Taipei: Yangmingshan/Beitou Hot Springs, wait until the cherry blossoms are in full bloom
Taipei Citywalk, start a day of admiring cherry blossoms at Yangmingshan, experiencing Beitou Hot Springs, and checking in at Taipei 101. Yangmingshan is Taipei's backyard, and every year from February to March is the season of blooming flowers, with colorful azaleas and early cherry blossoms competing for beauty. By the end of February, the Yaezakura cherry blossoms are blooming competitively, and when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the misty clouds surround the green hills, and soaking in a sulfur hot spring is like a springtime encounter.
🌸 Flower Viewing Spots:
Yangmingshan Flower Clock (Pic 2-7)
Yangmingshan Fountain (Pic 1)
Yangmingshan Second Parking Lot (Pic 9)
🚍 How to get there:
Take the small 8 bus from the Jiantan MRT station, or take the 129/small 9 bus from the Beitou MRT station to reach the above flower viewing spots.
📝 Flower Viewing Tips:
1⃣ The Yangmingshan Flower Clock is planted along the stream with colorful azaleas, which bloom at the end of February together with the early cherry blossoms, creating a layered effect.
2⃣ The Yangmingshan Fountain is tightly surrounded by Yaezakura cherry blossoms, resembling light pink clouds, and the combination with the fountain is very photogenic.
3⃣ The cherry blossoms at the Second Parking Lot bloom earlier, and by the time of visit, it is nearing the end of the flower season.
4⃣ The bus schedule provided by Google Maps for the Yangmingshan area is not accurate; wait for the bus based on the electronic display.
5⃣ Yangmingshan also has other nice attractions such as Xiaoyoukeng and Qixing Mountain (my visit failed due to heavy fog at the mountain top). You can take the 108 bus (circular mountain bus) from the Yangmingshan bus terminal, but pay attention to the schedule as there are not many buses.
♨️ Beitou Hot Springs:
Yangmingshan is an active volcano with abundant geothermal resources. The hot springs in the Beitou area are natural green sulfur springs, which are said to contain trace amounts of radium and have healing effects, one of only two in the world. In addition to hot spring hotels, you can also choose specialized hot spring shops. I chose the 'Emperor Pool Hot Spring Royal Meal Pavilion', which can be reached by the small 8/small 9 bus. The hot spring is located in the sulfur stream of Yangmingshan, surrounded by numerous spring eyes steaming with sulfur vapor. After soaking in the sulfur spring, the skin really becomes more delicate, worth a try.
⭕️ The private bathhouse requires at least two people (500 Taiwan dollars), with a 30-minute limit on holidays and 40 minutes on weekdays; the public pool is not time-limited (250), and the locker requires a 20 coin.
❗️ If you choose the mixed public pool, bring a swimsuit.
‼️ There is a restaurant inside, and if you spend more than 400 on a meal, you can soak in the public pool for free.
🗻 Sulfur Valley:
After soaking in the hot springs, I checked in at Sulfur Valley (Pic 10-11), a 15-minute walk from the Emperor Pool Hot Springs. A large amount of sulfur vapor spews from the ground, accompanied by boiling and erupting spring water, making a hissing sound, a spectacular scene.
🏢 Taipei 101:
After the tour, I checked in at several classic spots of Taipei 101.
1⃣ Takeuchi Izakaya (Pic 12-13), walk south for 10 minutes from Exit 2 of the Xiangshan MRT station to compress the towering skyscraper and old house into one picture, creating a beauty of old and new integration.
2⃣ Xiangshan (Pic 14-16), enter the mountain from the 'Xiangshan Trail' entrance on Google Maps, choose the right path at the first fork, and reach the photography platform in 15 minutes. But it is recommended to continue walking up for 10 minutes to the Six Giant Rocks viewing platform, where the view is more open. The mountain trail is all stone steps with handrails and street lights, making climbing effortless.
I spent my morning bathing in one of the Hot Spring Resorts in Beitou Thermal Valley. After that, I decided to spend my afternoon in Beitou Hot Spring Museum. I really appreciated this museum because they have English explanations on all sections, because I don't read any Mandarin. This museum provides a well-explained bathing history of the previous generations. Admission is free!

When I came to Taiwan's Beitou, I realized that the original hot springs also had their own museum. The building of the Beitou Hot Springs Museum itself is a former public hot spring bath. It was built in 1913. It was the largest public bath in East Asia at that time. It attracted the Japanese Crown Prince and Sun Yat-sen. The museum's architecture uses a Japanese-style wooden structure, but the exterior looks more like an English country house. The calm red brick wall is matched with the black tile and the green shade. It is a good place to relax.
The museum covers an area of about 700 pings. It is backed by the green hills. The winding path is quiet, the flowers and trees are sparse, and the style is novel and unique. In 1997, under the active enthusiasm of enthusiastic people, it was designated as a third-class cultural relics in Taiwan and was converted into the Beitou Hot Spring Museum. Today, it is not only a precious memory of history, but also a deeper reflection of the feelings of residents of Beitou on this land. The entrance to the
hot spring museum is located on the second floor. It is necessary to change shoes and put on the slippers provided by the museum before entering the museum. The central "Tatami Activity Hall" on the second floor is the place where people who have come here after bathing have a meal, rest and cool. The room layout, the Japanese-style floor, and the hot spring smell in the air, the old days, as if they are just before the eyes.
The view of the Beitou Valley and Beitou Park on the second floor corridor is quite attractive. Imagine that people in the past have a good time to enjoy the beauty after a hot spring bath. It is indeed a great enjoyment!
Next down the wooden ladder to the first floor, the most striking is the central hot spring bath. It used to be the largest hot spring bath in East Asia. Today, it still looks a bit grand and magnificent; It is a vaulted wall, full of Roman public baths, gorgeous and spectacular. The
central large bath is limited to male guests, and the small soup pool in the room is specially for female guests. There is also a VIP room. In the exhibition room on the first floor, we introduce the geological structure of the hot springs, the reasons for the formation, the distribution of the world's hot springs, etc., and introduce the famous hot spring scenic spots in Taiwan and the world, so that visitors can experience the ubiquitous charm of the hot springs.
One of the sources of the Beitou Geothermal Valley and Hot Springs Museum
is the hot spring with the highest temperature in the area of the Dagu Mountain Group. The scenery of sulfur and smoke is like a dream, like a fairyland. Therefore, the name of "mineral jade fog"!
The geothermal hot spring water is clear, the temperature is between 90 °C and 100 °C, the water is acidic spring of hydrochloric acid, also known as "green sulphur spring", the hot spring water of the soup and the surrounding hot spring club is this kind of spring. It has different effects on joints, muscles, skin, bronchus and nerves, but remember that you can not wash your body with soap after the bubble is finished!
Beitou Hot Springs Museum, the second floor of the Tudor period in the English countryside!
At first glance, I thought it was the villa residence. It was a well-known hot spring public bath in the Japanese occupation era. Now it is the best place to learn about Beitou history and culture: Beitou Hot Spring Museum!
For the first time, I saw such a museum that introduced the hot springs in detail, from geological overview to how to properly bathe, or quite up!
The central hot spring bath in the museum, once the largest hot spring bath in East Asia, is almost the size of a swimming pool! The bath is surrounded by arched walls and is full of Roman public baths!
The most pleasant place in the museum is the tatami seating area in the middle of the second floor. It smells a touch of grass and enjoys the spring of the garden. The tired body and mind are greatly released!

Taipei Palace Museum Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Palace Museum in Taipei
Located in front of a hill and surrounded by a garden, the Palace Museum stands out with its colourful architecture. It’s a must when you’re in Taipei. I spent an afternoon having looking at paintings and other artworks on display showcasing ancient times and history at every corner. It got a bit crowded after a while, but the museum is so big that you get easily immersed in special effects and interactive features. You can also buy souvenirs from the gift shop there.
Entrance ➡️ There is an entrance fee.
How to go ➡️ I took the MRT(that’s how the metro system is called in Taiwan)to Shilin Station 🚇 and then took bus 🚌 R30. The museum is across from the bus.

The National Museum of Taiwan
How could I have missed this place during my five trips to Taiwan? There's so much to see, with audio guides available, and some exhibits even have Thai language options. The history of the amazing ceramic bowls is captivating. You can walk around at your leisure, and it's conveniently located. The place is beautiful.
It's not difficult to get there from Ximending. You can take the subway and then a bus. After finishing the tour, you can walk to the Shilin Market for some shopping and dinner.
