Feilai Peak Carvings, Hangzhou, Zhejiang

Feilai Peak is a limestone peak about 168 meters high, with more than 300 carvings from the Five Dynasties to the Yuan Dynasty. The earliest carvings are of Amitabha, Guanyin, and Mahasthamaprapta on the rock to the right of the entrance to Qinglin Cave, dating back to 951 AD. Most of the carvings are from the Song Dynasty, but most do not have inscriptions, including the famous Lushena and Maitreya carvings. There are more than 100 Han and Tibetan-style carvings from the Yuan Dynasty, which are relatively well-preserved. These carvings were created under the supervision of Yang Lianzhenjia, the head of Buddhism in Jiangnan, in the early Yuan Dynasty. These carvings are generally large (the largest is over 3 meters), and were created between 1282 and 1292. The Vairocana, Manjusri, and Samantabhadra carvings on the outer wall of Qinglin Cave are the earliest Yuan Dynasty stone carvings in West Lake, Hangzhou. National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
