Seoul Museum of Photography

Seoul Museum of Photography opens today The Seoul Museum of Photography, the first public art museum specializing in photography in Korea, opened today (5.29) in Chang-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul. It has been 10 years since its construction began in 2015. The architectural design was done by Austria's Yardrick Architect Tour and Korea's Ilgugugong Urban Architecture. The exterior is reminiscent of a camera at first glance, but the design was inspired by the way a camera aperture actually opens and closes. Upon entering the space, the first floor is a photobook café, the second and third floors are four exhibition halls, and the fourth floor is a photography library, darkroom, and training room. The opening exhibition will feature a collection exhibition titled 'Gwangchae (光彩): Moments of the Beginning' that highlights five major photographers in Korean art photography. You can see the works of artist Jeong Hae-chang, who pondered his own new and artistic photography, artist Lee Hyeong-rok, who spread realism photography, artist Im Seok-je, who established the aesthetics and ethics of realism photography, artist Jo Hyeon-du, who showed the potential of abstract photography, and artist Park Young-sook, a pioneer of Korean women's photography. You can also get a glimpse of the exhibition 'Storage Story', which contains the process of establishing the Seoul Museum of Photography.
