And then there is Annapurna Base Camp, where you walk for days until the mountains are no longer somewhere on the horizon. They are surrounding you. 🥹🇳🇵 Sitting at around 4,130 meters / 13,550 feet, Annapurna Base Camp is one of Nepal’s most iconic trekking destinations and one of those places where the final view feels completely different because you had to earn it one step at a time. No cable car. No quick viewpoint stop. Just villages, forests, stone staircases, suspension bridges, cold mornings, teahouses and mountains getting bigger every single day. 🥾 The journey is what makes ABC special The destination is spectacular, but the trek itself is the real experience. You usually begin much lower in the Annapurna region, where the landscape feels green and almost tropical. There are farms. Terraced hillsides. Small settlements. Forests. Rivers. Then gradually, everything changes. The air gets cooler. The vegetation becomes thinner. The valley gets narrower. And the snowy peaks that seemed impossibly far away suddenly start towering directly above you. That transformation is one of the reasons ABC is so memorable. But I think the moment would mean much more after the trek. Your legs are tired. Your clothes probably smell suspicious. You’re cold. You’ve climbed more stairs than you ever want to discuss again. 😭 And somehow none of that matters. Because behind the sign is one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in Nepal. That photo isn’t just proof that you reached 4,130 meters. It represents every kilometer before it. 🌄 Wake up for sunrise. Seriously. If the weather cooperates, one of the highlights of staying around base camp is seeing the mountains around sunrise. The first light slowly reaches the highest peaks. Grey turns pink. Pink becomes orange. Then the entire landscape begins glowing while the valley is still freezing cold. This is one occasion where I would willingly accept an alarm before sunrise. 😂 Bring layers. Bring gloves. Take the photo. Then put your phone away for a few minutes. Some places deserve at least one moment without looking through a screen. 🛖 Teahouse trekking is part of the Nepal experience ABC isn’t normally a wilderness camping expedition for most trekkers. You travel through settlements and stay in teahouses or trekking lodges along the route. They’re generally simple rather than luxurious. A room. A bed. A place to eat. Somewhere to warm up. Maybe a hot shower depending on the stop and facilities. After hours of hiking, that starts feeling luxurious enough. 😂 The dining room also becomes part of the experience. Trekkers from completely different countries sit around eating, checking tomorrow’s weather and discussing how many stairs everyone survived that day. 🍚 Dal bhat becomes your best friend You will burn a LOT of energy trekking. This is where dal bhat starts making complete sense. Rice. Lentils. Vegetables. Pickles. Simple, filling and exactly what you want after walking for hours. You’ll also find dishes such as noodles, soups, potatoes, fried rice and momo at many trekking lodges. But remember: The higher you go, the harder it is to transport supplies. Food becomes more expensive. Menus may become simpler. And suddenly that cup of hot tea feels worth absolutely everything. 🌬️ 4,130m is serious altitude ABC is accessible compared with some of Nepal’s highest trekking routes, but 4,130 meters is still high altitude. Don’t treat it like a normal hill walk. Altitude affects everyone differently. You can be young, athletic and extremely fit and still feel symptoms. The important thing is to ascend at a sensible pace, stay hydrated and pay attention to how your body responds. Headache, unusual fatigue, nausea, dizziness or worsening symptoms should never become something you simply “push through” because base camp is close. The mountain isn’t going anywhere. Your safety matters more than the photo. 🗓️ How long should you allow? ABC itineraries vary considerably depending on your starting point, trekking speed and whether you combine the route with places such as Ghorepani and Poon Hill. Some trekkers complete shorter versions in around a week, while more relaxed itineraries can take longer. Personally, I’d rather give the trek an extra day than turn every morning into: “Okay, we need to walk faster.” 😭 The Himalayas deserve more than a race. Extra time also gives you breathing room for weather, tired legs or simply stopping somewhere beautiful longer than planned. 🌦️ Weather controls the experience This is the Himalayas. Clear skies are never guaranteed. One morning can be perfectly blue. The next might bring cloud, rain or snow depending on altitude and season. That’s why flexibility matters. The mountain you came to photograph could disappear behind cloud for an entire afternoon and then suddenly reveal itself for ten minutes at sunrise. When it happens? You understand why people wait. 🎒 What I’d prioritize packing I wouldn’t try to bring my entire suitcase into the mountains. 😭 For a trek like ABC, think in layers. Good trekking shoes. Warm layers. Waterproof outer layer. Sun protection. Gloves and hat for colder sections. Water bottle. Power bank. Personal medication. Basic first-aid supplies. And something comfortable to change into after trekking. The temperature difference between sunny lower valleys and early mornings near base camp can be huge. Pack for the mountains, not for the weather you felt in Pokhara. 📸 Take photos, but respect the mountains and villages The Annapurna region is not simply one giant trekking attraction. I honestly thought we'd missed our chance to see the mountains glow golden, but wow, waking up this morning was such a pleasant surprise!!! As the sun started coming up, the clouds and mist around the snowy peaks slowly cleared away. When that golden light hit the Annapurna range, our whole group was just speechless - it was that beautiful. Turns out you don't need to do the tough ABC trek to see Machapuchare glow golden 69 Here's a quick rundown of our itinerary (2-Day, 1-Night Chill Trip) (Go backwards for fewer crowds and better views!) Day Pokhara → Aussie Camp → Catch the Sunset · Morning: Sleep in at your Pokhara hotel, grab some breakfast, then head out. · Noon: Grab a jeep or share one to Kande or Dhampus (about 1.5 hours drive), then start your chill hike. · Afternoon: About 1.5-2 hours of hiking gets you to Aussie Camp. The path is mostly flat with gorgeous countryside views along the way. Evening: Check into your guesthouse. There are a few options up there. We stayed at Angels Guest House - that cute red house in the pics. The view of sunrise and sunset right from the door is amazing, and the location is perfect. Plus, you can have a bonfire BBQ in the courtyard at night. · Night: Enjoy a real Nepalese dinner, chat with travelers from everywhere by the fire, and look up at the stunning Milky Way and starry sky! Day Golden Mountain → Head Down → Back to Pokhara · Early Morning: This is the main event! Gotta wake up early! [Super Helpful Tips to Avoid Common Mistakes) Getting Around: Book your jeep up the mountain a day ahead from a travel agency near Phewa Lake in Pokhara. Sharing a ride is the way to go for the best deal. Where to Stay: The guesthouses at Aussie Camp are pretty basic, but they're clean and cozy. Pack a light towel just in case. Cash! Cash! Cash! There's nowhere to get money on the mountain, so bring extra Nepalese Rupees for your room, food, and hot water.
