Visit Qingtiangang

Taipei Yangmingshan Qingtiangang Grassland (Qingtiangang Trail) is famous for its cattle. The entrance is free, and no ticket is required! Qingtiangang is located in the center of the Datun Volcano Group. It was formed by lava flows from Zhugao Mountain. The terrain is flat and open, and it has been a grazing area for cattle since the late Qing Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period. During the Japanese colonial period, Qingtiangang, Qigushan, Huangzuishan, Shitiling, and Dingshan were designated as the "Dalingtou Pasture," where cattle were fostered. At its peak, about 1,600 cattle were fostered here. The main grass introduced for grazing was carpet grass. With the mechanization of agriculture, the grazing industry declined, and the number of cattle decreased. The grassland vegetation was replaced by silvergrass and false holly, and shrubs and small trees expanded, creating a unique landscape of carpet grassland interspersed with shrubs and trees. The fostered water buffaloes from the past have reproduced in the area. Some of the water buffaloes that were not taken back have naturally proliferated in Qingtiangang, Huangzuishan, and Dingshan-Shitiling, forming three groups of feral water buffaloes. The population fluctuates with the weather and environmental conditions. These feral water buffaloes are wild and defensive, so visitors should not get too close or tease them.
