#easytravelpost Roan Mountain straddles the NC/TN line at 6,285 ft; the grassy balds run Carvers Gap (5,500 ft) → Round Bald → Jane Bald → Grassy Ridge Bald (6,189 ft), ~6 mi round trip to Grassy Ridge from Carvers Gap. No AT thru-hike permit needed for day use; backcountry permits only inside GSMNP sections elsewhere, not here. I parked at Carvers Gap (lot fills by 8 a.m. on weekends, $0 fee, no booth), walked the AT northeast.
Round Bald is 0.7 mi, open meadow, 360° on three states. Jane Bald adds rock outcrops and the first Catawba rhododendron buds (peak late June, the largest natural rhododendron garden in North America). Grassy Ridge is the quiet end—wind, grass, no people. I ate lunch at 6,000 ft in 18°C with a 30 mph breeze; a 20°F bag is right for an overnight, even in July the night drops to 5°C.
Mistake: I wore trail runners and the grass-bald dew soaked my socks by mile 2—gaiters or quick-dry. Another: I came August 1 and missed the rhododendron by 5 weeks; late June only for the bloom, or October for the grass-fire color. Would you walk Carvers Gap→Round Bald as a 1.5 mi family stroll, or push to Grassy Ridge for the 6 mi bald traverse and the sunset?
