs could easily belong to a tropical island, yet the traditional villages, ancient archaeological sites and distinctive cuisine make it unmistakably Italian. What surprised me most is the island’s variety. One day can be spent swimming in calm, shallow water; the next can include a mountain hike, a visit to a prehistoric Nuragic site or dinner in a small inland village. Sardinia is not a destination to experience from a single resort, and it deserves much more than a rushed weekend. How Many Days Do You Need? Seven days provide enough time to explore one region comfortably. Ten to fourteen days are better if you want to combine two different parts of the island. Sardinia is much larger than many travellers expect. Trying to see Cagliari, Alghero, Costa Smeralda and the Gulf of Orosei during the same short trip means spending too much time driving. My strongest recommendation is to choose one main area and explore it properly: Southern Sardinia is ideal for Cagliari, Chia, Villasimius, Pula and archaeological attractions. Northeastern Sardinia is best for Olbia, Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro and the La Maddalena Archipelago. Northwestern Sardinia offers Alghero, Bosa, Stintino, La Pelosa and access to Asinara. Eastern Sardinia is the right choice for Cala Gonone, Baunei, Cala Goloritzé and boat trips through the Gulf of Orosei. Best Time To Visit 📆 June and September are probably the best months for most travellers. The weather is generally warm enough for swimming, restaurants and tourism services are operating, and the beaches are usually less overwhelming than in August. Late May can also be excellent for sightseeing, road trips and hiking, although the sea may feel cooler. July and August offer the liveliest atmosphere but also bring higher accommodation prices, busy roads and crowded beaches. During the hottest months, visit beaches early, have a long lunch or rest during the middle of the day, and explore villages in the late afternoon. Choosing The Right Airport✈️ Sardinia has three principal airports, and choosing the one closest to your accommodation can save several hours of driving. Cagliari Airport is the best gateway for the south. The airport train station is approximately a five-minute walk from the terminal, and trains reach central Cagliari in around five to seven minutes. The official airport website currently lists a single fare of €1.30, with services running at an average frequency of about 20 minutes during operating hours. Olbia Airport is the most convenient option for Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro, Palau and much of northeastern Sardinia. The airport provides local and regional bus connections, taxis and car-rental services. Alghero Airport is useful for Alghero, Sassari, Bosa and Stintino. It is approximately ten kilometres from Alghero city centre, and bus stops and taxi ranks are located near the terminal entrances. Before booking a flight solely because it is cheaper, calculate the cost and travel time of reaching your final accommodation. A low-cost flight to the opposite side of the island may result in an expensive transfer or a long drive. Getting Around Sardinia✨ Renting a car is the easiest way to explore the island independently. Buses and trains serve the main cities and some popular destinations, but many beaches, rural restaurants and small villages are difficult to reach without private transport. Sardinia’s tourism authority specifically recommends a car, motorcycle or bicycle for travellers who want maximum freedom. Book rental vehicles early during summer, particularly if you need an automatic car. Before leaving the rental office: · Photograph every side of the vehicle. · Check the fuel policy. · Confirm whether unpaved roads are permitted. · Inspect the tyres. · Save the emergency number. · Ask whether the accommodation is located inside a restricted traffic zone. Do not assume every scenic road is easy. Some coastal routes are narrow, winding and poorly lit after sunset. Allow more time than online maps suggest and avoid planning long cross-island drives immediately after a beach day. Beaches You Should Not Miss🏖️ Sardinia has enough spectacular beaches to make choosing difficult. The best option depends on where you are staying and the type of experience you want. La Pelosa🫶🏼 La Pelosa, near Stintino, is famous for fine white sand, shallow turquoise water and views towards its historic tower. The surrounding landforms and islands help shelter the bay from the open sea. Do not arrive without checking the official booking system. A beach mat is also required beneath towels to help protect the sand, and removing sand or natural materials is prohibited. Cala Goloritzé😍 Cala Goloritzé is one of Sardinia’s most dramatic coves, surrounded by limestone cliffs and reached by a hiking route through the Supramonte di Baunei. Access must be reserved through the authorised Heart of Sardinia system. The listed 2026 price is €7. This is not a casual beach walk. Wear hiking shoes, carry plenty of water and save enough energy for the uphill return. Flip-flops are not suitable. Gulf Of Orosei✅ A boat excursion from Cala Gonone or Santa Maria Navarrese is one of the most memorable activities on the island. ⚠️Before booking, ask about: · The number of passengers. · The amount of shade. · Swimming-stop duration. · Whether food and water are included. · The cancellation policy. · Whether beach-landing reservations are covered. · The type of boat used. Smaller boats often provide a more personal experience, while larger vessels may offer better stability and facilities. Chia And Villasimius✨ Southern Sardinia has some of the island’s most accessible beach areas. Chia is known for dunes, lagoons and long stretches of clear water, while Villasimius combines organised beaches, coves and marine scenery. These areas are good choices for travellers staying in Cagliari who want day trips without crossing the entire island. Costa Smeralda And La Maddalena☺️ Costa Smeralda is Sardinia’s most glamorous area, but you do not need to stay in an expensive resort to enjoy the coastline. For a full-day experience, take a boat trip through the La Maddalena Archipelago. Check exactly which islands and swimming stops are included, as itineraries vary according to the operator and sea conditions. The Best Towns And Villages⛰️ Cagliari Cagliari is more than an arrival point. Explore the elevated Castello district, walk through the narrow historic streets, visit Bastione di Saint Remy and spend an evening in the Marina neighbourhood. Poetto Beach is close enough to combine city sightseeing with time by the sea. Alghero Alghero has one of Sardinia’s most atmospheric historic centres. Its stone walls, seafront promenade and Catalan cultural influence make it noticeably different from other island towns. Walk along the city walls before sunset and remain for dinner after day visitors leave. Best Photography Spots📸 La Pelosa looks best early in the morning, when the water is calm and fewer visitors are standing near the shoreline. Use the Aragonese tower as a background rather than photographing only the sea. In Alghero, walk along the defensive walls during golden hour and photograph the coastline through the historic towers and stone openings. Bosa is especially photogenic from the opposite side of the river, where the colourful houses can be captured rising towards the castle. At Cala Goloritzé, the limestone pinnacle and natural arch provide the most distinctive compositions. Keep electronics protected from water and avoid climbing unstable rocks for a better angle. In Cagliari, photograph the city from Bastione di Saint Remy and look for flamingos around the Molentargius wetlands without approaching or disturbing them. What To Eat In Sardinia🍔 Sardinian cuisine deserves as much attention as the coastline. It combines seafood traditions with pastoral dishes, handmade pasta, bread, cheeses and recipes that vary between regions. Try culurgiones, filled pasta parcels commonly associated with Ogliastra and traditionally prepared with potato, cheese and mint. Order malloreddus, small Sardinian pasta often served with sausage and tomato sauce. Taste fregola, toasted pasta beads that are frequently paired with clams or seafood. Pane carasau is a thin, crisp bread traditionally connected with Sardinian shepherding culture. Bottarga, cured fish roe, may be grated over pasta or served in thin slices. The island’s official tourism authority also highlights pecorino cheeses, pane frattau, lorighittas, roast lamb, seafood, almond desserts and local wines among Sardinia’s culinary traditions. Pair seafood with a chilled Vermentino, or try Cannonau with meat. Mirto, a myrtle-based liqueur, is commonly served after a meal. Unique Food Tips🌯 Book at least one dinner at an agriturismo. These countryside establishments often serve a fixed sequence of traditional dishes made with regional ingredients. Arrive hungry, because meals can include several starters, pasta, meat, dessert, wine and digestifs. At seafood restaurants, ask whether fresh fish is priced by weight. Request the approximate final cost before confirming your order. Restaurants directly beside famous beaches often charge more for convenience. A village ten or fifteen minutes inland may offer better food, larger portions and a more local atmosphere. Do not expect dinner everywhere at 6:00 p.m. Many restaurants follow later Italian dining hours, particularly during summer. Tips That Can Make The Trip Much Easier🫶🏼 Carry cash for parking machines, small cafés and remote services, even though card payment is widely available in larger towns. Buy water before visiting isolated beaches. Some coves have no facilities, shade or reliable mobile coverage. Keep one day flexible. Wind can make one coastline uncomfortable while the opposite side remains calm. Reserve regulated beaches, boat trips and rental cars before travelling during the peak season. Check parking rules carefully. A space that looks informal may still require payment through a machine or mobile application. Pack water shoes for rocky entries, but also bring proper trainers or hiking footwear for trails. Use reef-conscious sun protection and avoid applying oily products immediately before entering clear, enclosed coves. Things To 🚫 Do not attempt to explore the entire island in one week. Avoid taking sand, shells, stones or other natural materials. Removing sand from Sardinian beaches is prohibited and can damage already fragile coastal environments. Avoid entering the water when local warnings, strong wind or rough waves indicate unsafe conditions. Do not depend on the final bus of the day without checking the latest seasonal schedule. Avoid driving after drinking wine or mirto. Rural accommodation can be far from restaurants, so arrange a designated driver or stay overnight. Do not enter private paths, gardens or terraces simply because they offer a good photograph. Final tips ✅ Sardinia is one of the most rewarding destinations in the Mediterranean, but it is best experienced slowly. Choose one or two regions, rent a car, leave space for changing weather and avoid turning every day into a race between famous beaches. The island’s beauty is undeniable, but the most memorable moments may be less obvious: a long countryside lunch, an empty village street after sunset, a plate of handmade pasta or a quiet cove discovered after taking the wrong road. Come for the turquoise sea, but stay for the food, villages, landscapes and distinctive culture that make Sardinia feel like a country of its own. #travel2026 #couplestrip #travel

My recent trip to Alghero, Sardinia, was an unforgettable experience that combined the charm of ancient history with breathtaking natural beauty. Known for its Catalan heritage, this picturesque town on the northwest coast of Sardinia offers a unique blend of cultures, cuisines, and landscapes. Here’s an in-depth review of my visit, along with some tips, recommendations, and little-known secrets to help you make the most of your own trip to Alghero. The charm of Alghero Alghero immediately captivated me with its cobbled streets, historic buildings, and vibrant, yet relaxed atmosphere. The old town, with its narrow alleys and beautifully preserved medieval architecture, feels like a step back in time. One of the highlights was walking along the city’s ancient walls, which offer stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the rugged coastline. The Catalan influence is evident everywhere, from the language spoken by the locals to the architecture and even the cuisine. It’s fascinating to see street signs in both Italian and Catalan, and I highly recommend visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which showcases a blend of Gothic and Catalan styles. Culinary delights Food is a central part of the Alghero experience, and I was delighted by the variety and quality of the local cuisine. Seafood lovers will be in paradise here; dishes like *aragosta alla catalana* (Catalan-style lobster) are not to be missed. I had an incredible meal at Trattoria Maristella, where the fresh seafood and homemade pasta were simply exquisite. For a more casual dining experience, try some local street food. I found a small stand near the port that served *fainè*, a delicious chickpea flatbread that’s a local specialty. Pair it with a glass of Vermentino, a crisp white wine produced in Sardinia, for a true taste of the region. Must-visit spots and hidden gems While Alghero’s old town is a must-visit, don’t miss the nearby beaches, which are some of the most beautiful I’ve seen. La Pelosa Beach, about an hour’s drive from Alghero, is famous for its crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand. Although it’s a bit of a journey, it’s well worth it. Just be sure to arrive early, as it gets crowded during peak season. Closer to town, Maria Pia Beach offers a more relaxed atmosphere with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the sun. It’s also less crowded than some of the more popular beaches, making it a perfect spot for a quiet afternoon. One of the best-kept secrets of Alghero is Neptune’s Grotto, a stunning sea cave located at Capo Caccia, about 24 kilometers from Alghero. The cave is accessible by boat or by descending the 654 steps of the Escala del Cabirol. The boat trip is a fantastic option as it allows you to take in the dramatic cliffs from the water. Inside, the cave’s stalactites and stalagmites are beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere that’s truly unforgettable. #italytravel #italytrip #mytravelhacks #familytrip

Alghero is a city of about 45,000 inhabitants in the province of Sarri in northwestern Italy on the island of Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily. The city's long history can be easily overlooked because of the many World War II fortifications it has seen so many times. Archaeological sites prove the presence of the Ozieri culture here in the 4th millennium BC, while the Nuragic civilization settled in the area around 1500 BC. The Phineas arrived in the 8th century BC, in the metalworking town of Sant'Imbenia in what was later the Arghero region. The Phineas lived here together with the Nuragic people and traded with the Etruscans in what is now Greater Italy. Due to its strategic location on the Mediterranean Sea, Alghero developed into a fortified port city in 1102, founded by the Genoese Doria family. The Doria family ruled Arghero for several centuries, except for a brief period from 1283 to 1284 when it was ruled by Pisa. Later, with the arrival of Catalan colonists, the population of Alghero continued to increase. In the early 16th century, Arghero was recognized by the Pope as a bishopric and royal city, and it developed rapidly economically. Arghero was conquered by force by King Pere III of Aragon (1336-1387), who later actively promoted the colonization of the city and surrounding areas, and because of the attractive privileges he obtained, countless families moved here from different regions of the Aragonese royal family at that time, including Valencia, Mallorca and Catalonia. In fact, they replaced the indigenous people, some of whom were sent as slaves to the Iberian Peninsula and Mallorca. The dialects spoken by these families in Algeria are very similar and come from the same language family. Over time, despite the subsequent decline of the Aragonese monarchy, it settled into its current Catalan form. The Aragonese were followed by the Habsburgs, who ruled until 1702 and continued to expand the city. In 1720, Alghero, along with the rest of Sardinia, was handed over to the Piedmont-based House of Savoy, who, upon their arrival, began a policy of Italianization. In 1943 during World War II, Alghero was bombed by the Allies and its historic centre suffered severe damage. Maybe it’s due to the post-war reconstruction, but now it seems that it has not been affected by the war. The natural scenery near the city is, in my opinion, the most beautiful place in Sardinia. #OverseasTravel #Europe #EuropeTravel #EuropeTourism #EuropeTour #Mediterranean #IslandHoliday #IslandTour #History #Italy

In my opinion, Alghero is such a good place to have relax because it has very beautiful beaches and also a good place to do tourism, its city center is really interesting and nice. As always, eating some pasta when travelling to Italy is a must, so in front of the port there are plenty of restaurants to have lunch. 🍝 #mytripvlog #italy #italianfood #sardegna #pastalover #beachlife

Sardinia is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but there is much more to discover beyond the beaches. Inland, you’ll find rugged landscapes and mysterious ancient stone structures, while along the coast, small towns offer harbours, seafood restaurants and relaxed Mediterranean evenings. The island is also surprisingly varied. The glamorous Costa Smeralda feels very different from the historic streets of Alghero or the wild scenery around the Gulf of Orosei. Choosing the right area can make a big difference when planning your trip. 📍 5 Places to Add to Your Sardinia Itinerary 1. La Pelosa Beach Located near Stintino in northwestern Sardinia, La Pelosa is known for its shallow, clear water and pale sand. It’s especially attractive on calm, sunny days. During the busy season, access may require advance booking, so check the latest rules before visiting. 2. Costa Smeralda This northeastern stretch of coastline is known for beautiful bays, upscale resorts and colourful Mediterranean scenery. Porto Cervo is worth a stop for its marina, boutiques and waterfront atmosphere, even if you’re simply visiting for a walk. 3. Alghero Old Town Alghero offers a different side of the island, with historic walls, narrow cobbled lanes and a harbour facing the sea. Spend time exploring the old town before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant. 4. Cala Goloritzé One of Sardinia’s most striking coastal spots, Cala Goloritzé features bright blue water, limestone cliffs and a distinctive rock pinnacle. Reaching it involves a hike or a sea-based excursion subject to local access rules, so plan ahead rather than treating it as an easy roadside beach stop. 5. Su Nuraxi di Barumini For a cultural break from the coastline, visit this important archaeological site featuring a prehistoric Nuragic complex. It reveals a fascinating part of Sardinia’s ancient history and provides a contrast to the island’s beach destinations. 🚗 Suggested 5-Day Itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Olbia and explore the Costa Smeralda area. Day 2: Visit nearby beaches and enjoy a relaxed coastal day. Day 3: Travel towards Alghero and explore its historic old town. Day 4: Visit La Pelosa Beach near Stintino, checking seasonal access requirements in advance. Day 5: If your departure route allows, explore Su Nuraxi di Barumini or choose a coastal stop closer to your accommodation. Sardinia is a large island, so this itinerary involves considerable driving if you try to cover all these areas. For a more relaxed holiday, choose either the northwestern coast or the northeast as your main base instead of changing hotels every night. ✈️ Practical Travel Tips · Best time to visit: May, June and September can offer warm weather with fewer crowds than the peak summer months. July and August are popular and often more expensive. · Getting around: A rental car is useful for reaching beaches and smaller villages. Check parking arrangements and beach-access rules before driving out. · Accommodation: Staying near Olbia works well for exploring the northeast, while Alghero is convenient for the northwestern coast. · Beach preparation: Some coves have pebbles or rocky entrances. Water shoes can be helpful. · Food to try: Look for fregola, a Sardinian toasted pasta, seafood dishes and seadas, a traditional pastry often served with honey. · Plan realistically: Distances can be deceptive on winding coastal roads. Avoid packing too many beaches into a single day. Sardinia is a destination where you can combine beach time with historic towns, local food and ancient heritage. Whether you prefer a quiet cove or an evening wandering through old streets, the island offers plenty of ways to experience the Mediterranean beyond the usual resort holiday. #Sardinia #SardiniaItaly #ItalyTravel #LaPelosaBeach #CostaSmeralda #Alghero #CalaGoloritzé #MediterraneanTravel #EuropeanSummer #Tripcom

Leaving Olbia and heading west back to the province of Sassari, I was stopped in my tracks by Castelsardo. This old town on the cliff looks like a colorful building block embedded in the rock, with an ancient castle at the top overlooking the white-capped, turbulent sea. Following the "Historic Center" guide map, I ducked into the stone alleys and found the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (12th–13th century). Bronze plaques record the transition between the Benedictines and the Franciscans, along with the mysterious "Black Christ" and a bell from 1601. The wind blew from the sea into the old town, the medieval stone walls soaked in salt, and every step felt like walking through layers of history. I decided to just stay here and relax, quietly soaking in the town from day to night until it felt like a well-worn treasure. The scenery was beautiful, the people were nice, and the food and freshly caught fish were mouthwatering—I couldn't bear to leave. Continuing along the coastline back to Alghero, the shore remained wild, with the deep blue sea churning like crushed gold and white waves crashing against the rocks with foam. From the tranquility of Villasimius to the weathered charm of Castelsardo, and the ceaseless sound of the waves along the way, the wildness of Sardinia was fully captured in my eyes. Along the way, white sand beaches, black sand beaches, golden sand beaches, white pebble beaches, gravel beaches... the work fatigue was long ago swept away by the sea breeze. My original intention of island-hopping in the Mediterranean was fulfilled right here, amidst the alternation of ancient castles and ocean waves—grounded and free.

There are places you return to for museums or landmarks. I’d return to Alghero simply for the feeling of being there. This Sardinian town has exactly the kind of Mediterranean atmosphere that makes you want to slow down. Start with a morning in the old town, wander through its narrow streets, stop for coffee, and then spend the afternoon beside incredibly clear blue water. The coastline around Alghero is a huge part of the appeal. Beautiful beaches, rocky coves and that unmistakable Sardinian sea make it very easy to spend several days doing almost nothing - in the best possible way. Then, in the evening, you can return to the old walls for a walk as the sun goes down over the Mediterranean. I wouldn’t come back with a packed itinerary. I’d come back for the sea, long evenings and that relaxed island rhythm. Could you spend a week here doing almost nothing? #Alghero #Sardinia #Italy #Mediterranean #ItalyTravel #BeachLife #repeatdestination

🇮🇹✨ Everyone talks about the famous spots in Sardinia… but what if one of the smartest places to stay is somewhere most tourists overlook? 📍 Porto Torres, Sardinia 🌊 If Sardinia is on your bucket list but the prices are making you think twice, Porto Torres might be exactly what you’re looking for. This coastal town in the north-west of the island gives you beautiful Mediterranean scenery, beaches, history, authentic Sardinian life and, most importantly, a much more budget-friendly base for exploring this incredible island. ☀️💙 And here’s the best part: you don’t have to stay in an expensive resort to experience some of northern Sardinia’s most beautiful places. Porto Torres is incredibly well positioned for exploring. 🚗🚆🚌 From here, you can easily plan day trips by car, train, bus or ferry, making it a great choice if you want to see more than just one corner of Sardinia. ✨ Spend a day wandering through beautiful Alghero, with its old streets, sea views and unforgettable sunsets. 🏖️ Head towards Stintino and La Pelosa, famous for incredibly clear turquoise water that almost looks Caribbean. 🏛️ Visit Sassari for a completely different side of Sardinia, with local life, architecture, cafés and history. ⛴️ And one experience you absolutely shouldn’t miss? Asinara National Park. Boats leave from Porto Torres, giving you access to one of Sardinia’s most fascinating natural areas, filled with wild landscapes, crystal-clear water, secluded beaches and incredible scenery. 🏝️ But Porto Torres isn’t just somewhere to sleep between day trips. Take time to enjoy the town itself. Walk along the coast, discover its historic sites, find a quiet beach, stop for seafood or a plate of traditional Sardinian food, and enjoy the slower pace of life. 🌅🍝 One of the things I love most about Porto Torres is that it feels practical without losing that Mediterranean charm. You can experience Sardinia without feeling like every moment of your trip has been designed around tourists — and without paying the prices you’ll often find in the island’s most famous luxury destinations. 💡 A few tips before you go: 🚗 If your budget allows, rent a car. Sardinia is made for road trips, and having your own car gives you the freedom to discover hidden beaches, small villages, coastal roads and viewpoints you might otherwise miss. 🚆 If you’re travelling on a tighter budget, don’t worry. Porto Torres has train and bus connections, so you can still explore without renting a car for your entire stay. ⛴️ Plan your Asinara trip in advance, especially during the busier months. It’s one of those experiences that can easily become a highlight of your Sardinia trip. 💶 Compare accommodation in Porto Torres with the better-known tourist areas nearby. You may be surprised by how much further your budget can stretch here. 🍝 Skip the overly touristy places when you can and look for smaller local restaurants. Sardinian food is part of the experience, and some of the simplest meals can end up being the ones you remember most. 🗓️ For an even better-value trip, consider late spring or early autumn. You can often enjoy beautiful weather and a more relaxed atmosphere without the intensity and prices of peak summer. 🌅 And one final tip: don’t fill every day with sightseeing. Leave yourself an evening to sit by the sea, watch the sun go down and enjoy the fact that you’re in Sardinia. Porto Torres might not be the place everyone shows you first when they talk about Sardinia — and maybe that’s exactly why you should consider it. It’s affordable, beautiful, authentic and strategically located for exploring some of the most spectacular places in northern Sardinia. Instead of spending your entire budget on accommodation in one famous resort, you can make Porto Torres your base and turn your holiday into an adventure around the island. 🚗🌊🇮🇹 Sometimes the best travel destinations aren’t the places everyone is already posting about. They’re the places that make you wonder: “How did I not know about this before?” ✨ #unforgettabletravelexperiences

Some sunset spots are all about finding the highest viewpoint. In Alghero, I preferred being right down at the harbor. As evening approaches, the boats turn into silhouettes and the masts create hundreds of thin lines against the changing sky. Behind them, the Mediterranean slowly shifts from bright blue to gold and orange. What I liked most was how naturally sunset fits into an evening in Alghero. You can spend the afternoon exploring the old town, walk along the historic walls and then end up beside the harbor without needing to plan a separate sunset trip. And after the sun disappears, you are already exactly where you want to be - next to the old streets, restaurants and waterfront. I've seen more dramatic sunset viewpoints, but Alghero reminded me that atmosphere matters just as much as elevation. Sometimes all you need is a harbor full of boats, an open Mediterranean horizon and nowhere else you need to be. What's your favorite setting for sunset - a beach, mountains or a harbor? #Alghero #Sardinia #Italy #Mediterranean #SardiniaTravel #SunsetViews #sunsetplaces

🪨 The grotto is located on the Capo Caccia peninsula, just a short distance from the city of Alghero. This stalactite cave truly feels like a fairy-tale underground palace. Centuries-old stalactites and stalagmites merge into bizarre and fascinating shapes: columns, arches, niches, with some formations even resembling a church organ. 💥 One of the main highlights is the saltwater Lake Lamarmora. It is quite large (stretching about 100 meters) and sits at sea level. After walking through the grand halls, you can climb up to the Music Tribune (Tribuna della Musica) and look down at the grotto and the lake from above—the view is absolutely stunning. 📜 A little history and local legends According to legend, the grotto was first discovered by local fishermen. During a violent storm, their boat was pushed against the cliffs. Seeking shelter in the opening, they lit a torch and uncovered this underground marvel. However, historians trace the first tourist visits back to the 18th century. The cave was officially opened to the public in the 1950s, and in 1959, a staircase with around 650–675 steps—the Scala del Capriolo ("Goat's Steps")—was carved into the cliff face to allow access by land. 🚌 How to get there and things to keep in mind There are two ways to visit: 🛳️ By sea. Boats depart regularly from the port of Alghero or the Cala Dragunara bay. 🚘 By land. You can walk down the famous staircase from the parking lot at the top of the cliff. Keep in mind: the hike back up can be quite challenging on a hot day. A few practical tips: 🌊 You can only enter the grotto when the sea is calm, as the entrance is just about a meter above water level. ☝️ It’s cool and damp inside, so be sure to bring a light jacket or sweater. Guided tours (in Italian or English) are required and last about 45 minutes. Do not try to break off any stalactites or stalagmites—locals believe it angers the spirits of the cave. Instead, you can toss a coin into the lake as a sign of respect. Flash photography is generally prohibited.

For me, every perfect summer day has one thing in common – it deserves an unforgettable sunset. I've watched the sun disappear over quiet beaches, dramatic coastlines, and endless northern skies. Each place has its own colors, its own atmosphere, and its own way of saying goodbye to the day. 🇬🇪 In Ureki, the Black Sea slowly turns golden as families stroll along the beach and the warm evening air makes you want to stay outside just a little longer. 🇮🇹 In Alghero, Sardinia, the sun melts into the Mediterranean, painting the old town's stone walls and the sea in shades of orange and pink. 🇰🇿 In Aktau, there's something surreal about watching the sunset over the Caspian Sea. The cliffs, the calm water, and the wide open horizon create a completely different feeling from anywhere else I've visited. 🇮🇸 In Iceland, summer sunsets seem to last forever. The sky barely gets dark, stretching golden hour into an endless evening that feels almost unreal. ✈️ And sometimes, my favorite sunset isn't tied to any destination at all. It's the one seen through an airplane window, somewhere above the clouds, knowing that another adventure is waiting on the other side of the flight. Maybe that's my perfect ending to a summer day - not arriving, but already being on the way to the next destination. Which sunset would you choose to end your perfect summer day? Or would you rather watch it from 35,000 feet, dreaming about where you're going next? 🌅✈️

Neptune’s Grotto (Grotta di Nettuno) is one of the most spectacular marine caves in Europe and the premier natural attraction near Alghero, located at the base of the towering limestone cliffs of Cape Caccia. 🌍 Geology and Discovery · Ancient Origins: Formed millions of years ago within the limestone cliffs, this freshwater-carved cave was rediscovered by local fishermen in the 18th century. · Stunning Formations: The interior acts as a natural cathedral, packed with massive stalactites and stalagmites that have grown just millimeters per century. · LaMarmora Lake: The cave houses one of the largest underground saltwater lakes in Europe, stretching around 120 meters long with crystal-clear reflections. 🧭 How to Get There · By Land (Escala del Cabirol): You can walk down the famous "Goat's Steps"—a breathtaking staircase of 654 steps carved into the sheer cliff face. The return climb requires decent physical fitness. · By Sea (Boat Trip): Tourist boats depart regularly from the Port of Alghero or the nearby town of Fertilia. This option lands you directly at the cave entrance but depends entirely on calm sea conditions. 🏛️ Inside the Grotto (The Tourist Trail) · The Room of Ruins: The initial grand hall where massive columns and collapsed limestone structures create a dramatic, ancient atmosphere. · The Christmas Tree: A famous, uniquely shaped stalagmite that bears a striking resemblance to a decorated pine tree. · The Music Tribune: A natural balcony offering a panoramic view over the underground lake and its forest of stone columns. ℹ️ Practical Visitor Tips · Tour Duration: Guided tours cover a safe, illuminated path of about 580 meters and last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. · Footwear: Sturdy, non-slip walking shoes are highly recommended, especially for navigating the steep stairs which can get slippery from sea humidity. · Booking: Space is limited per hourly slot, making it essential to book your entry time online in advance during the peak summer months. #beachlife #travel2026 #seascapes #myitinerary

Drive to La Maddalena Archipelago (ferry €40 return) and take a half-day boat tour (~€100 per couple) to swim through hidden pink-sand coves. Inland, hike the Supramonte Hills, golden in late afternoon light, and watch wild goats graze below the cliffs. 🍋 Lunch at Ristorante La Gritta in Palau for lobster pasta (€35 pp) and a chilled Vermentino (€25 bottle).
