The observation deck uses lava for its outer frame and seating, and even when crater viewing is not possible, you can see the rugged plumes of smoke that tell the story of an active volcano. There are also shops and a bus terminal, making it a very convenient and useful facility. Furthermore, this area was once a major sacred site for praying to Mount Aso (a sacred mountain), and even today, Aso-san Seigandenji Okunoin and Aso-sanjo Shrine are located here, attracting many visitors.
