My favorite is Cave 51, where the Buddha statues are the best preserved, and the backlit flying apsaras are especially beautiful. 💡 Tested Tips: · Tickets + shuttle bus cost 68 RMB; it’s cheaper to buy online in advance than on-site · The scenic area is large, so definitely take the shuttle bus; walking would be exhausting · The Danxia landform behind the Great Buddha is a perfect photo spot that 99% of visitors miss—make sure to go there · Hiring a guide makes it much more interesting; otherwise, it’s just a bunch of rocks. Listening to the stories reveals the deeper meaning 🌾 Jinji Ping Terraced Fields Park | The earth’s fingerprint is spectacular 28 square kilometers of dryland terraced fields, layered like the fingerprints of the earth. I visited in July when the crops were lush green, spreading layer by layer from the foot to the top of the mountain—truly magnificent. Standing on Viewing Platform No. 1 looking down, the curves of the terraces are especially graceful. The sunlight creates shifting shadows; I could have watched for half an hour and still not gotten enough. In spring, the hills are covered with peach and apricot blossoms; in autumn, the fields turn golden. I heard it’s even more beautiful then. A pot costs 88 RMB, enough for 3 people. 3. Jiaotuan: A specialty snack from Guyuan made with cornmeal, topped with sour soup and chili oil. Smooth and glutinous, very appetizing, 10 RMB per bowl. 4. The Sumiyama Grottoes: a long history, the brilliance of art In addition to Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Maiji Mountain Grottoes, there are many large and small grottoes on the Silk Road, they also record the dynasties of Buddhism The interpretation of the sculpture and the craftsmanship of the sculptures, the name of the Buddha's proverb "Sumi", is one of the main representatives. Sumiyama Grottoes is the largest Buddhist cave in Ningxia. It is located in Guyuan, the important town of the ancient Silk Road. The scenery here combines the unique beauty of the northwest. There are more than 150 existing caves in the Sumi Mountain, widely distributed in the Sumi Mountain. Various hills. Mishan Grottoes can be divided into several large areas according to location: Dafolou District, Zisungong District, Yuanguangsi District, Xiangguosi District, Taohuadong District, Songshuo District, Three Kiln Districts, Heishigou Area. Because of the time relationship, we chose a more classic area. Along the way, looking far away, the large and small grotto layers are stacked like a beehive. Walking in the mountains is like this, looking very close, but walking far. The caves have been preserved so far, and most of them have been incomplete. There are only 70 carved statues in the caves, of which more than 20 are more complete. The Buddha is very spectacular. You can climb the stairs and visit the Big Buddha at a close distance. In the distance, there are canyons, red rocks, green vegetation, and slow flowing water, which are more magnificent under the blue sky and white clouds.

Some cities are just like that: you don't have high expectations before you go, but by the time you leave, you're already checking return tickets. I've visited these eight cities myself and heard them praised repeatedly; I've almost never had a bad experience. 1. Anshan | Liaoning Qianshan was the most unexpected highlight of my trip to Northeast China. The mountains aren't very high, but the peaks are rugged, and the temples are embedded in the rock faces, making the hike anything but boring. ⏰ I recommend entering the mountain before 8:00 AM. It's less crowded, the light is soft, and you'll reach Wuliangguan just in time for a break. 📍 For the Jiabianshi (Narrow Stone) path above Wuliangguan, friends with a larger build really need to turn sideways to pass—don't try to force it. 🚄 A taxi from Anshan Station to the main gate of Qianshan costs about CNY 40. There are direct buses, but they are slow. It's suitable for families with average stamina; the cable car can save you half the effort. ⚠️ Don't be impulsive about buying the wild hazel mushrooms sold at the foot of the mountain; the prices are inflated. If you really want to buy some, go to the farmers' market in the city. 2. Huizhou | Guangdong Huizhou is an underrated contender. The West Lake is free, and it takes about two hours to walk around. It's no wonder Su Dongpo lived here for three years. ⏰ Go to the foot of Sizhou Pagoda in the evening to watch the sunset; the lake surface is gilded with gold, and it looks great in photos no matter who takes them. 📍 Zhuwu Lane hides quite a few small eateries. Eat the Hengli rice noodle soup while it's hot; it gets fishy when it cools down. Luofu Mountain deserves a full day on its own. The climb from Chongxu Ancient Temple to Feiyun Peak is significant, so take the cable car if you have bad knees. Xunliao Bay is a different experience—the sand is fine, but it's packed on weekends. ⚠️ At the seafood stalls in Xunliao Bay, ask for the price before ordering so you aren't shocked when the bill comes. 🚄 It's about a one-hour drive from Huizhou South Station to Xunliao Bay; ride-sharing is more convenient than the bus. 3. Hezhou | Guangxi Huangyao Ancient Town is the type of place that, in my mind, hasn't been ruined yet. Bluestone paths, the scent of fermented black beans, old banyan trees—there's commercialization, but it's not annoying. ⏰ The ancient town at 7:00 AM is most like its true self; shops aren't open yet, and there's only the sound of sweeping and birds chirping. 📍 The fermented black bean noodle shop by Dailong Bridge is where locals sit on the doorstep with their bowls. Gupo Mountain is best visited after the rain; the waterfalls are full, and the air is filled with the damp scent of plants. For sunrise at Dongtan Ridge, you have to wake up early; the mountain roads are winding, so drive slowly if you're self-driving. ⚠️ The free photo and keychain scam in the ancient town always ends with them trying to get you to buy large prints. It's worth staying overnight; don't try to do a round trip in one day. 4. Baoding | Hebei Baoding is a place where the attractions are scattered, but every one of them is solid. The pine forests and stone statues at the Western Qing Tombs make you feel like you've traveled back in time, and it's so empty you'll wonder if you're in the wrong place. ⏰ The light after 3:00 PM hits the glazed tiles, showing their truest colors. 📍 The sacred path of the Tai Tomb is best walked slowly; don't take the sightseeing cart, or you'll miss many details. Baishi Mountain and Yesanpo should be scheduled separately; the former is for peaks and plank roads, the latter for water activities and rafting. Anxin Baiyangdian is only worth visiting in summer when the lotus flowers are in bloom; other seasons are a bit plain. ⚠️ The glass plank road at Baishi Mountain has an extra fee; if you're afraid of heights, don't force it. 🚄 It's about an hour and a half from Baoding East Station to the Western Qing Tombs; self-driving or chartering a car is recommended. 5. Yingtan | Jiangxi Longhu Mountain is the kind of place that sounds hardcore but is actually very gentle. Danxia landforms paired with the Luxi River—once you're on a bamboo raft, the mountain shapes on both banks really come to life. ⏰ Take the bamboo raft in the morning for better lighting; the water is clear and bright. In the afternoon, you'll be shooting against the light, and the mountains will look dark. 📍 The Tianshi Mansion in Shangqing Ancient Town is worth a close look; don't just take a photo at the gate and leave. There are two hanging coffin performances a day; check the time in advance, or you'll only see the backs of people's heads if you arrive late. It's suitable for bringing elderly people; the bamboo rafts are stable, and there isn't much walking. ⚠️ Be cautious with consecration spending in the scenic area; don't get swept up in the sales pitch. 🚄 There is a dedicated line from Yingtan North Station to Longhu Mountain, taking about half an hour. 6. Chuxiong | Yunnan Chuxiong is the one whose light is overshadowed by Dali and Lijiang. The Yuanmou Earth Forest looks like an alien landscape; the Wumao Earth Forest is even wilder—when the wind blows, sand from the earth pillars falls down with a rustle. ⏰ Enter the Earth Forest an hour before sunset; the shadows lengthen, and the colors shift from yellow to red. 📍 There are many forks in the road in Wumao Earth Forest; follow the signs and don't wander off. The Yi Ancient Town is lively at night, especially around the Torch Festival. If you go at other times, just have a mushroom hot pot, browse the craft shops, and slow down your pace. ⚠️ There's no shade in the Earth Forest, so you must bring a hat and water. It's best for self-driving; public transport is a hassle. 🍜 The roasted pig trotters outside the ancient town are half the price of those on the main street. 7. Guyuan | Ningxia The Xumishan Grottoes were the biggest surprise of this trip. The statues from the Northern Wei to Tang dynasties have weathered, but that quiet power is still there. ⏰ Arrive before 10:00 AM; the sunlight shines obliquely into the grottoes, making the outlines of the Buddha statues clearest. 📍 Standing at the foot of the 20-plus-meter-tall Maitreya in the Great Buddha Pavilion and looking up, you'll be speechless. The grottoes are distributed across several hills; it takes two or three hours to walk the whole route, so wear comfortable shoes. It's not crowded, and you'll often have a grotto all to yourself. ⚠️ Do not use flash inside the grottoes; it causes irreversible damage to the murals. 🚄 It's about an hour by taxi from Guyuan Station; I recommend setting aside half a day. 8. Yuncheng | Shanxi Yuncheng Salt Lake—I'd call it God's palette. In the high temperatures of summer, the algae change color—pink, green, yellow—no filter needed. ⏰ July and August are the best for photos, but the midday sun will peel your skin, so going in the evening is just right. 📍 There are black mud flats by the salt lake; they're said to be good for skincare, believe it or not. The salt lake itself is free, but some experience projects have extra fees, so think carefully before paying. It's suitable as a stopover; making a special trip just for it might feel a bit thin. ⚠️ Don't go into the water barefoot; the salt crystals will prick your feet. 🍜 The mutton paomo and Wenxi boiled cakes in downtown Yuncheng are more authentic than what you'll find around the scenic area. Tickets are around CNY 70; check official announcements for the daily price. 02 Xiamen | Fujian Gulangyu Island limits visitor numbers on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, so book your ferry tickets through official channels 3 days in advance. I recommend booking the earliest ferry to arrive on the island at 7:30 AM, before Longtou Road gets packed with tour groups. The Railway Culture Park is my favorite walking route in Xiamen. Abandoned tracks have been turned into a trail lined with wild bougainvillea. The full route takes 40 minutes and is perfect for a leisurely stroll with elderly family members. Nanputuo Temple and the Botanical Garden can be combined into a half-day trip. ⏰ Enter Nanputuo at 4:00 PM, buy 2 boxes of vegetarian cakes as souvenirs, and then enter the Botanical Garden directly from the back mountain gate to save on an admission ticket. 📍 The mist in the Botanical Garden's rainforest area turns off at 5:00 PM, so don't go too late. ⚠️ Always ask for prices before ordering at seafood stalls on Gulangyu Island; price gouging during the Mid-Autumn Festival happens every year. If you're staying overnight, choose the area near Zhongshan Road for easy access to both the ferry terminal and the city center. 03 Nantong | Jiangsu Haohe River is the moat of Nantong, circling the old city. The riverside trail is about 10 kilometers long, so just walk sections if you get tired. 📍 The stretch from Haoxi Academy to the Cultural Palace is the most comfortable, with dense shade and plenty of benches—perfect for strollers. 🍜 If you're hungry, go to Nandajie Street for a bowl of "fire dumplings" (huojiao) with tofu pudding. The osmanthus flowers bloom around the Mid-Autumn Festival, making the air along the Haohe River sweet. ⚠️ Boat ticket prices differ between day and night, with night tickets costing twice as much. Walking along the bank is actually more relaxing. This is perfect for people who don't want to rush between attractions and just want a place to zone out. 04 Zibo | Shandong Zhoucun Ancient Commercial City is about more than just barbecue. The former site of Ruifuxiang and the "No Tax Today" stele on the main street are worth a stop. ⏰ Arrive before 9:00 AM when shops are just opening; the stone-paved streets are empty, so you won't have to dodge crowds for photos. Sesame seed cakes are best when freshly baked. 📍 Look for the stall with a line out front—that's the one. They cost CNY 3 each and are thin, crispy, and savory. I bought 10 to take home; 10 seconds in the microwave makes them crispy again. The ancient city isn't large and can be seen in 2 hours. It gets crowded on Mid-Autumn Festival afternoons, so I suggest leaving before noon. ⚠️ Folk performances inside charge extra; they are optional, so don't feel pressured. 🍜 For lunch, head to Zhangdian District for Boshan cuisine. Tofu boxes and "suguo" (braised assorted dishes) are local specialties, completely different from barbecue. This is perfect for those who are wary of commercialized ancient towns but are willing to make the trip for a good meal. 05 Anqing | Anhui Tianzhu Mountain is in Qianshan, Anqing, about a 1.5-hour drive from the city center. It's perfect for hiking during the Mid-Autumn Festival—not too cold, not too hot. ⏰ Take the first cable car up at 7:00 AM to see the peak before the clouds and mist disperse. The stairs in the Mysterious Valley are narrow; larger visitors may need to turn sideways to pass. ⚠️ Wear non-slip shoes; the mountain has heavy dew in October, making the stone steps slippery. If you have bad knees, take the cable car to the top and stick to the flat loop trails. 📍 Liandan Lake is on the mountain; the water is a dark, deep green, rippling in the wind. Bring a light jacket, as the temperature difference between the summit and the base is 7–8 degrees. 🍜 After coming down, go to Qianshan County for braised pork with sweet potato starch balls.
