Two historic buildings declared monuments

The Government published in the Gazette (October 20) announcing that the Antiquities Authority (i.e. the Secretary for Development) has declared the Fat Tong Mun Tin Hau Temple (the Temple) in Sai Kung and the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong in Sheung Wan as statutory monuments under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance. The ancient temple, also known as the "Big Temple", is located on the north bank of Fo Tong Mun in Sai Kung. It is one of the oldest and largest Tin Hau temples in Hong Kong, and is also one of the few Tin Hau temples facing the sea. From the text on a stone carving behind the ancient temple, it can be inferred that the ancient temple is related to the Southern Song Dynasty. The ancient temple preserves many ancient buildings and decorative components, including granite columns, painted incense pavilions, guardrails, eaves, floor tiles, etc. The ancient temple has great historical and social value, reflecting the traditional beliefs and customs of fishermen and other maritime communities, and confirming the important position of Tin Hau faith in Hong Kong. The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong is now known as the Bridges Street Club. It is located on Bridges Street, Sheung Wan. It was built in 1918 and was the first headquarters building of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong until the association moved its headquarters to Waterloo Road, Kowloon in 1966. The building still retains Hong Kong's first indoor heated swimming pool and a wooden wok-shaped running track supported by a cantilever structure. Since the opening of the building, the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong has been providing a wide range of social services there, witnessing the development of social services in Hong Kong.
