Prepare quick-dry long sleeves and windproof jackets for kids. Avoid pure cotton clothes to prevent chills from sweat. Quick-dry or sports pants are recommended; no jeans. Longling County, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province, is located in the southern section of the Hengduan Mountains in western Yunnan (24°27′N, 98°45′E). It is the only county in China that simultaneously hosts the "Western Yunnan Anti-Japanese War Site Group" and the "Gaoligong Mountain Fir-Long-cone Fir Vertical Forest Belt." Geographically, it sits at the intersection of the Nujiang Fault Zone and the Longling-Ruili Fault, with elevations ranging from 1100 to 3000 meters, forming a rare "triple time fold": 🔹 Surface layer: The well-preserved Longling section of the Burma Road (hand-chiseled stone road from 1938), with the roadbed embedded with mule hoofprints and artillery shell scratches from that era; 🔹 Forest layer: The cloud forest belt of the Gaoligong Mountain foothills, home to the densest population of giant rhododendrons (Rhododendron protistum var. giganteum) in China, with the largest trunk diameter of 3.3 meters and a flowering period of only 28 days; 🔹 Underground layer: The underground tunnel system of the Songshan Battle peak (1.2 kilometers long), with rock walls seeping natural sulfur particles, humidity consistently above 94%, nurturing unique glowing moss (Schistostega pennata) that emits a faint blue light in the dark, known by veterans as the "Songshan Fireflies." One-day light trip|Budget ¥393 (strictly under ¥400) Transportation|¥55 From Baoshan Bus Station, take the Longling special line (¥30), then charter a car to Lameng Town’s Songshan battlefield site (¥25/person, including guide + thermal imaging night vision experience) Admission|¥0 ✅ Songshan Anti-Japanese War Site is a national patriotic education base, free to enter (scan QR code to register as a "Western Yunnan Monument Guardian") ✅ Core experiences|¥332 Early morning "Stone Road Morning Light Class" (6:50–7:45): Walk along the 1938 Burma Road, use a laser rangefinder to scan the depth of mule hoofprints (average 2.7 cm), scan QR code to generate "My Western Yunnan Footprint Map" (including GPS heatmap and historical comparison) Morning "Rhododendron Mist Trail Class" (9:30–11:00): In Songshan Rhododendron Valley, measure giant rhododendron leaves with a portable chlorophyll meter (SPAD value 52.3), receive a "Rhododendron Breathing Handbook" (with AR scanning to observe flowering phenology predictions) Noon "Trench Cooking Class" (12:00–13:00): Inside the restored mother-child fort, enjoy "Burma Road Canned Meal"—charcoal-braised traditionally cured ham, pine needle roasted freshly picked wild mushrooms, mountain spring tea sweetened with rhododendron honey, and receive a "Songshan Taste Coordinate Card" Evening "Tunnel Firefly Moment" (16:55–17:25): Enter the main tunnel with a thermal imaging lamp, quietly observe the faint blue glow of the glowing moss in areas with humidity >94%, scan QR code to generate a "Songshan Night Light Spectrum Postcard" ✅ Total cost breakdown: Transportation ¥55 + Admission ¥0 + Experience dining ¥332 = ¥387 ✅ (¥13 reserved for emergencies) ✅ Essentials: Non-slip shoes (stone road is slippery), long-sleeve quick-dry clothing (tunnel is damp and cold), headlamp (essential for tunnel), thermos (two mountain spring drinking points), fully charged phone (AR scanning requires internet) ⚠️ Prohibited: Striking the stone roadbed, climbing ancient rhododendron trees, touching glowing moss in tunnels, discarding food scraps (which attracts squirrels and damages the site) Bonus: Every day at exactly 16:58, when the thermal imaging lamp scans the third water-seeping rock wall corner in the tunnel, the faint blue glow intensifies briefly due to sulfur crystal resonance, forming a 0.6-second "star trail halo," visible only in thermal imaging mode. When your fingertips touch the mule hoofprints on the stone road from 76 years ago, your nose brushes the mist condensed on rhododendron petals, and your lens freezes the 0.6-second star trail blue glow deep in the tunnel—this place does not rely on popularity to create scenery; it uses the road as history, the flowers as testimony, and the light as memory. By the Nujiang River’s verdant folds, time quietly echoes on every stone.

Western Yunnan Travel Diary 3📔 | Hero City — Tengchong 🪦🪖🚩 During our trip to Tengchong, Yunnan, it happened to be September 18, so we made a special trip to the Dianxi War of Resistance Memorial Hall (a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level — Guoshang Cemetery). Before coming to Tengchong, I mostly thought of hot springs, ancient towns, ginkgo trees, and jade. It wasn't until I walked into the Dianxi War of Resistance Memorial Hall with the crowds that I realized Tengchong has a history that must not be forgotten. Guoshang Cemetery was built in 1945 to commemorate the soldiers of the Chinese Expeditionary Force who died in the Yunnan-Burma campaign. The cemetery was initiated by Mr. Li Genyuan and named after the "Guoshang" chapter of the *Chu Ci*. 🪦 🪦 🪦 The most moving part of the cemetery is the martyrs' tomb complex on Xiaotuan Slope. Amidst the towering pines and cypresses, 3,346 tombstones are arranged radially around a memorial tower, burying the soldiers who died in the Battle of Tengchong and 19 Allied soldiers. In addition, there is the Loyalty Shrine, the Chinese Expeditionary Force Name Wall (Figure 6, engraved with the names of over 100,000 soldiers), and a large relief wall. Led by our guide, we solemnly laid flowers at several tombstones to honor the sacrifices of our predecessors and pay our respects to the martyrs. Our guide is a local from Tengchong. He personally shared their moving stories in front of the statues of Mr. Li Genyuan (Figure 10), General Chennault (Figure 11, right), former County Magistrate Zhang Wende, and a young soldier (Figure 18; there were many child soldiers in the Expeditionary Force, the youngest being only 13). The memorial hall is right next to Guoshang Cemetery. As soon as we entered the exhibition hall, we were struck by the wall of 1,003 steel helmets 🪖 (Figure 5), symbolizing the heroic spirits of the Expeditionary Force soldiers. ——The exhibition covers everything from the rear of the war and the Nujiang River standoff to the counteroffensive in Western Yunnan and the prayer for peace. The museum contains many artifacts from the war: rusty firearms, tattered military uniforms, yellowed letters home, and water bottles and bowls used by the soldiers. Compared to the large weapons, it was these inconspicuous small items that touched me the most. Their owners were ordinary people, also someone's son, husband, or father. They might have originally just wanted to live a good life, but they went to the battlefield when the country was in danger. After visiting the memorial hall, you can continue into the adjacent Guoshang Cemetery. The Loyalty Shrine, Xiaotuan Slope, and the rows of tombstones are all very quiet. Walking up the over 100 steps and seeing so many densely packed names, my heart suddenly felt heavy. These people are no longer just a casualty number, but real lives that once existed. What touched me most about this visit is that commemorating history is not about continuing hatred, but about reminding future generations that today's peaceful and ordinary life is actually very precious. If you come to Tengchong, I suggest not just planning for hot springs and ancient towns, but also setting aside two or three hours for this place. It may not be the most relaxing stop, but it is well worth it. ✨Tips: 📍Location: Dianxi War of Resistance Memorial Hall (Guoshang Cemetery), Tengchong City, Yunnan Province 🎫Admission: Free (Closed on Mondays; Open: 9:00 AM–5:00 PM) ⏰Recommended duration: 2–3 hours 🎧Suggestion: Listen to the on-site guide to better understand the complete history 📷Note: The atmosphere at the memorial hall and cemetery is solemn; please remain quiet and dress appropriately when visiting 👟Route: Visit the memorial hall first, then walk to explore Guoshang Cemetery ⚠️Note: To see the Songshan child soldier statues, you need to go to the Songshan Scenic Area in Longling County, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province

! Last September–October I actually went to Baoshan 5 times 🔥 My friends kept asking if I had relatives there 😂 Truth is, I was just completely hooked. This small western Yunnan city that most people treat as a Tengchong transfer stop won me over with its slow pace and everyday life vibe. After writing for ages, this heartfelt, babysitter-level guide is finally out 👇 🍜 Food recommendations (if it's not good, blame me) Baoshan is seriously an underrated food heaven! For breakfast you must try thick bean flour porridge with er si noodles — the creamy bean paste coats the slippery er si, a local staple since childhood. For a main meal, go straight for huopiao beef (also called copper-ladle beef): beef simmered in a copper pot over charcoal becomes tender and flavorful, and the spicy red broth is so satisfying. Jinji pocket tofu has a soft, springy skin and a burst of savory juice inside; Yongchang da shao (huoshao pork) carries a unique thatch-smoked aroma. Don’t miss Banqiao lafei — it’s basically papaya juice, sweet, tart, and ice-cold, perfect with mortar-pounded cold salads. Lujiangba’s tropical fruit is so cheap it’ll make you cry, and the molten salted duck egg yolk in Fei'e xi bing is incredible. 🏠 Accommodation tips (pick the right area and you’ll save half the hassle) Staying in Longyang old town or around Qinghuahai is most convenient. CNY 140–240 per night, with dining and transport concentrated there. If you want atmosphere, choose a guesthouse on Banqiao Qinglong Street, CNY 180–280 per night — open the window and you’re right on the old street. I recommend staying put for 2 nights to avoid moving around. Driving to Lujiangba or Tengchong is easy. 🗺️ Itinerary (3-day, 2-night lazy version) Day 1: Old town stroll → morning Taibaoshan Forest Park (free! hike to the top for a city view) → noon head to the old town for huopiao beef → afternoon walk Banqiao Qinglong Street and the thousand-year-old post road → evening Qinghuahai wetland park for sunset, the lake loop bike ride is amazing Day 2: Nearby discoveries → drive to Lujiangba to check out a coffee estate (origin of small-bean coffee) → noon try Dai-style bao shao → afternoon hike Baihualing rainforest (ticket CNY 30) or go see Asia’s largest banyan tree Day 3: Easy return → morning visit Renshoumen ancient city ruins → noon have Yongchang huoshao pork → pick up some small-bean coffee as souvenirs 📸 Photo spots (everywhere is wallpaper-worthy) Qinghuahai Yongchang Pavilion at sunset is stunning; the reflection of the Wenbi Pagoda on Taibaoshan is beyond photogenic; the banyan groves at Lujiangba feel like Southeast Asia; Donghu Park in the early morning mist is otherworldly; in Sep–Oct Longling rice paddy park turns golden; if you catch the Longjiang rice-and-fish festival you can try catching fish. ⚠️ Pitfall tips (lessons learned the hard way) ❌ Rainy season is Sep–Oct and showers can come suddenly, bring an umbrella and wear non-slip shoes ❌ Big temperature swings between morning and night (12–22°C), a light jacket is essential ❌ Strong UV — wear sunscreen even on cloudy days ❌ Don’t buy overpriced shihu (dendrobium) herbs from roadside vendors ❌ Buy coffee at official estate shops ❌ Stay away from cheap roadside day tours and jade sales pitches ❌ Mountain roads are winding and can cause motion sickness, bring medication Baoshan is perfect for people who want to escape the crowds and spend a few quiet days. Prices are low, the pace is slow, the food is delicious, and the autumn scenery in Sep–Oct is stunning and not crowded. I really wrote this from the heart — if you find it useful, give it a ❤️ and save it

The lingering impact of Lugu Lake is just too strong. After leaving, my enthusiasm for continuing the trip has faded. It feels like having just seen a peerless beauty, and I have no interest in glancing at anyone else. So, I decided to end this full month of travel in Yunnan right here. If I had the chance to vote for a provincial travel ranking: Yunnan is No. 1, Jiangxi is No. 2, and Sichuan is No. 3. Yunnan offers the best diversity in travel and outstanding scenery, while Jiangxi wins with its vast array of distinct mountain peaks. As for Sichuan, that laid-back lifestyle is truly touching, hehe. Especially this time, I finally cycled around Fuxian Lake, hiked the mysterious Ailao Mountains, saw the statue of the young anti-war hero at Songshan, took a trip to the border in Ruili, felt the roaring waves at Tiger Leaping Gorge, and finally fulfilled my nine-year-delayed promise to visit Lugu Lake. Everything was the most beautiful encounter and the best arrangement.😎 After that, I basically didn't linger on the road and headed straight east. To borrow the words of the newly crowned Best Actress Michelle Wai, "Since we've boarded this train of life, let's just enjoy the scenery along the way." Land of Clouds, I will be back.🫶

In September, Tengchong features high skies, light clouds, and crisp autumn air. Avoiding the summer crowds, with temperatures between 15–25℃, it is the perfect time for a slow-paced stay. This time, I stayed at the Nanjin Hotel (Qiluo Ancient Town Branch), located right across from the 600-year-old Qiluo Ancient Town. The hotel offers spacious 70-square-meter one-bedroom suites with plenty of natural light and in-room hot springs—just turn on the tap for natural geothermal water. Soaking in a private hot spring at night washes away the day's fatigue. The butler service is attentive and thoughtful, making it feel as comfortable as home. Qiluo Ancient Town is more pristine than Heshun and not overly commercialized. At 7:00 AM, the morning market opens right on time—the aroma of thick pea porridge is the first thing to catch your attention. The porridge is slow-cooked until thick and smooth, served with crispy fried dough sticks or grilled rice cakes, and drizzled with bright red chili oil; one bite warms you to the core. Next, try a bowl of Tengchong er-si (rice noodles). Made from local indica rice, they are soft yet chewy, served in a rich, savory bone broth—a breakfast staple for locals. For lunch, you must order "Dajiujia" (stir-fried rice cake). Legend has it that the Yongli Emperor of the Southern Ming Dynasty fled here and ate this to satisfy his hunger, bestowing the name "Dajiujia" (Great Rescue). Sliced rice cakes are stir-fried with ham, eggs, and tomatoes, creating a savory, tangy, and fragrant dish where every bite tells a story. Finally, have a Tengchong earthen pot stew. Slow-cooked in a special local clay pot, it features a base of pork ribs and crispy pork, layered with taro and yam. The broth is rich, and the flavors deepen the longer it simmers. Food is the gentlest way to tell the story of Tengchong. But Tengchong is more than just everyday life. The Guoshang Cemetery is a profound part of this city that cannot be overlooked. Located at the foot of Xiaotuanpo by the Die-shui River in the southwest of the city, it covers 88 mu and was built to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the 20th Group Army of the Chinese Expeditionary Force who recaptured Tengchong in 1944. Mr. Li Genyuan named the cemetery after the "Guoshang" (National Martyr) chapter of the Chu Ci. Walking up the path, the four characters "Bi Xue Qian Qiu" (Eternal Glory) are embedded in the retaining wall of the second terrace. Inside the Loyalty Shrine, 9,618 names are densely carved into the stone tablets—most of them were barely in their twenties when they sacrificed their lives. Climbing Xiaotuanpo, 3,346 volcanic stone tombstones stand like a silent army, quietly overlooking the city they bought with their lives. The cemetery is shaped like a giant bell, symbolizing a "warning bell that rings forever." Every inch of land is stained with the blood of heroes. Leaving the cemetery, my heart remains heavy for a long time. Returning to Nanjin Hotel, I soak in a hot spring to relax my body and let my thoughts settle. In autumn, Tengchong offers earthly comfort on the tongue and the weight of history in the heart—this is perhaps the most moving meaning of a slow-paced stay.

We had it cooked in a clear broth, and the fish was so tender it was almost impossible to pick up with chopsticks. · Dai-style Sa Pie is sour and spicy, incredibly satisfying, and you could easily eat three large bowls with it and soft rice. · Hidden tip: Buy freshly roasted dried rice paddy fish from a local farmer as a snack. 🏡 Accommodation Tips Having gotten used to city hotels, this time we chose the 【Qingmu Garden】 guesthouse next to the tea plantation. Open your window in the morning to a sea of clouds and terraced fields, and at night you can see a starry sky even more dazzling than Kunming's! 📸 Photography Tips · Best lighting on a clear morning between 9-11 am · Remember to report in advance if you're taking aerial photos (it's a border area) · Photos in Dai ethnic costumes on the field ridges are incredibly photogenic! 👗OOTD: Straw hat + long cotton/linen skirt + woven bag (Regret not bringing a reflector!) Compared to the hustle and bustle of Dali and Lijiang, this is a true haven for the soul! 🏡A Healing Rural Trip to Longjiang Village, Baoshan | A Hidden Gem + Stunning Terraced Fields + Dai Elegance Just discovered this treasure village hidden in Longling, Baoshan. 9,000 acres of terraced fields and thousands of acres of tea gardens—every snapshot is a picture-perfect scene! 🚗 Transportation Guide From Kunming, it's recommended to take the high-speed train to Baoshan (2.5 hours) and then rent a car. We recommend staying overnight at the Vienna International Hotel (they offer free pick-up and drop-off from the high-speed rail South Station – so thoughtful!). The next day, drive directly to Longjiang Township (1.5 hours). The Baoteng Expressway has excellent road conditions. 🌾 Must-Visit Spots 1️⃣ Longjiang Rice Paddy Park The terraced fields are most spectacular in October! ⚠️ Pitfall guide 🚨 Baoshan is in the peak rainy season in August. The Baoshan Meteorological Station expects Tengchong and Longling to receive 10%–15% more rainfall than usual. Moderate to heavy rain with localized storms is forecast around August 3–5, 17–19, and 28–30. So "checking the weather before traveling" is no joke—volcanic areas, hot springs, and Beihai Wetland in the mountains may close temporarily or have traffic disruptions during heavy rain. Be sure to monitor short-term forecasts the day before departure. Another tip: street vendors outside the hot springs sell "sulfur soap" and "hot spring water," but it’s hard to tell if they’re genuine. Don’t buy from roadside sellers casually. For soaking in sulfur springs, choose official hot spring spots in the scenic area, such as Dongshan Hot Spring Village (ticket 88 yuan) or the Rehai Bath Valley package (89 yuan). Clear pricing means peace of mind. 👗 Essential outfits 🌂 Daytime temperatures in Baoshan in August range from 26 to 30℃, dropping to around 17℃ at night, with a 10℃ difference between day and night. The outfit formula is simple: a thin T-shirt plus sun protection clothing during the day, and a light jacket in the morning and evening. August is rainy and humid, so a folding umbrella or raincoat is a must-have for Baoshan trips🌧️. Ancient town stone paths and volcanic trails get slippery after rain, so wear shoes with non-slip soles. For light hiking in Gaoligong Mountain, long-sleeve quick-dry shirts and long pants are standard to protect against leeches and scratches from branches. UV rays are strong on the plateau, so start with SPF 50 sunscreen and don’t forget sunglasses and a hat. 🚗 Transportation guide 🛣️ For travelers from other cities, there are two main options: flying directly to Tengchong Tuofeng Airport is the easiest, with daily flights from Kunming, Chongqing, and Chengdu. The airport shuttle costs 20 yuan to the city. If flying to Baoshan Longyang Airport, you’ll need to take a bus to Tengchong, about 2 hours, costing around 60 yuan. Shared rides are 50 yuan per person, and private car rentals are 200 yuan per day. Baoshan to Tengchong attractions are spread out, so renting a car for the whole trip is most comfortable. The market rate for an SUV is 600 yuan per day, including fuel. There are also tourist shuttle lines between the city, Heshun Ancient Town, Rehai, and the volcanic geological park, costing 10–15 yuan one way. Booking airport transfers plus attraction shuttles on Trip.com in advance is cheaper than hailing a ride on site. 🍜 Local cuisine 🥘 Baoshan’s palate is refined by coffee and erkuai (rice cake). Start breakfast with a bowl of thin bean noodle soup or roasted pork rice noodles. For main meals, be sure to try Tengchong dajiujia (ham stir-fried erkuai), clay pot dishes, and huopiao beef. On the snack street, enjoy pounding chicken feet, pocket tofu, and grilled tofu while walking. Dessert lovers shouldn’t miss songhua cake paired with a cup of Baoshan small bean coffee. The nutty aroma instantly explains why this is called the coffee origin. To experience coffee culture, a special trip to Lujianba Xinzai Coffee Village is worth it. Hands-on roasting and cupping start at 50 yuan, much more interesting than drinking trendy coffee in the city. 📸 Must-visit attractions 🏞️ Top recommendation is Tengchong Rehai Scenic Area. The big boiling pot is a 96℃ hot spring bubbling constantly. The 5-yuan hot spring egg is a local signature snack. Tickets plus electric cart cost 65 yuan. Tickets plus Bath Valley hot spring package cost 89 yuan. The combined ticket for Rehai, volcano, and Shenzhu Valley is 128 yuan. Booking all-inclusive on Trip.com is very convenient. Heshun Ancient Town ticket is 55 yuan, valid for 7 days. This 600-year-old overseas Chinese town features rice fields and a library. Wild Duck Lake at 7 AM is as quiet as an ink painting. Beihai Wetland ticket is 55 yuan. Renting a grass raft costs 30 yuan. The floating sensation on the water grassland is magical. The iris blooms in April and May are the most beautiful. In August, the view is lush green. Volcanic geothermal national geological park ticket plus round-trip electric cart is 50 yuan. Hot air balloon rides over the volcano cluster are available from 8 to 11 AM for 280 yuan per person. Flights are canceled if it’s windy, so it depends on luck. Dongshan Grassland ticket is 28 yuan. Sightseeing car package is 45 yuan. The Tea Horse Road relics are well preserved. Horseback riding around costs 65 yuan, great for kids to have fun. Die Shui River Waterfall costs only 10 yuan. It’s in the city and offers roaring rapids, the best value. If you have extra time, Qinghuahai Wetland Park in Longyang District is free to enter. Lake cycling costs 20 yuan per day. Banqiao Qinglong Street’s century-old tea house charges 3 yuan with unlimited refills. This is where the local life vibe is strongest. A three-day, two-night itinerary is just right: Day 1, Longyang Ancient City plus coffee village; Day 2, Rehai plus volcano; Day 3, Heshun Ancient Town plus Beihai Wetland. Before heading back, enjoy a bowl of braised pork erkuai on Qinglong Street. This Baoshan trip won’t be wasted.

Nestled in a mountain basin on the eastern slopes of Gaoligong Mountain, Mengbang Village is hidden among wetlands and ancient forests, far from well-known scenic spots such as Longling Songshan and Banglazhang. Vast marshes and wetlands surround the village, clear springs flow everywhere, rice paddies and lotus ponds intertwine, and bamboo and wooden houses are hidden among the lush shade of fruit trees. The villagers cultivate their land and water, sowing in spring and harvesting in autumn, content with the stable yields of each season, without striving for excessive gains. In the morning, mist shrouds the wetlands, and waterbirds skim the surface; in the afternoon, villagers sit idly in the shade, chatting, as wisps of smoke rise gently from their chimneys—life is peaceful and uneventful. In the world, people are always calculating gains and losses, rejoicing when they gain and feeling depressed when they lose, often bound by advantages and disadvantages, making it difficult to achieve lasting peace. Many things have gains and losses; ups and downs are the norm in life. Excessive attachment to results only traps one in endless internal conflict. The villagers of Mengbang Village never greedily seek to harvest their fill, understanding the importance of doing what they can and accepting the changing seasons with equanimity. Strolling along the wetland paths, watching the clouds and water flow freely, one slowly lets go of calculations. As the setting sun bathes the paddy fields, a sense of clarity washes over one as they depart, a willingness to take a more detached view of temporary gains and losses, neither rejoicing in possession nor grieving over loss, preserving inner peace. Let us brew new tea with newly kindled fire, enjoying poetry and wine while we are young. #NewYearDestinations2026 #travel2026

Because of the news that Japanese guests are not accepted here📰 I remembered the pride and passion of this city🔥 With respect in my heart, I set out to visit Tengchong The moment I stepped into the cemetery🌧 More than 3,000 heavy tombstones stood on the small hill Tears almost broke free when I saw that sea of dragon-scale memorials protecting the nation😭 Here, we were so lucky to meet Grandpa Liao, a 101-year-old war veteran👴 The elderly man had white hair and a youthful face, full of vigor and spirit✨ At that moment, I was so moved I could hardly speak🥹 I kept saying, "Thank you! Within the city, taxis and bikes are convenient. For longer trips between spots, carpooling or private car hire is recommended for better value, freedom, and time savings compared to public transport. 2. 👗Clothing: Baoshan has large temperature differences between morning and night. The mountain and lakeside breezes can be cool, so even in spring and summer, bring a light jacket. Wear comfortable sneakers for mountain hikes and walking. 3. 🎫Tickets: Taibaoshan, Qinglong Street, Qinghuahai, and Baoshan Museum are all free. Hot springs and Heshun ancient town require separate tickets. Booking online in advance is recommended to save waiting time. 4. ⏰Timing: The museum is closed on Mondays, so avoid that day. Visit Rehai in the afternoon to avoid midday heat and enjoy better hot spring experiences. Sunset is the best time for photos at Qinghuahai. 5. 🍜Food: Baoshan’s overall prices are low, with great value for snacks and meals. Must-try local specialties include thin mung bean noodles, fire bucket beef, pocket tofu, and Tengchong rice noodles—no risk of disappointment. 6. 🌿Hiking: The Gaoligong Mountain easy hike requires no special gear and is beginner-friendly. Before stepping into the National Martyrs' Cemetery, I thought I was prepared. I thought history was just the photos on the wall, the old military uniforms in glass cases, the years and numbers spoken by the guide. Until I stood before Xiaotuan Slope— 3,346 tombstones, lined from the foot of the mountain to the top, each engraved with a name, a place of origin, and a unit number. I walked up the stone steps, my pace slowing. The tombstones were small, barely enough to hold a single name. They stood close together, like the shoulder-to-shoulder ranks of soldiers on the march. Sunlight filtered through the trees, falling on the stones, making those names flicker as if they were still breathing. I stopped halfway up the slope. One tombstone read: "Unknown." No name, no place of origin, no unit number. Just these three words and a faint line of numbers. I crouched down and touched the stone. Rain and time had smoothed it, but could not erase the weight of those three words. Suddenly, I wondered: where was this "Unknown" from? How old was he? Did he ever, on some spring morning, walk through the fields of Xishuangbanna just like I did today? He did walk through. But the path he took led to gunfire. Leaving Xiaotuan Slope, I entered the Western Yunnan Anti-Japanese War Memorial. The guide pointed to a row of sculptures and said, "These are child soldiers." The sculptures looked only nine to sixteen years old, barefoot, carrying rifles taller than themselves, their eyes lacking childish innocence, filled instead with a resolve no child should have at that age. I stared at one for a long time—his uniform clearly ill-fitting, sleeves rolled up several times, pants dragging on the ground. Before going to war, did he, like all children, dream of home? It is said that in the entire Western Yunnan counterattack, the Chinese Expeditionary Force suffered nearly 100,000 casualties. Behind these cold numbers lie countless pairs of bare feet treading mountain paths, countless letters home never sent, countless calls of "Mom" lost in the dense forest. Finally, I arrived at the Martyrs' Shrine in the National Martyrs' Cemetery. Four large characters were carved in the center: "Bloodshed Eternal." Standing there, I suddenly recalled the bullet-riddled trenches and shell craters at the Songshan Battle Site. During the grueling 96-day battle, the Expeditionary Force paid the price of 7,773 casualties to annihilate the Japanese army here. Tengchong city was leveled by artillery; the Expeditionary Force took it room by room, advancing an average of only 23 meters per day. Twenty-three meters. Just the length of a basketball court. But beneath every meter lay a person's entire life. As the sun set in the west, I prepared to leave. Winter cherry blossoms bloomed in the cemetery, their pink and white petals falling on the bluestone path, on the tombstones, on the four characters "Bloodshed Eternal." Spring came quietly, just like every year before. On the way back, I saw a Dai child chasing butterflies along the ridge, barefoot, laughing with a clear, bell-like sound. I suddenly thought of those child soldier sculptures—if they had not gone to the battlefield, they would have had children of their own, and in this spring, they would watch flowers bloom, butterflies dance, and children chasing butterflies across the fields. They never truly left. They just carved their names into stone, seeped their blood into the soil, and every spring, through every flower, every leaf, and every child's laughter, they come alive again.
