Exploring Temples and Shrines in Kyoto: Shokoku-ji Temple

Shokoku-ji Temple is the head temple of the Rinzai sect's Shokoku-ji school. Located to the north of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, it was founded in 1392 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Ranked second among the Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto, it has a rich history of producing many learned monks. The main hall, donated by Toyotomi Hideyori, features a ceiling painting of a coiled dragon by Kano Mitsunobu, known as the 'Crying Dragon.' The temple also houses numerous artworks, including pieces by Ito Jakuchu. The popular tourist spots Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji are sub-temples of Shokoku-ji. The temple town in front of Shokoku-ji is also home to Doshisha University, making it famous as a student town.
