A traditional but well managed zoo

This is not a fair review, I am biased and love Shanghai Zoo. I visit around 4 times a year. Shanghai zoo is the perfect place to enjoy a weekend morning. Most of the animals are very well looked after. Some of the enclosures are a little old but you can see renovation projects taking place, such as the renovation of the big cat house. The lions perhaps look the unhappiest in the Zoo. However, most animals seem relatively happy and well looked after. There is a huge variety of animals and birds to see. The staff are serious and if present will tell visitors to behave. However, it would be nice to see more staff present to do this. The choice of snacks and foods inside is poor. I recommend eating outside. Metro Line 10 is directly outside so jump on the metro and head into downtown for food. Parking bikes is easy on most days outside the front gate. There are also some good rides, we enjoy taking the wheel to see the park from above. The admission to Shanghai zoo is 40rmb which is excellent value compared to other zoos in the west.
