Merida travel guide and discussion

My impression of Spain was that it’s a country full of relaxation. Until one month before departure, I opened the Alhambra Palace official website and found that every day during the 8 days in Spain was fully booked… Still not giving up, I planned a day in Granada, refreshed the website daily, praying for last-minute tickets, and even purchased a ticket-snatching service. However, even on the morning of the day in Granada, there were no tickets, so I had to drive to Malaga… In Spain, even in winter, popular attractions still require advance booking, and most bookings must be for specific time slots, which is really unfriendly for spontaneous travelers. Although the trip was bumpy, except for failing to get last-minute tickets to the Alhambra Palace, I visited all the other places I wanted to: suddenly wanting to visit the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba in Ronda, no tickets on the official website but managed to buy some; buying a combo ticket at the Church of El Salvador to avoid queuing at Seville Cathedral; encountering a free night session at the Queen Sofía Arts Center… Although I couldn’t visit the Alhambra Palace, the coastal road to Malaga offered breathtaking scenery all along the way. /Day 1/ ✈️ Landed in Madrid at 8 AM, picked up the car at the airport 📷 Mérida: National Museum of Roman Art (P2) - Roman Theatre (P3) 🚗 Madrid to Mérida 🏨 Parador de Mérida /Day 2/ 📷 Mérida: Roman Bridge - Alcazaba Fortress 📷 Seville: Church of El Salvador - Cathedral (P4-5) - Royal Cavalry Club Bullring 🚗 Mérida to Seville 🏨 NH Sevilla Plaza de Armas /Day 3/ 📷 Seville: Royal Alcázar (P6-7) - Plaza de España 🚗 Seville to Ronda 🏨 Catalonia Reina Victoria /Day 4/ 📷 Ronda: Arab Baths - Old Town walk (P8-9) 📷 Córdoba: Mosque-Cathedral (P10-12) 🚗 Ronda to Córdoba to Granada 🏨 NH Collection Victoria /Day 5/ 📷 Malaga: Picasso Museum - Alcazaba Fortress (P13-14) 📷 Granada: Night tour of San Nicolás viewpoint (P15) 🚗 Granada to Malaga to Granada 🏨 NH Collection Victoria /Day 6/ 📷 Consuegra: Castle - Windmills (P16) 📷 Madrid: Bernabéu Stadium (P17) - Queen Sofía Arts Center 🚗 Granada to Consuegra to Madrid 🏨 AC Hotel Atocha /Day 7/ 📷 Madrid: Retiro Park - Prado Museum (P18) 🏨 AC Hotel Atocha /Day 8/ ✈️ Depart at 10 AM

Segovia offers a unique blend of Roman and medieval history, making it a must-see cultural landmark in Spain for travelers interested in history, architecture, and cuisine. Segovia played an important role in Spanish history. It was once a Roman military fortress and later became a Moorish textile center. After being captured by Christians in 1085, it became a royal residence. In 1474, Isabella I was crowned queen of Castile here. This queen achieved great success by uniting Spain through her marriage to King Ferdinand II of Aragon, marking the beginning of the Spanish Empire era. They are known as the Catholic Monarchs. From Madrid, it takes just 1 hour and 20 minutes by bus, making it an easy trip you shouldn’t miss. 😀 Recommended travel times Departure 8:30 AM–9:50 AM Return 2:00 PM–3:20 PM Tour duration Allow 4–5 hours to explore the old town, plus 1 hour for a full meal 😁 Highlights of the old town 😋 Roman aqueduct Walking from the bus station to the old town, you’ll spot this famous Roman aqueduct from afar. This massive structure divides Segovia in two and is known locally as the “Gate of Heaven.” Roman aqueducts remain in other parts of Spain, such as Mérida on the Silver Road. But in terms of scale and grandeur, Segovia’s aqueduct is unparalleled, making it one of the most spectacular Roman Empire relics in Spain. As the saying goes, “water flows downhill, people move uphill.” The aqueduct’s most remarkable feature is that it transports water from a low source to a higher elevation through a complex, gravity-driven system without any mechanical power. Back then, the high water demand came mainly from Roman public baths, fountains, and private homes, which led to the invention and use of the elevated aqueduct. Indeed, material needs shape city construction, while spiritual needs guide architectural style. 😋 Segovia cathedral Located beside a narrow rocky ridge, the old town is dominated by the cathedral’s tall tower. The cathedral’s 88-meter bell tower is the most prominent feature in the old town. Ancient civilizations worldwide expressed their longing for the sky through tall buildings. Seeing a towering structure ahead naturally brings a sense of calm, which is quite remarkable. Segovia cathedral is the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain and is known as the “Lady of Cathedrals.” Its exterior is striking. From the plaza in front, the full view stands out compared to the many smaller churches you’ve passed along the way. Thirty-five spires and stone floral wreaths decorate the cathedral with exquisite detail. Altar and chapels The main altar and 20 smaller altars each feature unique carvings. Cloister The cathedral’s cloister blends Christian church and mosque architectural styles. Similar examples can be found in the cathedrals of Toledo and Ávila. Art collection The cathedral’s underground space has been converted into a small art gallery, showcasing exquisite religious paintings. 😋 The Alcázar castle inspired Disney’s “Snow White castle” design

Walking into this place, football screenings are probably the last thing you'd expect. The venue feels far more like an upscale cocktail bar than a typical sports spot, which is exactly why the experience ended up being such a pleasant surprise. With the FIFA season in full swing, they’ve added live match screenings, and somehow the combination works remarkably well. Instead of the usual loud and crowded sports-bar atmosphere, you get to enjoy the game in a much more comfortable and stylish setting while still sharing the excitement with fellow fans. What really sets the experience apart is the quality of the drinks. The cocktails are thoughtfully crafted, and when paired with match-day promotions or happy hour deals, the value becomes even better. Watching a big game here feels different from the standard football outing—it’s more relaxed, more refined, and honestly more enjoyable than we expected. For anyone looking to catch a match without sacrificing good drinks and a comfortable atmosphere, this is definitely a place worth checking out on game days. #bestplacestowatchfootball

Bar Nevado is a beautifully designed venue with a unique open-air courtyard layout and a central bar that immediately catches your attention. It’s not just a place for drinks either they also serve coffee and great food, making it a versatile spot that works well at any time of day. The overall setting is stylish, welcoming, and easily one of the better-looking places to spend an afternoon or evening. With the FIFA season underway, they’ve also made space for live match screenings, which has turned out to be a great addition for football fans. Many matches take place during the daytime, and that conveniently overlaps with their match-day promotions, making food and drinks much more affordable than usual. After trying a few different venues for watching football and hanging out with friends, this ended up being one of our favorite spots. The atmosphere, value, and overall experience came together really well, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that the place is absolutely gorgeous too. #bestplacestowatchfootball

This is a great café-bar that works really well throughout the day. In the daytime, it functions as a calm coffee shop, but by evening it transitions into a lively bar with a strong local crowd and a much more energetic atmosphere. The food is already tried and tested, with a solid reputation for consistency. The only newer addition is that they’ve started showing live match screenings. Unlike many other places that host screenings but tend to overcharge or serve underwhelming food, this spot manages to keep things balanced. It’s a great place to arrive a bit early during happy hours, enjoy good food at reasonable prices, and then settle in as fans gather for the match. From a food and overall experience perspective, it’s definitely one I would highly recommend. #footballmatchfoodmap

In Extremadura, Spain, time seems to slow down. Half of it is the grandeur of ancient Rome, and the other half is the rich romance of wine. Extremadura means "border" in Spanish. Valencia Cathedral (Catedral de València), located in the heart of Valencia, Spain, is one of the city's most famous landmarks. The cathedral's main facade is in the Gothic style, featuring pointed arches, intricately carved rose windows (circular windows), and a soaring bell tower—all typical Gothic characteristics. Its facade design is solemn and exquisite, representing a significant example of medieval Gothic architecture. Construction began in the 13th century, and during its long construction process, it incorporated Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles. The site was originally a Roman temple and an Arab mosque, reflecting the evolution of architectural art across different historical periods. Architectural and Interior Features: A fusion of diverse styles: While the main structure is Gothic, the interior decoration, such as the main altar area, presents a magnificent Baroque style. Marble columns, gilded reliefs, and colorful domes create a solemn and intricate atmosphere. Key Relics: As the cathedral of Valencia, the Chapel of the Holy Grail houses a jade chalice, traditionally believed to have been used by Jesus at the Last Supper, and is its most famous artifact. Migrete Bell Tower: This 51-meter-high octagonal bell tower, attached to the cathedral, was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and is one of the city's symbols. Visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views of the city. Construction of the cathedral began in 1262, with the main structure completed in 1426. It underwent expansions and restorations over the centuries. During restoration work in 2004, 15th-century Renaissance frescoes covered by Baroque vaults were discovered at the main altar, further enriching its artistic value. The church was originally the ancient Roman Temple of Diana, the moon goddess. During the Moorish rule, it was converted into a mosque. After the Christian reconquest in 1238, construction began in 1262 and the main structure was completed in 1426. Subsequent expansions and restorations during the Renaissance and Baroque periods were also carried out. During restoration in 2004, 15th-century Renaissance frescoes that had been covered were discovered. The square where the church is located is in the heart of Valencia's old town, surrounded by historical buildings, showcasing the city's historical heritage and modern vitality.

Spain Westward Journey ~ Merida The Roman colony of Emerita Augusta shows us this through this monumental civil engineering project: the Aqueduct of Miracles, which was built in the 1st century BC. To supply the different parts of the urban complex, water is taken from the Proserpina reservoir and it is here that this distribution is carried out in the so-called "water towers", saving the depressions of the Albaregas River. Its slender arches and original granite design combined with brick give it a unique character. #NovemberDestinations2024 #SpainTravel

Traveling westward in Spain ~ Merida The church dates from the 13th century and was built on the walls of an old building from Roman times immediately after the Christian reconquest of the city. During the excavation of the church's interior, false ceilings and supports were installed so that the discovered Roman-era burial chambers, walls and foundations could be seen. There is an admission fee to both the excavation and the church. But both are worth seeing. #NovemberGood Places 2024 #SpainTravel

Spain Westward Journey ~ Merida Located on Sagasta Street, it is part of a larger complex and is all that remains of the portico of the old Municipal Forum of Augusta Emerita. It is very close to the Temple of Diana, open-air and free. Like most Roman ruins it is magnificent. It was the entrance to the Piazza del Comune, where civil affairs were discussed and the gods of the Roman Pantheon were worshipped, and it has Corinthian columns and historical sculptures. One of the places worth visiting and taking photos. #NovemberDestinations2024 #SpainTravel

Spain Westward Journey ~ Merida You will get this feeling when walking through Merida and suddenly you see an impressive and majestic Roman era temple, there are ruins all over the city but apart from the Roman theater and the bridge, this will be one of the best preserved, although you imagine its splendor and few remains. So if you’re in town, don’t miss it. #NovemberDestinations2024 #SpainTravel

Spain Westward Journey ~ Merida The Arch of Trajan in Merida is only worth visiting if you are already passing through the area or if you plan to have a drink in one of the two bars next door. This is an interesting historical site but the visit was quick and there wasn't much to explore other than admiring its structure. This is the ideal place to take a short break and enjoy the atmosphere of the nearby bars. #NovemberDestinations2024 #SpainTravel

Spain Westward Journey ~ Merida Very large Roman house, which preserves parts of mosaics, some paintings, bathrooms and different rooms. The route through the walkway gives you a great view of the grounds, which despite the cover protection are well lit. This is one of the unforgivable visits to Merida. Use the combined ticket to enter the historic site. The columbarium is a walking distance from the house and has different urns on display along with several funerary buildings. #NovemberDestinations2024 #SpainTravel

Spain Westbound ~ Merida I had the opportunity to visit it and was amazed by its grandeur and history. This is the journey through time and space that I recommend to everyone! This incredible monument was built around 16 BC during the reign of Emperor Augustus and is one of the best preserved in the Iberian Peninsula. The theatre seats 6,000 spectators and its architecture is impressive: from the “cavea” where the public sits to the imposing “scenae frons” facade. The Roman Theatre of Merida is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is still active today, being the stage for the renowned International Classical Theatre Festival. Important: The theater is closed on Mondays (the day the information is updated); Especially in summer, drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen; I recommend comfortable shoes to better enjoy the experience; If you have sensitive eyes, I suggest you bring sunglasses. #NovemberDestinations2024 #SpainTravel

A place where you can see traces of aqueducts from the Roman Empire If you want a perfect aqueduct, it would be better to visit Segovia, but if you are looking for an aqueduct that blends in better with the surroundings, wouldn't the Milagras Aqueduct be more appropriate? The space where the traces of the aqueduct pass has been developed into a park, so you can feel the space from that time more closely. #New York Flight Ticket Event #November Travel Grant Event #European Travel #Melida #Milagras Aqueduct

Extremadura region is located in the west of Spain. Although low-key, the number, scale, and value of its historical sites are among the top in Spain. It has three World Heritage Sites and is also a famous bird-watching tourist destination in Europe. Spain has a total of 15 World Heritage Cities, and Mérida (Mérida, P1-P3) and Cáceres (Cáceres, P4-P6), the capitals of Extremadura, account for 2. The ancient Roman theater and amphitheater in Mérida are still performing classic dramas, and Cáceres is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Spain and even Europe. Its history can be traced back to the Old Stone Age in 20,000 BC. In addition to historical sites, this place is also one of the producing areas of Iberian ham (Jamón bérico, P7-P9). Iberian ham can be described as a Mediterranean delicacy, with its fat and lean, soft and resilient meat. Whether it's lunch or dinner, there's always a large plate of Iberian ham on the Spaniards' table. It has become an unmissable Mediterranean delicacy!
