Dunhuang, a city with a great reputation, has transformed from a gem on the ancient Silk Road to a famous tourist destination today. Before visiting, I imagined it might be noisy and chaotic due to the large number of visitors, and where there are many people, disorder often follows. I visited Dunhuang a couple of years ago, went to the Mogao Caves, and saw Dunhuang and Mingsha Mountain. The layout is very artistic, with many books about Dunhuang. It’s a bookstore worth visiting. The cultural products are exquisite but expensive, and many styles cannot be found at the night market. You can visit Dunhuang Bookstore first and then the night market to compare and buy. Near Gate 302 on the second floor of the airport, there is a Dunhuang cultural and creative shop. The products there are from the same brand as the bookstore and priced the same, so you can fill in any gaps. In photo 17, I bought a glowing fridge magnet at the airport cultural shop, which looks really beautiful with three kinds of lighting when turned on! Environment✨ The environment is nice, and of course, the price is also high. The hotel belongs to the Pullman brand, mainly targeting high-end business travelers. It covers 3,000 acres, with a large area and considerable distance between buildings, and there are many travel RVs. Personally, I think it would be a bit inconvenient without a car because it’s not in the city center. Also, during Dunhuang’s peak tourist season, it’s really hard to get a taxi. When walking outdoors, be sure to protect yourself from mosquitoes. The mosquitoes in Dunhuang are the second most aggressive I’ve encountered after my undergraduate fieldwork in Gannan. The big welts and itching are truly unforgettable. Food In ancient Dunhuang, there is a place full of lively atmosphere and mysterious charm—the Shazhou Night Market. The aroma of delicious food fills the air, making your mouth water. The skewers of lamb grilling and sizzling with oil (completely different from the lamb skewers in Xinjiang) emit a strong cumin fragrance. One of my favorites: the sweet and tasty apricot skin drink, which brings a touch of coolness to the hot night. There are also various special snacks, each bite full of Dunhuang’s unique flavor.
