Authentic Jiangsu and Zhejiang Cuisine in Sheung Wan

Recently, I visited Jiangsu Ming Yue in Sheung Wan, which specializes in traditional Jiangsu and Zhejiang cuisine. The restaurant offers a comfortable and elegant ambiance, complemented by the exquisite presentation of the dishes, creating an upscale yet cozy dining experience. My friends and I opted for the $498 per person business set menu. The appetizers included three selections: the Double-Colored Zhenjiang Cured Meat was translucent and refreshing with a savory aroma; the Scallion Oil Jellyfish Head was crisp and flavorful with a delightful scallion fragrance; and the Smoked Egg with Caviar and Sea Salt was unique, offering a distinct layering of flavors. The soup course featured Yunnan Mushroom and Conch Chicken Soup, a rare find as it was not greasy at all. The broth was clear and rich, with each ingredient perfectly tender. The main courses were full of surprises. The Mango Salad Tiger Prawn Balls had a sauce with a sweet mango aroma, paired with grapefruit, creating a flavor reminiscent of the popular dessert Yangzhi Ganlu. The tiger prawns were firm and bouncy. The Braised Sea Cucumber with Black Pork Belly was particularly impressive, with the black pork belly being tender and richly flavored. The Pickled Pepper Cod Fillet was the biggest surprise. Despite not being able to handle spicy food, I was ready to skip this dish 😂, but my friend assured me it was only mildly spicy and flavorful. Indeed, it was delicious without being greasy, and the cod was tender and satisfying. Next came the Shanghai Cabbage in Broth and the Signature Soup Dumplings. As a soup dumpling enthusiast, I was very pleased with the thin skin, flavorful filling, and abundant soup inside. Finally, the dessert was Taro Sago Cream. It was slightly too sweet for my taste, but the taro was creamy, and I ended up finishing the whole bowl!
