The National Museum of Natural History in Colombo was established in 1986. The museum is situated in same premises as Colombo National Museum. It is the only natural heritage museum in Sri Lanka which displays plants and animal specimens endemic to the island country. The museum houses a large collection of specimens such as nammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fish, amphibians, as well as plants and geological Rocks. One of the main highlights of the display is a 65 feet (about 20 metres) blue whale specimen which washed up on the shore of Ambalangoda in 1894. It was such an eye-opening experience to see the skeleton of the largest mammal on earth up close.
