Sami travel guide and discussion

#mediterranean Melissani cave is the underground lake, where crystal-clear waters shimmer beneath a partially collapsed roof, allowing sunlight to filter through in an ethereal light. Melissani Cave is not only a natural wonder but also a place steeped in ancient Greek mythology. According to legend, the cave was home to the nymph Melissani, who was deeply in love with the god Pan. Melissani's love for Pan was unrequited, and in her despair, she drowned herself in the lake that now bears her name. Melissani Cave entry tickets cost around €8 for adults and €4 for children, with a combined ticket for Melissani and Drogarati Cave available for about €12. #greece #kefalonia

What if one of the greatest adventure stories ever written could be turned into a travel map? 🌊⛵ Homer’s Odyssey follows Odysseus on a long and chaotic journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters monsters, sorceresses, gods, strange islands and dangerous seas. But here’s the fascinating part: Some of the places connected with the story are real. Others are traditional identifications. And some exist only in mythology. 🟢 1. Troy — Hisarlık, Türkiye The journey begins with the Trojan War. The archaeological site at Hisarlık is widely identified with ancient Troy and contains multiple layers of settlement built over thousands of years. Real place. Real archaeology. Legendary story. 🟡 2. The Cyclops — Sicily Odysseus’ encounter with Polyphemus is one of the most famous episodes in the Odyssey. Ancient traditions connected the Cyclopes with Sicily, particularly the volcanic landscape around Mount Etna. The connection is traditional rather than proven—but the dramatic coastline and volcanic terrain make the legend easy to imagine. 🌋👁️ 🟡 3. Aeolia — The Aeolian Islands Odysseus visits Aeolus, keeper of the winds. The mythical location of Aeolia isn’t certain, but its name has long been associated with the real Aeolian Islands north of Sicily. Today you can visit places like Lipari, Vulcano and Stromboli. And yes—there are still plenty of winds and volcanoes. 🌬️🌋 🟡 4. Circe — Monte Circeo, Italy Circe’s island of Aeaea is another mystery. Ancient and later traditions associated Circe with the Italian coast around Monte Circeo. There’s no proof this was Homer’s exact location—but you can actually visit the dramatic landscape associated with the legend today. 🔴 5. The Mediterranean — Mythical Waters Then come the adventures that are much harder to place on a modern map: 🧜 Sirens 🐍 Scylla 🌊 Charybdis 🌸 Lotus-Eaters ⛵ Storms and wandering islands These aren’t confirmed modern destinations. They’re part of the mythological geography of the story. 🟢 6. Ithaca — Greece Finally, Odysseus reaches his home. Ithaki is a real Greek island. But there’s still debate over whether modern Ithaca is precisely the island Homer intended. And that’s what makes this journey so fascinating. ⸻ 🧭 Three categories. One legendary journey. 🟢 REAL PLACE Archaeological or geographic evidence exists. 🟡 TRADITIONAL IDENTIFICATION A real place has been associated with the story, but the connection isn’t proven. 🔴 MYTHOLOGICAL LOCATION No confirmed modern equivalent exists. So the Odyssey isn’t exactly a historical travel itinerary. It’s something much more interesting: A mythical story built around a Mediterranean world that was very real to the people who imagined it. Thousands of years later, you can still follow pieces of that journey. From the ruins of Troy… through the volcanic islands of Sicily… along the Italian coast… and finally to Ithaca. 🌊 Not just a story. A journey that still inspires travelers today. 📌 Save this map for your next Mediterranean adventure. Which stop on Odysseus’ journey would you visit first? ⛵👇

👁️ You can visit the landscape ancient Greeks associated with the Cyclops. In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus encounters Polyphemus, the one-eyed giant who traps him and his crew inside a cave. The story places Polyphemus among the Cyclopes, a mythical people living in a rugged land far from Odysseus’ home. So where was it? Nobody knows for certain. But one of the strongest traditional associations is Sicily, particularly the dramatic landscape around Mount Etna. 🌋 And it’s easy to understand why. Imagine standing beside a volcanic coastline with enormous rocks rising from the sea, caves carved into the cliffs, and Mount Etna dominating the horizon. To ancient travelers, this landscape must have felt almost otherworldly. 🌋 The Rocks of the Cyclops Off the eastern coast of Sicily, near Aci Trezza, you’ll find the dramatic Cyclops Rocks—huge volcanic formations rising from the sea. Local mythology connects them with the story of Polyphemus. According to the legend, after Odysseus escaped, the enraged Cyclops hurled enormous rocks toward his ship. Today, these formations are part of one of Sicily’s most famous mythological landscapes. Of course, there’s no archaeological evidence that a one-eyed giant actually lived here. But that’s exactly what makes the story fascinating. Ancient mythology turned a real landscape into a legendary one. 📌 Save this for your Sicily bucket list. Would you explore the “land of the Cyclops”? 👁️🌋 ⸻ 🌬️ Aeolia — The Island of the Wind God 🌊 What if a place from Homer’s Odyssey inspired the name of a real island group you can visit today? In the Odyssey, Odysseus reaches Aeolia, the home of Aeolus, keeper of the winds. Aeolus helps Odysseus by giving him the winds in a bag, allowing him to sail toward Ithaca. But the crew opens the bag… …and the winds escape. 🌪️ The journey home goes terribly wrong. 🗺️ So where was Aeolia? The exact location of Homer’s mythical Aeolia isn’t certain. But the name is strongly associated with the Aeolian Islands—a spectacular volcanic archipelago north of Sicily. Today, the islands include: 🌋 Vulcano 🌊 Lipari 🔥 Stromboli 🏝️ Salina 🌿 Filicudi 🌊 Alicudi 🏖️ Panarea And the scenery makes the connection feel almost perfect. Volcanic islands. Sea caves. Steep cliffs. Strong winds. Active volcanoes. And Stromboli, one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, regularly glowing above the Mediterranean. ⚓ Myth vs Reality The important thing is that Homer’s Aeolia and the modern Aeolian Islands shouldn’t be treated as proven to be exactly the same place. The ancient story is mythology. The islands are real. But the connection between them is one of those fascinating places where geography, ancient storytelling and later tradition overlap. And that’s what makes traveling through the Mediterranean so incredible. You can stand on a real island… look across a volcanic sea… and realize that people thousands of years ago were telling stories about gods, monsters, winds and impossible voyages in these same waters. The places are real. The legends are ancient. The mystery remains. 🌊⛵ 📌 Would you visit the Aeolian Islands after reading the Odyssey? #GreekMythology #Odyssey #Cyclops #Polyphemus #Sicily #AeolianIslands #Stromboli #Vulcano #AncientGreece #Mythology #TravelHistory #ItalyTravel

Let me say right away that this is my subjective opinion, and I'm not forcing it on anyone, but whether it's worth spending 2-3 hours of your time on a 5-minute boat ride is up to you. We arrived on the island of Kefalonia by cruise ship, took a taxi right at the port, and went to see this cave after reading rave reviews online. It was a smart decision to take a taxi instead of taking a bus with 50 other people, as we significantly reduced both the travel time and the wait time to enter the cave. Upon arrival, we saw a line of over 200 people waiting to enter the cave, and our taxi driver showed incredible ingenuity and took us straight to the ticket office. 😉 Probably because we'd paid for our roundtrip fare and he didn't want to wait two hours while we stood in line. The cave is certainly beautiful, but small. It only takes 4-5 boats, each accommodating 10 people, so it feels cramped, and the tour itself takes 5-7 minutes. That's all. If you've never seen underground lakes, it's certainly worth a visit, but we've seen plenty in all our travels, and even our hometown has its own underground lakes, and frankly, they're much more beautiful. 😁 Anyway, we went straight to the beach and had a wonderful time.

Another nice place to visit. Cost is around €6 per adult. We were there for about 20 minutes. Lovely and cool under ground looking at the formations. There is a very stew set of steps to climb down and up to access the caves which can be slippery. There is a nice cafe and shop on site with plenty of free parking. On the day we visited there were no queues and we walked straight down to the cave after buying our ticket

The Melissani cave lake was definitely worth a visit. The queues are longest between 11:30-2 when they are at their best. We waited about 45 minutes to visit the cave. The trip last around 10 minutes. The little wooden boats hold about 10 people. The guides like to be paid a tip in Euros.
