Szmaragdowe Lake

Szmaragdowe Lake - an artificial lake located in the Szczecin-Zdroje housing estate, in the area of the "Puszcza Bukowa" Landscape Park. It owes its name to the characteristic color of the water (the result of the content of calcium carbonate, derived from the dissolution of calcite). Due to the high content of calcium carbonate, intensive biological life did not develop in the waters of Lake Emerald. The lack of reeds and rushes on the shores (which are a natural place of shelter and feeding for waterfowl) makes it rare to see representatives of the avifauna on the lake. The forests growing around the lake are of natural origin (they developed without human intervention) and began to emerge after the mining exploitation of the area was discontinued (after 1925). Initially, birches and poplars began to appear on the steep slopes of the former mine, later: black locusts, mountain elms, pines, maples and other species. Currently, the Pomeranian beech forest complex dominates around the lake, with small fragments of light-loving xerothermic oak forest. On the sunny slopes, there are xerothermic vegetation, including, among others: glider, double-leaved clover, orchid orchid. Protected plants can also be found here: common ivy, blackberry, woodruff. The animal world is represented by numerous nesting birds (woodpeckers, nuthatches, ravens, cuckoos, tits, jays, finches) and mammals (badgers, wild boars, martens, foxes, squirrels, roe deer). #poland #polandtravel #szczecin #lake
