Here I am in Sapa once again, and I can say I truly know this place inside out. Sapa is a mountainous little town in northern Vietnam and a must-visit destination for many Western tourists. To the Vietnamese, it holds a place in their hearts somewhat similar to our Lijiang or Dali. But for those from Yunnan, it's ridiculously close. You just take the bullet train from Kunming to Hekou, cross the border into Lao Cai, Vietnam, and catch a 40-minute bus ride to Sapa. If you're coming from elsewhere, taking a bus from Hanoi is the easiest way. I've already covered how to buy tickets in detail in my previous guides. If you're coming purely for breathtaking scenery, let me manage your expectations first. Its mountains, terraced fields, and seas of clouds look so much like Yunnan that you probably won't be blown away. What really draws me to Sapa is the slow pace of life. You can stroll through the entire town in just two or three hours. There are no mandatory tourist traps; it's more of a place to chill out and do nothing for a few days. Take a walk along Sapa Lake, find a cozy cafe to spend the afternoon, and check out the local markets to see how people live. The culture of the Hmong people (who share the same roots as our Miao ethnic group) is everywhere. You can even find medicinal herbs like Morinda root and Cistanche at the market—so if you have any "special needs," feel free to grab some! The second day is usually dedicated to Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam. Honestly, this is pure luck—when we went up this time, we were completely swallowed by white fog. The ascent is divided into three legs. You can buy a combo ticket for the funicular at the base and the cable car, which is usually cheaper if booked online in advance. Definitely add the WOW PASS; it saves a ton of queuing time during peak seasons. You only need to buy a separate ticket for the final funicular ride to the summit. They also offer packages that include a buffet, but I don't think they're really necessary. There's also the highest-altitude Starbucks in Asia up there. If you collect city mugs, you have to buy them right on the mountain. The Fansipan and Sapa exclusive mugs aren't sold at the Starbucks in town—don't ask me how I found out the hard way. On your way down, you could visit Cat Cat Village, though I find it quite underwhelming. I'd highly recommend hiking through Lao Chải and Tả Van instead. There are plenty of scenic cafes along the trail, which feels much more relaxing than hunting for viral photo spots. As for purely artificial attractions like Moana, I sincerely suggest you skip them altogether. 🍽 These are the absolute best places to eat: 🍜 Bun Cha at Bún Chả Nga Cảnh, 50K a bowl. It’s different from the dipping style in Hanoi—this one is a noodle soup, but it's just as incredibly savory. 🍲 For Vietnamese hotpot, head to Nhà Hàng H’Mông, located right next to MIXUE, and it's always packed with locals. 🍢 For late-night BBQ, go straight to the lakeside and look for Hoa Phéo Nướng Ngon, just aim for the spot with the biggest crowd. My absolute must-order is the grilled meat wrapped in mustard greens—it's seriously addictive. 🍕 Don't miss the street-side Vietnamese pizza made with grilled spring roll wrappers, I honestly haven't seen it much anywhere else in Vietnam. ☕️ For coffee, you can't go wrong with Cộng or aha, these chains are super consistent, so you won't be disappointed. As for Taste of Vietnam, which many people recommend, I actually thought it was pretty basic. When you visit Sapa, the right mindset is everything. Do not treat this like a military-style trip trying to check off "must-see attractions." Think of it as a temporary escape—an exotic, secluded getaway where you can slow down and watch the mist drift through the streets. Otherwise, after all the hassle of getting here, you'll probably just mutter, "Is that it?"
