WESTLEY MANNING

The Liu Family Ancestral Hall of Fengjian

The Liu Family Ancestral Hall of Fengjian, originally known as the 'Shadow Hall', was first established in the thirteenth year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1415) when Liu Guancheng, the fifth-generation ancestor of the Liu family, 'initiated the construction of the ancestral hall'. It underwent renovation and expansion during the Tianqi period (1621–1627), including the addition of east and west bell and drum towers and surrounding pavilions. The hall was also extensively repaired during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty and in 2002. The hall faces south with its back to the north, spanning three routes, with a width of five bays and a depth of three sections. The total width is 32 meters, the central route is 19.2 meters wide, and the total depth is 59.6 meters, covering an area of more than 1,900 square meters. It features a hard mountain roof, dragon boat ridge, gable walls with plain tile decorations, drip edges, and green brick walls with sandstone bases, making it a rare Ming Dynasty five-bay ancestral hall in Shunde.
