Canons Ashby – A Hidden Gem in the Northamptonshire Countryside

I had the most peaceful and inspiring visit to Canons Ashby, and it completely exceeded my expectations. Tucked away in the rolling hills of Northamptonshire, this beautiful Elizabethan manor house feels like a secret waiting to be discovered. Unlike some of the grand estates that feel slightly overwhelming, Canons Ashby is warm, welcoming, and full of character. The house itself has been carefully preserved with much of its original charm intact — timber-framed walls, creaky floorboards, and cozy rooms that tell the story of the Dryden family, who lived here for over 400 years. It’s not just about grand furniture or portraits; it’s about the lives lived within these walls. What truly made my day though were the gardens — formal but not too polished, full of colour and life. There are terraces of fragrant herbs, topiary-lined paths, and quiet corners where you can sit and take it all in. The walled garden, with its neat vegetable patches and cottage-style planting, was especially delightful. A short stroll around the grounds revealed stunning views over the surrounding countryside and a chance to visit the peaceful parish church, which dates back to the 13th century and is steeped in history. Best time to visit? Late spring and early summer are perfect when the gardens are bursting into bloom, but it’s a charming retreat all year round. Location: Canons Ashby House, Daventry, Northamptonshire, NN11 3SD Tip: Don’t miss the tea-room — their homemade scones are heavenly, especially when enjoyed outdoors in the garden! #canonsashby #nationaltrust #hiddengemsuk #historichomes #countryescape #northamptonshiredaysout #elizabethanmanor #walledgardenwander #triprecommended #slowtravelengland
