Legend of Nang Sumontha ... on the Phu Phan mountain range, a national forest reserve The Ba Yao forest is located to the west of Ban Phasuk, Wang Sam Mo District, Udon Thani Province. It is a sacred land that the villagers have talked about since ancient times. There is a mysterious cave that is believed to be the city of the ancient Bang Bod Lab Lae people called Tham Meng or Tham Kiew Hak. On a good day, on a full moon day, sometimes there will be the sound of people talking and laughing clearly in a half-human, half-god language. Some nights, there will be strange rays of light shining from that area and sometimes there will be the sound of gongs, drums, lutes and khaen playing faintly, the sound is cool and pleasant to the ear.
As for the origin of the name of Tham Sumontha, it is mentioned in the Isan Lan Xang literature that the giant Kumphan went out to find food on a mountain range on Phu Phan Mountain and saw Nang Sumontha, who was the only daughter of Phraya Khom, the ruler of the city of Chan Nakhon Ratchasima.
That day, the princess was restless and unhappy in her palace. She wanted to go for a walk in the forest and play, so she accompanied her retinue of concubines and ladies-in-waiting. The queen was sleeping in the forest. When the giant passed by and saw her, he intended to catch her concubine and eat her. However, when he got close and saw her beautiful face, he fell in love with her and changed his mind. He did not eat her concubine, but blew a spell to make her sleep and secretly carried her to hide her in a cave on the top of Phu Pha Hak. When the queen woke up from her sleep and realized that she was surrounded by the giants and their followers, she was very scared. She could only pray and recite spells according to the Brahmanic scriptures, begging the guardian angels and sacred things to make her body hot like a flame and not let the giants come near. The giant, Kumphanthu, could not get close to the queen's body, so she just sat and lay down, guarding the cave with her giant followers, collecting food and fruits to take care of the queen with unwavering loyalty.
