You can hop on and off at different jetties, making it easy to combine a boat trip with walks. 🥾 Walk to Friar’s Crag : one of the easiest viewpoints but with one of the most beautiful views over Derwentwater and the surrounding fells. If you want a bigger challenge: ⛰️ Catbells is one of the most popular walks near Keswick, offering incredible panoramic views over the lake and mountains. 🌤️ Day 2: Explore Borrowdale Valley Take the bus (or better -walk)from Keswick into Borrowdale Valley: one of the most scenic areas in the Lake District. 🚌 The 78 bus runs through Borrowdale towards Rosthwaite and Seatoller. Things to do: 🌿 Walk through the valley surrounded by dramatic mountains 🌉 Visit Ashness Bridge, one of the most photographed spots in the Lake District 🌊 Stop at viewpoints overlooking Derwentwater. 📍 Penrith Railway Station, Cumbria If you're travelling to the Lake District by train, Penrith Railway Station is one of the easiest places to start your adventure. Sitting on the West Coast Main Line, it's just around 3 hours from London Euston on a direct train, making it one of the fastest ways to reach the Northern Lakes without a car. What makes Penrith convenient is that it's connected to some of the Lake District's most popular destinations: 🚌 Keswick – take the X4 or X5 (around 40 minutes). 🌿 Borrowdale Valley – take the X4 or X5 to Keswick, then change to the 78 for villages such as Rosthwaite or Seatoller (around 1 hour 15 minutes in total). 🚤 Ullswater (Pooley Bridge) – take the 508 (seasonal) or 509 (around 20–25 minutes). 🏞️This time, I stayed at the Station Hotel, directly opposite the station, before continuing my journey to the beautiful Borrowdale Valley the following morning. It was the perfect overnight stop after arriving from London. the station is overlooked by the ruins of Penrith Castle. Built in the late 14th century to help defend the English border against Scottish raids, it's only a 2-minute walk from the station, making it one of the easiest castles to visit as soon as you arrive. Whether you're planning to hike, cruise on a lake or discover charming villages, everything feels within easy reach. 📍 Penrith, Cumbria Our Lake District adventure started with a train from London Euston to Penrith, the main gateway to the Northern Lakes. Although we were only stopping for one night before heading to Keswick, Penrith turned out to be well worth exploring. The town centre is compact and easy to walk around, with independent shops, cafés and traditional sandstone buildings that give it plenty of Cumbrian character. ⛪ Don't miss St Andrew's Church, which has stood at the heart of Penrith for centuries. Parts of the church date back to the 12th century, and in the churchyard you'll find the Giant's Grave, a fascinating collection of 10th-century Viking stone crosses and carved monuments linked to local legends. It's one of Penrith's most historic landmarks and only a short walk from the town centre. One of the highlights is Penrith Beacon, just a 20–30 minute walk from the centre. The hill has been used as a beacon site for centuries, where warning fires were once lit to alert people of approaching danger. Today, it's one of the best viewpoints in the area, with panoramic views across the Eden Valley, the Pennines and, on a clear day, towards the Lake District fells. 🚆 Getting there: Direct trains from London Euston take around 3 hours, making Penrith one of the easiest gateways to the Lake District by rail. 🚍 Why stop here? Penrith is a great base for exploring the Northern Lakes. Regular buses connect the town with Keswick, Ullswater, and other popular destinations, making it an ideal first stop before continuing your Lake District adventure. We went up from Keswick to cat then Ella’s and then we went to more mountains dry and wet it was super fun we walked all night and we’re abit h holly but it was an overall brilliant experience would definitely recommend. I think my favourite part of the triple switching the second son it’s where we sat down and ate our lunch. I had a dime bar, a vanilla drink to fuel the walk, a cheese and egg sandwich with butter. My friends had cucumber lettuce ha ha more healthy than me :-) then we continued on a hike. My friend Boot broke that was quite scary. and please set up the tent in a beautiful licensed campsites near Derwent water. It was a lovely time. He sat round the fire son, campfire, songs, camp fires burning. I love chicken et cetera we roasted some Schmorl’s we had a laugh. We had a hug, and then we sat down in a sleeping bags and went to bed

I had the amazing Pizza at Domino’s in city center of Penrith. It was personal size at 3.99 only. And its worth the price and the taste.

There’s something about standing on top of the world- or at least, it felt that way on Helvellyn. Rising early with the mist still clinging to the hills, we began our ascent into the heart of the Lake District’s wild beauty. Step by step, the landscape transformed: rolling greens turned to craggy ridges, and the wind carried whispers of adventure. Striding Edge tested our nerve (and our balance), but every gust of wind and every shaky foothold was worth it. The ridge was pure drama- sheer drops on either side, the kind of view that makes your heart beat a little faster. Then came the summit: 950 metres of triumph. Clouds danced below us. Time paused. Phones out. Smiles wide. We caught our breath with a flask of tea and soaked in the silence before descending via Swirral Edge- equally thrilling, equally beautiful. Legs burning, spirits flying. Whether you’re there for the views, the challenge, or just to feel small beneath a big sky, Helvellyn delivers. It’s not just a hike- it’s a reset button for your soul.
