Mojiang travel guide and discussion

Hey everyone! I just got back from a 4-day, 3-night trip to Pu'er, Yunnan, and this city, steeped in the scent of tea, is truly healing! 🥹 Many online guides are incomplete, so to save you from any detours, I've put together this tried-and-tested, hit guide—just follow it! 📝 🗺️ Tried-and-tested 4-day itinerary (don't mix up the order!) Pu'er attractions are quite spread out, so it's easiest to visit by region: · Day 1 Simao urban cultural tour: Pu'er Sun River National Park (free, get close to nature) → Pu'er Tea Museum (free, learn about tea culture) → Simao Old Street (free, experience the local vibe) → Tropic of Cancer Landmark Park (CNY 40, educational photo op) → Ximahe Park (free, watch the sunset). · Day 2 Tea mountain ancient trail experience: Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Forests (free, World Heritage Site) → Wengji Ancient Village (free, Blang ethnic village) → Nuogang Ancient Village (free, Dai ethnic village) → Huimin Hani Ethnic Township (free, watch the sea of clouds and sunset) → Mangjing Ancient Tea Forest (free, forest hiking). · Day 3 Ximeng secret adventure: Ximeng Wa Mountain (CNY 50, watch the sea of clouds and sunrise) → Mengsuo Longtan (CNY 40, plateau lake) → Nayun Ancient Town (free, blend of Dai and Han cultures) → Wa Ethnic Museum (free) → Longmoye Sacred Site (free, mysterious Wa culture). · Day 4 Eco-leisure and return trip: China Pu'er Tea Expo Garden (CNY 30, tea picking experience) → Meizi Lake Park (free, leisurely walk) → Pu'er National Park (CNY 60, see animals and plants at the Rhinoceros Flat scenic area) → Ancient Tea Horse Road ruins (free) → Return home. 🏠 Accommodation recommendations Take my advice! Don't change hotels and move your luggage every day! I recommend staying in Simao District for Day 1 and Day 4 (near the city center, good facilities), Jingmai Mountain or Huimin Township for Day 2 (unique homestays, experience tea mountain life), and Ximeng County or Nayun Ancient Town for Day 3. During peak season (October–April of the following year), be sure to book your room a week in advance! Accommodation at the entrance of scenic spots is often expensive and old; I recommend staying in the county town or at legitimate homestays within the core scenic areas. 🍜 Food recommendations Pu'er flavors lean towards sour and spicy. Must-eats: Pu'er tea feast, Simao grilled fish, Dai-style hand-grabbed rice, migan (rice noodles), barbecue, Blang-style sour tea, bamboo rice, wild mountain vegetables, tea-infused chicken, Wa-style hand-grabbed rice, Wa King chicken, sour bamboo shoot fish, Wa-style barbecue, wild mushroom hot pot, sour papaya chicken, and rice noodles. For authentic and cheap eats, go to Simao Old Street or Taidi Night Market; you can eat your fill for about CNY 20 per person. Don't get ripped off at "internet-famous" shops in scenic areas! 📸 Photography guide · Ximahe Park: Go after 5:00 PM to capture the lake, mountains, and sunset—the atmosphere is incredible! · Jingmai Mountain/Huimin Township: Arrive at the viewing platform before 6:00 AM to photograph the sea of clouds and sunrise, and wear ethnic clothing to take stunning photos in the ancient tea forests. · Nayun Ancient Town: Walk the ancient streets and photograph the unique architecture blending Dai and Han styles, as well as the Wa ethnic customs. · Pu'er National Park: Wear light-colored clothing to take photos with the animals and plants at Rhinoceros Flat. 💡Tips: Bring a wide-angle lens; the light is best in the morning and evening. Remember to bring a power bank! 🚗 Practical tips & avoiding pitfalls (hard-learned lessons!) 1. Transportation: Attractions are very spread out, so I strongly recommend renting a car or hiring a legitimate private driver. The mountain roads to Jingmai Mountain and Ximeng have many curves; beginners should be cautious, and be sure to have motion sickness medicine ready! 2. Avoiding pitfalls: Ignore all tea farmers pushing tea sales on Jingmai Mountain! Refuse "free guides" at the station! Ask about prices before taking photos at Ximeng Wa Mountain. 3. Gear: When entering tea mountains or forest scenic areas, pay attention to mosquito protection and sun protection, and wear comfortable sneakers (lots of hiking)! Bring rain gear. 4. Best time to visit: October–April of the following year has the most pleasant climate and the most beautiful scenery! 5. Customs: Respect local ethnic minority customs, travel responsibly, protect the natural environment, do not litter, and help preserve the tea mountains and forests. The beauty of Pu'er lies in its slow pace of life—it's not overly commercialized, just filled with the most authentic scent of tea and the heartbeat of ethnic cultures 💓. Save this post, call your bestie, and go on a tea-scented getaway! 💖

If you think Pu’er is just about tea, you’re seriously underestimating it! After visiting, I realized it has not only ancient tea mountains and the Tea Horse Road but also tropical rainforests, ethnic villages, and coffee plantations. The pace is slower than Dali, and tourists aren’t as concentrated as in Xishuangbanna, making it perfect for a relaxing, unhurried healing trip. 🌿 This Pu’er 3-day 2-night itinerary, personally explored and optimized by me, is perfect for first-timers—just follow it as is! 📍Basic travel info for Pu’er Pu’er is located in southern Yunnan. The main areas to explore are divided into three parts: Simao urban area, the Sun River and Tea Expo Garden area, and Lancang Jingmai Mountain. You can take taxis around the city. For Sun River, coffee plantations, and Jingmai Mountain, self-driving or chartered cars are better. Especially Jingmai Mountain, located in Huimin Town, Lancang County, is far from the city center, so it’s not recommended to squeeze it into the same day as city sights. The Jingmai Mountain ancient tea forest cultural landscape includes ancient tea forests, traditional villages, and forests. It’s the world’s first tea-themed World Cultural Heritage site. 🗓️Recommended duration: 3 days 2 nights 🚗Recommended transport: self-driving or chartered car 🌤️Best season: October to April 👟Travel intensity: moderate, with walking required in tea mountains and forests DAY 1: Leisurely explore Pu’er city and soak in local life Tea Horse Ancient Town → Pu’er Confucian Temple → Taiping Old Street → Pu’er City Museum → Meizi Lake Park The first stop was Tea Horse Ancient Town. It’s not a traditional ancient town but more of a tea horse culture-themed leisure street with distinctive Yunnan architecture. It’s less crowded in the morning, making it great for photos. Then walk or take a taxi to Pu’er Confucian Temple. The red walls, flying eaves, and ancient trees feel historic. It’s quiet and peaceful, so allow about 40 minutes. Next, head to Taiping Old Street for food. Small shops, cafes, and old buildings mix together, offering a more authentic local vibe than commercialized ancient towns. In the afternoon, visit Pu’er City Museum depending on opening hours to quickly learn about tea culture, ethnic customs, and Pu’er history. In the evening, stroll around Meizi Lake Park to watch the lake and city lights come on. Don’t pack the first day too full. For dinner, I had Wa-style barbecue, pounded chicken feet, and sour bamboo shoot fish stew. The flavors are sour and spicy, so if you can’t eat spicy, be sure to say so in advance! 🌶️ DAY 2: Tea gardens, rainforests, and coffee—three experiences in one day China Pu’er Tea Expo Garden → Pu’er Sun River Forest Park → Xiao’aozi Coffee Plantation Start the morning at China Pu’er Tea Expo Garden. The tea gardens spread across the hills, and on a clear day, the layers look stunning. Besides photos, you can learn about Pu’er tea planting, processing, and brewing. The official Yunnan Simao district itinerary also lists the Tea Horse Road scenic area, Tea Expo Garden, and Sun River Forest Park as core attractions. In the afternoon, head to Sun River Forest Park. The boardwalk is surrounded by lush greenery, the air is humid, and it feels cooler than the city. I recommend wearing non-slip sneakers and taking your time rather than rushing to check in. There are many mosquitoes in the rainforest, so bring insect repellent. If you have the energy, stop by Xiao’aozi Coffee Plantation on the way back. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the city center in the Nandao River area of Simao district. You can learn about coffee from planting to brewing. When ordering, don’t just get a latte. I recommend pour-over or Americano to better appreciate Pu’er coffee’s fruity acidity and aroma. ☕ DAY 3: Save the whole day for Jingmai Mountain Jingmai Village → Ancient tea forest → Wengji Ancient Village → Nuogan Ancient Village On day three, start early. Jingmai Mountain deserves a full day. Once inside the ancient tea forest, the most striking feeling isn’t awe but quietness: tea trees grow within the forest, leaves fall underfoot, and the air carries a faint scent of grass and tea. Wengji Ancient Village features Bulang ethnic culture and traditional homes. The wooden buildings, temples, and ancient trees are perfect for slow exploration. Nuogan Ancient Village is even more rustic, with houses spread along the mountain slopes. The rooftops look especially layered from above. Once inside the village, don’t just take photos—find a local tea house, sit down for a cup of tea, listen to the owner talk about life in the tea mountains, and your experience will be much richer. If you don’t go to Jingmai Mountain, you can swap day three for a half-day trip to Nakeli Tea Horse Post. Nakeli is about 25 km from Pu’er city center and preserves Tea Horse Road relics, as well as horse caravan culture sites like wind-and-rain bridges and waterwheels. It’s a good stop if you’re driving in and out of Pu’er. 🏨Where to stay? For the first two days, I recommend staying near Simao city or Tea Horse Ancient Town. Restaurants are concentrated, taxis are convenient, and the evenings are lively. For a deeper Jingmai Mountain experience, spend the second night in a guesthouse near Wengji, Nuogan, or Jingmai Village. Conditions in the mountains can’t compare to city hotels, but the morning mist, starry nights, and fire pit tea roasting are experiences you won’t get in the city. When booking a Jingmai Mountain guesthouse, be sure to confirm if it has a private bathroom, parking, heating or electric blankets, and whether transfers are provided. 🍲Don’t miss these local foods I highly recommend Wa-style barbecue, wrapped barbecue, sour bamboo shoot fish stew, pounded chicken feet, wild mushroom hot pot, Pu’er tea crisp, and local small-batch coffee. During the rainy season, only eat wild mushrooms at reputable restaurants and make sure they are thoroughly cooked. Don’t drink alcohol the same day you eat mushrooms, and never buy unknown mushrooms to prepare yourself. ⚠️Practical tips and pitfalls to avoid ✅ Attractions are spread out. Self-driving saves time compared to taxis. Fill up your tank before heading into the mountains. ✅ Jingmai Mountain has many curves. If you get car sick easily, prepare medication in advance. ✅ Mountain temperatures vary greatly between morning and night. Even in summer, bring a light jacket and rain gear. ✅ Ancient villages are people’s homes. Always ask permission before photographing people or inside houses. ✅ When buying tea, don’t just listen to “ancient trees, vintage, collectible value.” Taste first and clarify weight and price. ✅ Don’t try to cram Jingmai Mountain, Nakeli, and Mojiang into three days. Travel times are long, and the trip will feel rushed. What makes Pu’er truly charming isn’t a single popular photo spot but the wind in the tea mountains, birdsong in the rainforest, and the time spent slowly finishing a cup of tea. Would you rather drink tea in Jingmai Mountain or enjoy a freshly brewed coffee in a coffee plantation? 🍃 travel mountain ancient tea forest off-the-beaten-path travel horse road coffee

🌿 Pu'er is truly a severely underestimated parent-child treasure destination! Without the crowds of Xishuangbanna, it offers the same tropical rainforest and a healing, slow-paced life. Bring your kids here, and every day will be awakened by the aroma of tea and coffee. 🌅 Day 1: First Encounter with Tea Aroma, Slow Time on the Tea Horse Road Nakeli Tea Horse Post Station is truly perfect for families with kids! It's a free 4A-rated scenic area, where the entire village retains the style of horse caravans from a century ago. Bluestone paths, wind-and-rain bridges, and the Rongfa Horse Inn – every spot feels like traveling back to ancient times. Kids can experience unique woodblock printing and plant dyeing handicrafts here, or sit by the stream, splash in the water, and play with stones. You don't need to supervise at all; they can play all afternoon by themselves. For lunch, we ate at the Horse Caravan Restaurant in the village. You absolutely must try Lei Xiang Tea; the teapot sizzles on the fire, and the tea poured out has an intoxicating aroma. The Bean Soup Rice Noodles are 9 RMB a bowl; the pink rice noodles with a bean soup base were so good that the kids couldn't get enough, even after two bowls. In the afternoon, we visited the China Pu'er Tea Expo Garden. The all-inclusive ticket is 80 RMB, including a round-trip electric car. With tea plantations covering the mountains, kids can personally pick tea, make tea, and finally taste a cup of Pu'er tea they made themselves. Standing on the observation deck overlooking ten thousand acres of tea plantations, when the wind blows, the aroma of tea wafts over you. That healing feeling is truly indescribable. 🎯 Day 2: Forest Adventure, Befriend Red Pandas Sun River National Forest Park is definitely the ultimate parent-child destination in Pu'er! The package ticket is 135 RMB, including admission and a round-trip electric car. We recommend entering before 9 AM when there are fewer people and the animals are more active. The red pandas here are incredibly friendly; for 20 RMB, you can buy apple strips and feed them up close. The fluffy little guys will climb onto your lap to eat, making the kids scream with excitement and not want to leave. Besides red pandas, you can also see rhinos, gibbons, and various birds. With a forest coverage rate of 94.5%, walking through it feels like stepping into the rainforest world of Avatar. "Flying Through the Jungle" is 162 RMB per person; older kids can challenge themselves to this thrilling experience of soaring through the treetops. At night, you can stay at the Little Panda Manor. Open the door, and you're in the forest. Fall asleep to the sound of insects and wake up to birdsong in the morning. This immersive forest experience is something your kids will never forget. ☕ Day 3: Coffee Slow Time, World Heritage Exploration Pu'er has so many coffee estates! At Xiao'aozi Coffee Estate, it's 60 RMB per person for unlimited refills. A Taiwanese grandpa will personally tell you the story of coffee and take your kids on a tour of the coffee garden to see how coffee beans go from the tree to the cup. The architecture of Dakaihe Meizi Coffee Estate is incredibly well-designed, perfect for photos. You must try their coffee brittle. In the afternoon, head to Jingmai Mountain, a new UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023. The 28,000 acres of ancient tea forests are truly breathtaking. You must visit Wengji Ancient Village and Nuogan Ancient Village. The Blang people's roasted tea, hand-grabbed rice, and the filming location of "Coffee or Tea?" – every spot is worth exploring slowly. The Tropic of Cancer Landmark Park in Mojiang is also very interesting. With a 40 RMB ticket, kids can experience stepping across the tropical and temperate zones, make wishes at the Twin Wells, and take the 70 RMB round-trip "Flying Magic Carpet" to reach the summit without climbing, which is very friendly for families with kids. Accommodation 🏨 Pu'er Little Panda Manor Detached wooden cabins in the forest, green views from the window, close contact with wild animals, family rooms have exclusive children's amenities. 🏨 Pu'er Kaiyuan Meizihu Hot Spring Hotel Built by the lake, with a tranquil environment, hot springs, and a children's playground, suitable for a relaxing family vacation. 🏨 Pu'er Tasly Dipuer Bio-Tea Valley Hotel A tea-themed hotel with a rich tea culture atmosphere, spacious and comfortable rooms, suitable for families who love tea culture. 🏨 Pu'er Jingmai Bolian Hotel A luxurious hotel within the World Heritage site, surrounded by ancient tea forests, with excellent service, offering a full resort experience.

The sundial and the zodiac sculpture group are very unique, and every photo you take here looks great. Stop 4: Tropic of Cancer Landmark Park (Admission ticket: 40) The world's largest Tropic of Cancer-themed park. It features 15 unique attractions and offers a one-stop experience for astronomy and geography. It's an AAAA-rated scenic spot and also has two twin wells. You can feel the boundary between the temperate and tropical zones—the feeling of straddling two zones is so cool! Stop 5: Mojiang Confucian Temple An ancient architectural complex from the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. It covers a massive 7,600 square meters and is magnificent in scale. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily, so I just took a photo at the entrance before catching a taxi to the high-speed train. I definitely need to go inside and explore next time! Along the way, I also ran into 2 puppies walking by the water outdoors 🐕. Strolling in front of the mountain statues, it was so healing on a rainy day.

🔭 The Sun Tower is the core. The main tower is 23.26 meters high, which perfectly corresponds to the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer! There is a sun-viewing hole at the top of the tower. At noon on the summer solstice, when the sun shines directly down, you can witness the magical phenomenon of "no shadow under a vertical pole." It's absolutely amazing! 🤯 👣 Straddle two climate zones. The Tropic of Cancer is clearly visible in the park! On the south side of the line are tropical plants like banana trees and palm trees 🌴, and on the north side are temperate plants like pines and firs 🌲. You can cross two climate zones in one step—it's perfect for photos 📸 👯 Unique twin culture. The Twin Star Plaza features stone carvings of the Hani ethnic group's ancestors, the Twin Well, and the Twin Bed. Mojiang has an incredibly high birth rate for twins, and they even host an International Twin Festival every May. It's so interesting! 🎉 🗺️ 15 connected attractions. From the Gate of the Tropic, the Sun Road, and the Kuafu Chasing the Sun sculpture to the Planetarium, Stone Array Plaza, and the Hani Fire-Making Platform, you can tour along the path symbolizing the Tropic of Cancer around the world. It's a great way to learn while you explore 📚 ⛰️ Visiting the observatory on the mountain is free, but you need to pay CNY 1 for shoe covers to enter. There is also a Pu'er tea plantation on one side of the mountain, where you can visit the tea gardens for free 🍵 🚶 Pedestrians should enter from the East Gate: The mountain path is relatively gentle, allowing you to slowly walk along the Tropic of Cancer and check off the attractions one by one, then head down the stairs at the West Gate. 🚗 If driving, navigate to the West Gate parking lot; parking is convenient! However, you'll need to climb stairs or take the magic carpet to get up the mountain. Most people find it easier to stop and enjoy the view while walking up. For seniors and children, we recommend taking the magic carpet 👌 🎫 Admission: Adult tickets are CNY 40. National discount policies apply. ⏰ Opening hours: Daily 8:00 AM–6:30 PM. 📍 Address: G227 Twin Avenue, Mojiang Hani Autonomous County, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province. You can navigate directly there if driving. It's truly beautiful on a sunny day, and it's perfect for taking kids for a walk or taking photos ☀️ Save this guide now!

Previously, when I thought of the "Tropic of Cancer," all I pictured was that intangible, dotted line from geography textbooks 📖. It wasn't until this road trip to Mojiang, Yunnan, that I saw it with my own eyes and even walked on it, that I truly understood: much knowledge can only be truly grasped by experiencing it firsthand. The impact of "textbook becoming reality" is far more profound than simply reading about it! 💥 Mojiang is truly a special place ✨ The Tropic of Cancer runs right through Mojiang County, and this landmark park is built on this latitude line. The entire scenic area is highly educational, with richly divided sections and diverse content. The main building, the landmark tower, stands 23.26 meters tall, precisely corresponding to the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer. A "sun-viewing hole" at the top allows for observation of the astronomical spectacle of "no shadow at midday" on the summer solstice. 🔭 The park also features ten unique attractions, including a sundial plaza, a planetarium, and a twin-star plaza, offering a wealth of astronomical and geographical knowledge along the way—a perfect blend of family fun and educational exploration. 👨‍👩‍👧 Most amazingly, it also harbors the mysterious "twin phenomenon"—yes, this is the famous "Twin City"! 👯 Walking through the park, immersed in its unique cultural atmosphere, even the air feels imbued with the wonders of nature. 🍃 Highly recommended for families with children; it's an absolutely fun and educational educational trip! 💡Honest Travel Tips: 1️⃣ Upon arriving at the scenic area entrance, I strongly recommend watching the promotional video 🎬 and spending a few minutes learning the background information. Having a comprehensive understanding before entering will double your experience; otherwise, you'll easily feel rushed and superficial. 👀 2️⃣ Although there are elevators and a "magic carpet" inside to take you up, honestly, the mountain isn't very high! I personally suggest walking up slowly; it's good exercise, you can enjoy the scenery along the way, and it's much more cost-effective. 💪 🚗 One last driving tip: Search "Mojiang Tropic of Cancer Landmark Park" on your navigation app; it's very accurate. 📍 There's parking available at the entrance. The best part is that the Moon Square in the scenic area has charging stations for new energy vehicles, available 24/7. Those driving electric cars can charge with peace of mind. ⚡ Yunnan's mountainous highways have many curves, so drivers should be careful to control their speed and drive safely. 🛞 If you also want to experience the awe-inspiring feeling of "textbooks coming to life," or want to take your children on a weekend trip to broaden their horizons, Mojiang is definitely worth a visit! 🌟 Cultural Salon

In Yunnan, there is a mysterious place that not only resembles the "Yunnan Worm Valley" described in novels but is also shrouded in an enigmatic veil, making outsiders both curious and apprehensive. This place is the Ailao Mountain Scenic Area, located in central Yunnan. However, the Ailao Mountain you imagine might differ from the reality. It’s not entirely an unapproachable wilderness; there are windows that allow you to glimpse its true beauty. Take a hiking trip to Ailao Mountain in autumn or winter to explore the other side of this mysterious land. 🔥🔥 Key Information to Know: 📌 Hiking Distance: Approximately 24 km 🎈 Camping: Light gear, no camping required 📌 Hiking Level: Beginner-friendly 🔥🔥 Why Autumn and Winter Are the Best Seasons for Hiking in Ailao Mountain: 1️⃣ Say goodbye to the leech troubles in the primeval forest, making your hike safer. 2️⃣ Starting from November, rainfall decreases significantly, with more sunny days and a drier climate, making it an ideal time for sightseeing. 3️⃣ The Yuanyang Rice Terraces have been harvested, offering a chance to admire the Hani people's terraced landscapes. 4️⃣ From November to February, it’s the golden season to witness the sea of clouds and sunrise in Ailao Mountain (popular viewing platforms can get crowded, so plan to arrive early and dress warmly). 🔥🔥 Must-See Scenery: This is a journey of both natural beauty and cultural heritage: from the mystery of primeval forests to the unique culture of the Hani people, and the old-world charm hidden in the ancient towns of southern Yunnan. ✅ Ailao Mountain Scenic Area: Experience the mysterious atmosphere reminiscent of "Yunnan Worm Valley" with its rolling mountains, deep valleys, and vast primeval forests. Enjoy cascading waterfalls, streams, and moss-covered tree trunks under a canopy of dense forest. Walk along the ancient Tea Horse Road and listen to echoes of history. ✅ Nan'en Waterfall: Ailao Mountain’s iconic large waterfall cascades down cliffs for dozens of meters, creating a misty spectacle. From November to December, the reduced water flow offers a unique charm. ✅ Sea of Clouds and Sunrise: Hidden within the mountains, this cloudscape is a breathtaking sight. At night, valley water vapor condenses, forming a continuous sea of clouds surrounded by mountains. At dawn, the sun rises slowly, casting golden light over the white waves of clouds, which shift and flow with the wind, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. As the sun climbs higher, the clouds gradually lift and dissipate. ✅ Yuanyang Rice Terraces: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, these terraces are a thousand-year-old masterpiece sculpted by the Hani people. The best viewing season is during the autumn and winter irrigation period (November to March). The terraced fields, filled with water, resemble mirrors scattered across the mountains, reflecting the sky and glowing with the colors of dawn and dusk. ✅ Jianshui Ancient Town: Formerly known as Lin'an, this town boasts a history of over a thousand years. Locals have lived here for generations, preserving its vibrant culture. The town features a network of cobblestone streets, ancient wells, and old residences, with well-preserved historical architecture, earning it the title of "Museum of Ancient Architecture in Southern Yunnan." 🔥🔥 Suggested Itinerary: D1: Gather in Kunming D2: Kunming—Nan'en Waterfall—Ailao Mountain D3: Ailao Mountain (Sea of Clouds)—Hike through Ailao Mountain—Mojiang D4: Mojiang—Yuanyang Rice Terraces D5: Yuanyang Rice Terraces—Jianshui Ancient Town—Kunming

For a refined 2-day, 1-night trip to Pu'er, the core idea is to stop rushing and focus on the area around Simao District. Pu'er's attractions are scattered. Jingmai Mountain and Mojiang are at least 2 hours away one way. Trying to squeeze them into a short trip will just leave you exhausted. I suggest slowing down: spend one day with the forest and animals, one night enjoying the night views and hot springs of the Tea Horse Ancient City, and have two authentic meals. That's just right. 🌿 A curated 2-day, 1-night itinerary Day 1: Forest healing and Tea Horse Caravan tales · Morning: Sun River National Forest Park. I recommend entering before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds; tour groups usually arrive after 10:30 AM. The park has a forest coverage rate of over 97%. The highlights are Rhino Flat and the Red Panda Manor. Be sure to buy the shuttle bus pass (about CNY 150); the park is too large to walk, and you'll exhaust yourself. Reserve 4 hours for your visit. · Lunch: Leave the park and head back to the city. Find a rice noodle shop crowded with locals and have a bowl of peanut soup rice noodles. It's rich, fragrant, and sweet. You can have a satisfying meal for about CNY 10. · Afternoon: Rest at your hotel or stroll through Daijia Lane. If you're staying at the Red Panda Manor, you can head back to your room for a nap. If you're staying in the city, walk through the old alleys of Daijia Lane. Avoid the "internet-famous" shops and find "Xiangli Coffee" for a CNY 20 small-bean latte. Pick up a block of brown sugar for CNY 10 as a souvenir. · Evening: Tea Horse Ancient City. Be sure to go after 7:00 PM. During the day, it's just an ordinary commercial street; the caravan atmosphere only emerges after the lights come on. Admission is free, and 1.5 hours is enough to explore. For dinner, head inside and look for shops locals frequent, like "Dai Family Courtyard," and avoid the touristy shops at the entrance. Day 2: Slow time at the ancient post station and departure · Morning: Nakeli Tea Horse Post Station. It's about a 1-hour drive from Simao, and admission is free. This is one of the best-preserved post stations on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. The stone paths, wind-and-rain bridges, and old horse inns are authentic historical sites, much more genuine than commercialized ancient towns. Spend 1.5 hours exploring the core village, plus 2.5 hours for the surrounding tea mountain trails. · Tips and experiences: It's easy to get into the "free tea tasting" shops in the village but hard to leave. If you want to buy tea, go to the old shops at the village entrance that have been open for over a decade. You must try the grilled sticky rice cake at the entrance of the post station; it's CNY 5 each and served with honey. · Lunch: Have a meal of caravan cuisine in Nakeli or on your way back. I recommend the "Luoguo" (pot) rice and the "one bean, three ways" dish to experience the rustic, resourceful spirit of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. · Afternoon: Depart according to your flight or high-speed train schedule. If you have extra time, head back to the city to buy some Pu'er tea or coffee beans as souvenirs. 🏨 How to choose accommodation (the key to a refined experience) · Top choice: Pu'er Red Panda Manor. Located right inside Sun River National Forest Park, it features standalone forest cabins with views right outside your window. It saves you the hassle of traveling back and forth to the city on the first day and offers the most immersive experience. · Alternative: High-end hotels in Simao District. For example, the Pu'er Kaiyuan Meizihu Hot Spring Hotel offers Southeast Asian style and is suitable for those who want both city convenience and a hot spring experience. Alternatively, choose a boutique homestay near the Tea Horse Ancient City (like Senyu LOHAS), which is convenient for both exploring the ancient city and visiting Nakeli. 🍜 Refined taste buds checklist · Must-eat breakfast: Peanut soup rice noodles (the soul of Simao breakfast). · Hearty main courses: Caravan cuisine (around Nakeli or Tea Horse Ancient City), Dai Family Courtyard (inside Tea Horse Ancient City, CNY 60 can feed 2 people until they're stuffed). · Street snacks: Nakeli grilled sticky rice cake (with honey), Daijia Lane brown sugar. 💡 Practical tips · Transportation: There are no direct buses between Pu'er attractions, so I recommend chartering a car or taking a taxi. A taxi from Simao city to Sun River costs about CNY 60–80, and it's about a 1-hour drive to Nakeli. · Clothing: There are many mosquitoes in the forest, so be sure to bring mosquito repellent. Wear sneakers for the stone paths in Nakeli and the Meizihu boardwalk for safety. · Avoiding pitfalls: Definitely skip Jingmai Mountain and Mojiang. Although Jingmai Mountain is beautiful (with its sea of clouds and ancient villages), the one-way drive is quite long. Trying to squeeze it into a 2-day, 1-night trip will mean spending the whole time in the car. Save it for a dedicated trip next time. Wishing you a relaxed trip!
