The Mazarron Bay is sheltered by the last foothills of the Almenara Mountains, a mining area since Carthaginian times. More than 35 km of beaches, unspoilt bays and rocky sea beds make this the ideal place to relax in the sun, enjoy sailing sports and scuba diving, and sample the local gastronomy. The port, fishing pier and fish market offer visitors the opportunity to learn more about the town's seafaring traditions. A good way to do this is to visit the Roman Salt Factory Museum, which features part of a large industrial complex dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries for the production of salted foods. The defensive tower on the peak of Los Caballos is just a stone’s throw away. The Bolnuevo Erosions, sandstone monuments carved by water and wind, are another sight to behold. The town of Mazarron, three kilometres inland, is home to the Church of San Andrés with its Mudejar caskets, the Monastery of La Purisima and the ruins of Vélez Castle.
