This unique mix of cultures and centuries is what makes the city so special. The local cuisine deserves a trip on its own. Alongside fresh seafood and fish, you'll find plenty of dishes with Austrian and Slavic roots. Don't miss the traditional Triestine buffets like Buffet da Pepi, Buffet Siora Rosa, or Buffet da Gildo—they're part of the city's history, not just places to eat. My favorite summer spot is Barcola. There are no sandy beaches here, which I actually love because the water feels incredibly clear and clean. The coastline is framed by green hills and pine trees, making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon swimming, relaxing in the shade, watching sailboats drift by, and grabbing an Aperol Spritz, fried seafood, or a quick snack from one of the many kiosks. This city is overlooked not only by tourists but by the Italians themselves. For most of its history, Trieste belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, serving as its primary seaport and a popular resort. In fact, the very first railway line crossing the Alps was laid down to connect with the Adriatic coast here. Trieste was built with the grand splendor typical of Austrian cities, earning it the nickname given by the Austrians themselves: Vienna by the Sea. Here, grand piazzas open right up to the sea, framed by distant mountains on the horizon, while perfectly preserved ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater lie just around the corner. My curiosity about border cities, combined with my fascination for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, led me on a six-hour train journey across Northern Italy – from Genoa in the northwest to Trieste in the northeast. This is the very city mentioned in Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech, a place steeped in history. Because of its border location and its past as a major port city for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste's architecture stands in stark contrast to typical Italian styles. Having visited Vienna, I can attest that the buildings here truly echo that Austro-Hungarian grandeur, mixed with a hint of Eastern European influence. Even the demographics are different from mainland Italy; you'll see fair-haired individuals here, likely from Eastern Europe, unlike the predominantly dark-haired Italians. There are very, very few Chinese visitors in this city, so locals were quite curious when they saw me. Yet, even in such a place, I incredibly found a Chinese noodle shop (and confirmed it was delicious!). The entire city feels incredibly peaceful and tranquil. The streets are remarkably cleaner and tidier than other major Italian cities. Compared to my experience the next day in Venice, Trieste was an absolute dream. I even found a hotel near the train station that was cheap, comfortable, and clean without even trying too hard. It is located on the northeastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, on the northwest side of the Istrian Peninsula, at the top of the Gulf of Trieste, 113 kilometers west of Venice. Its special geographical position makes it a crossroads of Germanic, Latin, and Slavic cultures, shaping its unique urban landscape. Upon arriving in Trieste, Republic Square immediately impressed me with its grandeur. This sea-facing square is the heart of the city and the largest seaside square in Europe. Surrounding the square are buildings in Art Nouveau and Neoclassical styles, rich with Central European flair, as if narrating the glory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire era. The City Hall’s Art Nouveau sculptures and colonnades, along with its green tower, make one momentarily feel as if they are in Austria. The sea breeze blows unobstructed across the square, bringing the scent of the sea and reminding me that this is an Italian coastal city. People stroll leisurely, chat, and enjoy their time, while street performers add an artistic atmosphere to the square. The most eye-catching feature in the square is the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Water flows gently from the sculpture, sparkling under the sunlight, adding a lively beauty to the square. Standing by the fountain, feeling the cool mist, I imagined the bustling scene during the Austro-Hungarian Empire when this was a major trade port, with merchant ships coming and going, goods piled high, and traders from different countries exchanging and interacting, cultures clashing and blending here. Walking along the seaside promenade, the port comes into view. Various vessels are moored there, from luxurious yachts to simple fishing boats. The site has been adapted to a museum and tastefully altered to remind us of the tragic history of the region. The visit is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and remember. We stayed one night in Trieste at The Modernist Hotel. The hotel is in a historic building, but the rooms are chic. Trieste is not a big city, so the hotel is conveniently located - we walked only 15 minutes from the train station. It is also less than a 15 minute walk to the cruise pier, where we needed to depart. Several grocery stores, restaurants, and shops are located around the immediate area. #italy #Trieste

The most beautiful accident Trieste Trieste in the northwest corner of Italy is an unexpected attraction outside the itinerary. Bordering Slovenia, it is estimated that 99% of tourists to Italy will not go to this forgotten corner. Affected by the cultural traffic of many countries, it has long been a different temperament and style. Because I set the train to Venice at 1 o'clock, the hotel Goopti arrived at 8 o'clock in the morning and arrived at Triste at 9 o'clock. Here are 4 places I’d seriously consider for your next Italy trip: 📍 Cinque Terre Five colourful villages squeezed between dramatic cliffs and the Ligurian Sea. You can easily combine more than one village in a day using the local train, but I’d also leave time to walk around slowly, find the viewpoints and enjoy the smaller streets away from the busiest areas. 📍 Matera One of the most unusual cities in Italy. The historic Sassi district is filled with ancient stone houses, cave dwellings, staircases and viewpoints. Stay until sunset if you can because the whole city turns golden and looks completely different after dark. 📍 Alberobello Famous for its whitewashed trulli with their distinctive cone-shaped roofs. The centre is compact and very easy to explore on foot, so wander beyond the main tourist streets and you’ll find much quieter corners that still feel incredibly traditional. 📍 Trieste Probably the biggest surprise of the four. Grand architecture, huge waterfront squares, cafés, sea views and a fascinating mix of Italian and Central European influences. It feels noticeably different from most other Italian cities. 💡 My tip: Don’t try to squeeze these into the same trip just because they’re all in Italy. They’re spread across completely different parts of the country, so each works better as part of a regional itinerary.
