You won't realize how little you know until you visit Anfeng

Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles. Even without reading, a visit to the former residence of Ge Xianglan in Dongtai's Anfeng Ancient Town makes one acutely aware of their own intellectual shallowness! Ge Xianglan (1904–1964), originally named Ge Shaoling, was a renowned modern Chinese painter, especially famous for his horse paintings, earning him the title "Foremost in Jiangnan for Painting Steeds." A native of Dongtai, Jiangsu, he was long active in Shanghai's art scene and was known as one of the "Four Great Masters of the Shanghai School of Painting," alongside Jiang Hanting, Tang Yun, and Zhang Dazhuang. Admission to Ge Xianglan's former residence costs ten yuan. Though modest in size, it was his birthplace and the place of his early life. The residence retains some traditional architectural features, with parts possibly restored or renovated. Due to Ge's significant artistic achievements, the local government has commemorated the site with memorial markers.
