📅 Nagoya-->Takayama-->Hida-->Kamikochi Itinerary Day 1: For this trip, we flew out of Incheon Airport in South Korea at 07:30 AM and touched down at Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) at 09:30 AM. We booked a vehicle with Travel Car Rent for the entire journey. After clearing customs around 10:30 AM, we picked up our rental car at 11:00 AM. On our way to our accommodation in Takayama, we passed through Nagoya, so we took a detour to explore Nagoya Castle before continuing to the Chisun Grand Takayama Hotel. Day 2: Today's plan was to go location hunting in Hida, snapping photos of real-life spots featured in the anime "Kimi no Na wa" (Your Name), and just strolling around the town. Day 3: We spent the entire day exploring Kamikochi, especially since we didn't get there until the afternoon. The drive from Takayama took about an hour. We parked at the Akandana Parking Lot and then transferred to a bus (taxis are also an option) to enter the national park. Parking costs 600 yen per day, and this lot is super convenient because it's the very first stop on the bus route. The round-trip bus fare is 2,800 yen per person. A one-way ticket is 1,500 yen. You could buy a one-way ticket, but we went ahead and got round-trip tickets since they offer flexible return times—you can head back whenever you want before service ends. Just a heads-up, the last bus leaves Kamikochi at 05:30 PM! We hopped on the bus and got off at the Taisho Pond stop first. From there, we enjoyed a leisurely 5km scenic walk, taking plenty of photos along the way until we reached the Kappa Bridge. After soaking in the stunning natural beauty and taking more pictures, we simply caught the bus back. The trail is really easy and makes for a super relaxing hike! Day 4: On our final day, we took a late morning stroll around Takayama before checking out. Afterward, we returned our rental car and caught our evening flight back to South Korea. 🏨 Accommodation Recommendation: Chisun Grand Takayama Hotel. It's spotless, super convenient, and close to both the train station and plenty of restaurants. The staff is wonderfully friendly and the service is top-notch. Note: If you're driving, parking at the hotel isn't free; it costs 1,000 yen per day. 🍴 Dining Recommendation: HAMA SUSHI! Plates start at just 100 yen. My husband and I absolutely feasted on sushi—it was incredibly satisfying and such a great deal. It's also super popular with the locals! If you're a sushi lover, I highly recommend checking it out; you won't be disappointed. We actually ended up going two days in a row! 🤣🍣 Hours: 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM.

I know I'm pretty late to the party since it blew up years ago. I'm not exactly sure why I wanted to come here so badly, but I just had to squeeze Hida-Furukawa into my itinerary. While researching the route, I realized I had to pass through Takayama anyway. It's a super famous city, but I had never included it in my plans before. This time, I planned to head down from Shirakawa-go and spend the night in Takayama so I'd have time to explore in the morning. It was freezing cold on the day I arrived because of a light snowfall, which I could tell from the white patches of unmelted snow. Instead of sticking to my original plan of exploring Takayama in the morning, I decided to head straight to Hida-Furukawa. Hida-Furukawa is a small, quiet town. You can pretty much cover the whole place with a one-hour walk. If you're into vintage vibes and history, you should definitely try to fit this town into your travel plans. The canals around the town are filled with massive koi fish swimming about. Since it wasn't quite full-blown winter yet when I visited, the local authorities hadn't relocated the fish for the season. The local shrines still feature traditional wooden architecture, having been carefully restored over time rather than completely rebuilt. Even the train station retains its classic look with its original wooden structure intact. As for the iconic spot featured in the anime, the local authorities have been super cooperative. They keep that specific window open and even set up a photo stand for visitors to pose on. Plus, there are maps available in multiple languages. Feeling hungry and wanting to make it back to Takayama by 2 PM, I stopped by a soba shop... not one of the highly recommended ones (I just liked the storefront and was too lazy to keep walking). Besides its famous Hida beef, Hida-Furukawa is also known for its herbs. The sign out front claimed that their dishes are primarily made with local herbs. Thanks to the massive hype around "Kimi no Na wa" a few years ago, tourist brochures and restaurant menus are available in English, making it incredibly easy to navigate. If you're an indie traveler who isn't just checking off mainstream tourist traps, I highly recommend coming here to take a deep breath of the fresh, pure air.

Once you pass through the ticket gates, head toward the East Exit. Walk straight down Ekimae Chuo-dori (the main street right in front of the exit) for about 10 minutes, and you'll find yourself in the historic old town area. Along the way, the streets are lined with an array of enticing spots. You'll find Hida soba noodle shops, liquor stores offering sake tastings, and traditional Japanese and Japanese BBQ (Yakiniku) restaurants where you can savor local Takayama ramen and top-tier Hida beef at incredibly reasonable prices. You can also sip on carefully roasted artisan coffee while gazing at the beautiful snowmelt waters flowing down the Miyagawa River. You're bound to discover coffee shops that are even more wonderful than you imagined. Exploring local sake breweries for tours and tastings, grazing on a wide variety of street-food sweets, and hunting for the perfect travel souvenirs at local gift shops are just a few of the many highlights to enjoy. Starting at 8:00 AM the next morning, you can buy freshly pounded mochi and freshly picked fruits at the morning market in front of Takayama Jinya. Alternatively, head over to the Miyagawa Morning Market to enjoy freshly squeezed milk, grilled dango (sweet dumplings), or grab a bite from a cute onigiri (rice ball) stand for a lovely riverside breakfast. Since the town is beautifully compact, you can easily explore everything on foot. I highly recommend a fantastic trip to Hida Takayama!
