From a distance, it looks like a garden on the water, resembling a fairyland at sea. The owner of Tuisi Garden, Ren Lansheng, faced setbacks in his middle age and was impeached. He retired to Tongli Town outside Suzhou City and built this small garden. Later, the court reappointed him, and Ren Lansheng returned to his official duties. Therefore, he named it 'Tuisi,' which means 'to reflect on loyalty when in service and to make amends when retired.' Unlike the complete seclusion of the Canglang Pavilion and the Master of the Nets Garden, Tuisi Garden represents a philosophy of reflection and progress, of making amends and re-entering society. It embodies the wisdom of knowing when to advance and when to retreat. Just as Tuisi Garden is away from the city of Suzhou, it represents a retreat; Ren Lansheng's return to his hometown to build the garden is a retreat; but his re-entry into officialdom is an advance; the unique environment of Tuisi Garden compared to other gardens is also an advance. There is joy in moving forward, and comfort in stepping back!
