The pit courtyard is the earliest cave dwelling, and its exact origin is unknown. Pinglu County in Shanxi Province currently has the most pit courtyards in the southern Shanxi region, and some of them are still inhabited. According to records, the pit courtyard is a unique dwelling that has existed for over 4,000 years. It originated from the ancient cave dwelling style and is generally buried more than ten meters underground. Experts describe it as an "underground courtyard."
