One day trip Aso and Takachiho

Even with limited time, you can visit two places in one day: Mount Aso volcano and go boating at Takachiho. Depart early in the morning from Kumamoto city. I recommend renting a car; it's more convenient. The mountain roads are very easy and safe to drive on, and the scenery along the way is absolutely worth it. Going during autumn, you'll see the mountains in a beautiful golden color.
