You don’t need to drive to explore some of the Lake District’s most beautiful lakes. 🚆🚌 Here are 5 of my favourites and how to reach them by public transport. 1️⃣ Windermere 🌊 🚆 Windermere Station From the station, take the 599 to Bowness, or walk around 30 minutes to the lake. Windermere is the easiest lake to reach by train. 2️⃣ Derwentwater 🏔️ 🚆 Penrith Station Take the X4/X5 bus to Keswick, then walk down to the lake. You can also take the Keswick Launch to explore different parts of Derwentwater. 3️⃣ Ullswater 🌿 🚆 Penrith Station From Penrith, take the 508 towards Glenridding/Patterdale, or the 509 from Keswick. In summer, the UB1/UB2 Ullswater Bus connects the main villages and attractions. 4️⃣ Coniston Water 🚤 🚆 Windermere Station Take the 505 through Ambleside and Hawkshead to Coniston. You can then explore the lake by foot or take the Coniston Launch. 5️⃣ Buttermere 🏔️ 🚆 Penrith Station → Keswick Take the X4/X5 to Keswick, then connect towards Buttermere. In summer 2026, the 77/77A connects Keswick and Buttermere, while the 77C shuttle runs between Cockermouth and Buttermere on selected days. 💡 Good to know: the Lake District is surprisingly easy to explore without a car, but check timetables before travelling because some routes are seasonal. The Lake District is possibly the most beautiful landscape in England. Of course it has the numerous lakes dotted around the national park but it has a lot more in between For example adjacent to Ullswater is an impressive waterfall called Aira Force which has a very easy and accessible short trail to it which starts at a large car park near the lake. The trail is gentle and not testing for most people. The waterfall is impressive and gives many photo ops. The trail continues over the waterfall and beyond to a very walkable gentle walk over Gowbarrow Fell. The walk up gives stunning 360 views of the surrounding area. However the true beauty is seen on the way down the other side from where the whole of Ullswater can be seen at once ! This trip is easy even for someone like me that dislikes trekking too much 😂😂 and the rewards are huge for nature lovers. Remember sensible footwear and dress according to the weather. In the summer it can get busy in the car park so factor that into your time. The whole walk could take two hours or more depending how many times you stop to enjoy the views !

📍 Keswick, Cumbria Here’s how I’d plan 3 days in Keswick: 🌤️ Day 1 — Classic Keswick views & Derwentwater Start with the famous Derwentwater — the lake that sits right next to Keswick. ⛴️ Take the Derwentwater Launch boat around the lake. You can hop on and off at different jetties, making it easy to combine a boat trip with walks. 🥾 Walk to Friar’s Crag : one of the easiest viewpoints but with one of the most beautiful views over Derwentwater and the surrounding fells. If you want a bigger challenge: ⛰️ Catbells is one of the most popular walks near Keswick, offering incredible panoramic views over the lake and mountains. 🌤️ Day 2: Explore Borrowdale Valley Take the bus (or better -walk)from Keswick into Borrowdale Valley: one of the most scenic areas in the Lake District. 🚌 The 78 bus runs through Borrowdale towards Rosthwaite and Seatoller. Things to do: 🌿 Walk through the valley surrounded by dramatic mountains 🌉 Visit Ashness Bridge, one of the most photographed spots in the Lake District 🌊 Stop at viewpoints overlooking Derwentwater. This is the kind of place where you don’t need a packed schedule,the scenery does the work. 🌧️ Day 3: Rainy day in Keswick The Lake District is famous for unpredictable weather, so it helps to have a backup plan. ☔ ☕ Spend time in cafés, browse outdoor shops, and enjoy the slower side of the town. 📍 Penrith Railway Station, Cumbria If you're travelling to the Lake District by train, Penrith Railway Station is one of the easiest places to start your adventure. Sitting on the West Coast Main Line, it's just around 3 hours from London Euston on a direct train, making it one of the fastest ways to reach the Northern Lakes without a car. What makes Penrith convenient is that it's connected to some of the Lake District's most popular destinations: 🚌 Keswick – take the X4 or X5 (around 40 minutes). 🌿 Borrowdale Valley – take the X4 or X5 to Keswick, then change to the 78 for villages such as Rosthwaite or Seatoller (around 1 hour 15 minutes in total). 🚤 Ullswater (Pooley Bridge) – take the 508 (seasonal) or 509 (around 20–25 minutes). 🏞️This time, I stayed at the Station Hotel, directly opposite the station, before continuing my journey to the beautiful Borrowdale Valley the following morning. It was the perfect overnight stop after arriving from London. the station is overlooked by the ruins of Penrith Castle. Built in the late 14th century to help defend the English border against Scottish raids, it's only a 2-minute walk from the station, making it one of the easiest castles to visit as soon as you arrive. Whether you're planning to hike, cruise on a lake or discover charming villages, everything feels within easy reach. #easytravelpost Helvellyn (950 m) is the Lake District's most-walked 3,000-footer. I based in Glenridding, parked at the village pay car park (£9/day, card), and took the Greenside path to Red Tarn—3 km, 2 hrs, 600 m gain. The moss stretch is the 1 km above Lanty's Tarn where the path seeps and the clubmoss carpets the ledges; by Red Tarn (720 m, under the east face cliffs) I was at 08:10 with the crags glowing. Striding Edge is the famous arete from Red Tarn to the summit—Class 1 scramble, exposure on both sides, not for wind days. I did Red Tarn→Striding Edge→summit→Swirral Edge→back, 5 hrs loop. No park entry fee (Lake District NP is free), but the Glenridding lot is the only reliable pay point; the roadside pull-offs get ticketed. Mistake: I did Striding Edge in a 50 km/h gust and crawled on my arse for 100 m—check the Met Office Helm Wind warning, avoid the edge Nov–Mar. Another: I carried 1 L and cramped at Red Tarn; 2 L, the tarn isn't drinkable untreated. Would you take Striding Edge for the adrenaline, or climb via the mossy Greenside path and descend Swirral for the quieter rim?

#itinerarycheck I did the classic Glenridding–Striding Edge–Helvellyn–Swirral Edge loop on a Saturday in late May, starting at 7:40 a.m. from the main Glenridding pay-and-display car park (around £9 for the day; by 9 a.m. it was nearly full). The route is about 13 km and took me 6h20 with breaks. I’d call it a Grade 1 scramble, not a hike—anyone with a fear of heights or no mountain experience should not treat it as a casual day out. From the car park you follow Mires Beck up to the “Hole-in-the-Wall” in the drystone wall. That first climb is relentless but obvious. The real test begins at Striding Edge: the ridge starts broad, then narrows to a knife-edge with steep drops both sides. I stayed on the crest except for the final rock step (“The Chimney”), where I down-climbed on the right and regrouped. In wind over 40 mph or in cloud, I would not do this—the summit plateau is featureless and navigation gets nasty fast. Helvellyn summit (950 m) was busy but cold; I ate behind the stone shelter. Descent via Swirral Edge is shorter and steeper than Striding Edge, with loose rock near the top, then a long walk back down past Red Tarn Beck to Glenridding. Must-bring: boots with ankle support, full waterproofs, 2 L water, map OS OL5 + compass, power bank, headtorch. Common mistake: starting late and underestimating the descent. My opinion—go up by 8 a.m., check Mountain Weather forecast, and skip it entirely if rain or high wind is predicted. Ullswater Steamers at Glenridding pier are a nice recovery if legs still work.

📍 Penrith, Cumbria Our Lake District adventure started with a train from London Euston to Penrith, the main gateway to the Northern Lakes. Although we were only stopping for one night before heading to Keswick, Penrith turned out to be well worth exploring. The town centre is compact and easy to walk around, with independent shops, cafés and traditional sandstone buildings that give it plenty of Cumbrian character. ⛪ Don't miss St Andrew's Church, which has stood at the heart of Penrith for centuries. Parts of the church date back to the 12th century, and in the churchyard you'll find the Giant's Grave, a fascinating collection of 10th-century Viking stone crosses and carved monuments linked to local legends. It's one of Penrith's most historic landmarks and only a short walk from the town centre. One of the highlights is Penrith Beacon, just a 20–30 minute walk from the centre. The hill has been used as a beacon site for centuries, where warning fires were once lit to alert people of approaching danger. Today, it's one of the best viewpoints in the area, with panoramic views across the Eden Valley, the Pennines and, on a clear day, towards the Lake District fells. 🚆 Getting there: Direct trains from London Euston take around 3 hours, making Penrith one of the easiest gateways to the Lake District by rail. 🚍 Why stop here? Penrith is a great base for exploring the Northern Lakes. Regular buses connect the town with Keswick, Ullswater, and other popular destinations, making it an ideal first stop before continuing your Lake District adventure. For us, Penrith wasn't the final destination, it was the perfect introduction to Cumbria before setting off for Keswick the next morning. Don’t rush, this is the warm-up. As the scenery gradually opens up, the lake behind you shrinks 🥾Crossing the ridge is where it really begins, a narrow rocky ridge about 1.5 km long. Most sections require using both hands and feet, with steep slopes on both sides and the deep blue Red Tarn lake below. There is a small section called "The Chimney" with a vertical descent, which is the most difficult part of the entire route
